Four years ago, my wife (a Miami graduate) and I went to Oxford on November 2, 2004 to watch Miami vs. Toledo. The Redhawks won 23-16 in a season where they went 8-5 losing in the MACC and Independence Bowl to Iowa State (we attended that also). On that night, George Bush, the largest government expander in USA history, beat Kerry.Since then, both the Republican Party and the Redhawks have fallen on hard times. Miami won on election night four years ago and lost last night to a team people would have laughed at four years ago. The question is who has fallen on more hard times, The Republican Party or the Redhawks.I am voting Republican Party as they are both morally and intellectually bankrupt. Miami may be intellectually bankrupt with Montgomery, but their kids are playing hard so they are not morally bankrupt. A new coach would have a lot to work with there. How do all of you vote the day after Election 2008 on this topic.

I would vote the Miami Redhawks.... because try as they might, they don't have 45% of the country rooting for them.
I agree. The Republicans are down, but not out. In two years they will be primed to gain back seats in the house and senate (The out of power party always does). The last time the Dems controlled both houses of congress and the white house was under the Carter administration. Those of you who are old enough to remember will recall that the result of all of that socialism was 10% inflation, 10% unemployment, 20% interest rates, and the hostage crisis in Iran due to a weakened US global military prescence. I pray that none of that mess occurs again. As far as Miami, I hope they keep Montgomery for at least a few more years because he is destroying that once proud program. The Dems were in control of both the House and Senate from 92-94 onder Clinton. That ushered in the Republican victory in the mid terms.

Kangaroo Craig....I'm old enough to remember that...and you're right on the money. I believe that had a lot to do with this election cycle....all of the young people who don't remember that we experienced a completely disasterous period when Jimmy Carter and the Dems tried to run this country. Lines at gas stations....fuel shortages....double digit interest rates on home loans...dramatic increases in consumer prices. Thank God Ronald Reagan was waiting in the wings. Who will be our savior this time? Trying to increase taxes on businesses, and thus forcing them to cut employment and/or raise prices, is something that we already know does not grow an economy. Once the GOP gets back to their roots and returns to a conservative agenda, this country will be back on the right track again.

That's the problem with a consertive agenda ... it takes the country "back". Let's move forward and see what happens.

It's funny, with the exception of double digit interest rates, we had all of those things this year. Each party has a smart wing and a stupid wing. The stupid wing of the GOP has taken over the party. How are the stupid? Well, they believe dinosaurs and humans lived on the Earth together. They have a very narrow minded religious view and world view in general. The believe a tax dodger like "Joe the Plumber" is a good example of the average business person. They are the people who want to drill, drill, drill.....They were probably the same people who were calling for more typewriters in the mid 1980s when PCs were exploding. Sean Hannity is as stupid as a dried up bag of leaves. The GOP needs to get back to a small government/low tax party. It is currently a morally and intellectually bankrupt party. I'm glad I voted for Bob Barr.

I am voting Republican Party as they are both morally and intellectually bankrupt.
Calling the republicans "morally bankrupt" now that's a stretch. Ya know, the democrats are the party that prides itself on their morals. Whether it's affairs in office, the genocide of 47 million babies, and/or the acceptance of marriage between two same sex people. Those are real morals i guess.

GP1...maybe you weren't around at the time. The government was about to issue "tickets" that only allowed us to buy a certain amount of gas, because people were lined up down the streets at gas stations. That's how bad it was. Also, by 1970s standards, gas prices were far higher back then. And as you can see, our gas price spike this time only lasted a short period of time. And anyway, gas prices are determined by the stock market, and not the president. I don't like to talk about politics on a sports website, but I think it's important for people to understand that when you increase taxes on businesses...only two things can happen...and they are both bad. Increased unemployment....or increased prices. If anyone thinks that businesses just simply "absorb" those increased costs, you've been misled.

I used to think I was a reagan conservative, but i have since lost most of my naivety and realized that "conservative" does not mean smaller government and lower taxes. Those are things that republicans tell you to bring you under their tent. Smaller government, lower taxes, more liberties, and less intrusion are basic precepts of Libertarians. The republican party may rebound some, but depends on two things1) If Obama and the democrat congress deliver on their promises to tax, spend, and socialize government even more2) If the next wave of republicans actually do a better job of pretending to harbor libertarian concepts like the 1994 republican wave did in congress (they nearly passed a balanced budget amendment... wow, that would have been the real deal).Personally, I don't think those two things will happen. I suspect Obama will move to the center when in office like Clinton did in order to get re-elected... and I don't think republicans will don the stripes of small govt and instead will continue to pander to the hand-out hungry masses. So, in conclusion, I expect a Miami rebound is more likely
