MDZip
They're probably just taking wohever happens to be in first in the MAC East as their "projection", but it is fun to see our helmet between Oklahoma, tOSU, Texas and Alabama. And East Carolina would be a fun bowl opponent. The Motor City Bowl is projected as Ball State/Wisconsin. That would be fun too. How about we win the MACC so we get another crack at Wisconsin on a neutral field?

But I'm not sure if UW will be bowl eligible or not. If they don't beat Illinois this weekend, I'm not sure if even the closer against Cal Poly will save them.I think we'd all be glad to be playing anywhere. You are crazy! Root for your team/school first and then concern your self with what the rest of the conference does. Seeing as we're 4-4 (2-2) now, we root for 4 wins to close out the season, a MACC win, and a bowl win...nothing less. The success of our own programs trumps overall conference progress. Can you imagine other fans doing what you propose if the roles were reversed (Akron - BSU)? I can't!If we win championships every year, the Big East will come calling and then, the status of the MAC is irrelevent. That should be (and likely is) an extended goal of the University and its Athletics Department. That being said, I'd love to play and beat the University of Michigan in the Motor City Bowl. MDZip
That being said, I'd love to play and beat the University of Michigan in the Motor City Bowl. Now that would be fun, but I think the Wolverines have zero chance of being Bowl eligible this year (it will break a 33 year streak, longest in the country). They are 2-5, have Michigan State this weekend (who just dropped out of the rankings), then Purdue and three ranked teams (Minnesota, Northwestern and OSU). In other years that might have looked doable. I do not think so this year.

They won't invite us if we win the national title in Soccer. They won't invite us for any athletic achievements, no matter how great. The only way Akron gets an invite is if we have something of value to offer them, and the only thing they value is money. So unless Akron suddenly gets a whole lot more popular as a "franchise", we're stuck in the MAC.
K-Roo
I would just like to be 7-5 and in the mix for a Bowl somewhere period..It is possible the Zips may be the only bowl eligible team from the MAC East.Zips (4-4, 2-2) 4 winnable games remaining. Toledo, Buffalo, OU and Temple are all winnable games...Win out and we go to a Bowl (8-4) plus MCC game puts you at (9-4) or (8-5).Temple is (3-5, 2-3) @ Navy, @ Can't State, EMU, AkronBG (3-4, 1-2) has @ NIU, @ Can't State, Buffalo, ToledoBuffalo (3-4, 1-2) has @ Ohio, Miami, Akron, @ BG, Can't StateMiami (2-5, 1-2) has Can't State, @ Buffalo, Ball State, @ Toledo, @ OhioOhio (2-7, 1-2) has Buffalo, BG, Akron, @ MiamiCan't (1-6, 0-3) has @ Miami. @ BG, Temple, NIU, @ BuffaloI may end up having to root for the flushes to win out.. zipseuph
I just look at it like this. Ball State goes 13-0 and possibly goes to a BCS and becomes the next Boise State while we go 7-6 or 8-5 and still get the bowl in detroit or where ever else. if we beat them in the MACC (assuming we get there) then they fall off to a no one bowl and do absolutly nothing to garner the MAC more respect. lets face it we're not going to the Big East anytime soon so the best we can hope for is either for us or someone else in this confrence to make a huge statement. it's obviously not gonna be us this year so why not Ball State? we go bowling and they bring us respect. it's a win win in my eyes

It's a "losing" situation. I want to knock off ball State in the MAC Championship game. You can't tell me that a 13-0 Ball State playing a Sun-Belt also-ran (I don't think the Big 10 will be able to fill their spot, and Ball State won't get into a BCS game) in the Motor City Bowl somehow benefits us more than us knocking off an undefeated ranked opponent on national TV while winning the conference championship. They would get killed by a team like USC or Florida or Oklahoma. Your assumption is they win the BCS game. What if they get beat 49-0? Weren't they blown out by someone like Tulsa last year in a meaningless bowl game? How would that help MAC respect? Let's face it, the MAC has been around since 1946 and it still is a low level D-IA conference. One BCS game is not going to change that. If Marshall didn't change it and Miami under Roethlisberger didn't change it, BSU isn't going to change it.BSU is going to bring US respect? How about if we go out and EARN our own respect by beating the best team in the conference in the MACC? That's how you get respect.

I wish I could top his incredulous exasperation, but I can't. I could go on all day. The idea that it is OK to lose because down the road we will be better off is exactly the type of "building for the future" garbage that I have been complaining about for years. Building what? The future is freaking now and a MAC Championship is the ideal circumcision (see misused words on another thread) the program needs for next year. A championship this year would say, "We know you had your doubts, but we have everything in order. Come watch us play because we are good and your money will not be wasted." The MAC Championship would guarantee a bowl. If we don't win it, we are sitting around waiting for someone to invite us.
ZachTheZip
Screw building for some vague future. Akron needs to win, and win NOW. We already have the "future" being built for us, and you can stare at it all day on webcams. Akron needs to win the East this year. Why should we try focusing on anything else when we have the East and a bowl game within our grasp? It's time to take a step forward, not spin our wheels in the mud outside the Rubber Bowl. Think of it this way. Nobody from Akron 10 years from now will remember losing to Ball St and going to (insert chance in hell named bowl here) or more likely sitting at home. We WILL remember upsetting Ball St, winning the MACC, and rightfully playing in the Motor City Bowl.

If I had my choice, though, I'd love to see us play a Pac-10 school. If some of these conferences don't have enough bowl eligible teams then maybe we fill in for a school against a Pac-10 team or a P-10 team will be in the Motor City Bowl or something. I know its an extreme long shot though. It just seems the MAC and Pac-10 never get together on the gridiron, and for it to be on a neutral field or even in MAC country would be ideal. The only Pac-10 team I recall the Zips playing was Oregon St. in Corvallis back in the Faust days. If I recall, we gave them a decent game too, but this was before this particular OSU got decent again in football.I would figure the main reason you don't see these match-ups is because the MAC teams would rather keep more of the "payout" by playing at BCS schools that are closer to home. After thinking about this a little, I remembered that Toledo opened up at Arizona this season. I recall listening to the game on XM on the drive back from Syracuse. But this is certainly an exception and not the rule.
scottditzen
Good point. It would be so cool to play Pac 10 and other teams that you just don't see around here.Although I don't care to go back to Detroit for a bowl game. Our fan base did represent well since it's so close, but Detroit kind of sucked. Would rather go to Toronto or Mobile or anywhere else.
