1000 Point Club

Last year, three Zips joined the 1000-point club. I think we'd probably all agree that two future members of that club are seeing substantial minutes this year too: Humpty and Brett. But with all the comments/implications about Nate Linhart not being an offensive threat or contributor that I see on this board (we tend to concentrate on his defense), it caught me off guard when I realized that he may actually join that club this year!He finished last year with a total of 653 points, and he has 116 so far this year to put him at 769. That leaves 231 points remaining to get to 1000. He's scoring at an 11.6 ppg clip and Akron has at least 22 games left (hopefully 26+).If he averages 11 ppg here on out, he finishes the regular season with exactly 1000.Be honest, did anyone realize Nate was on pace to reach this? Can he keep up that pace? He's also coming up on 500 rebounds.

As much as Nate has struck me as a player to be taken for granted, I'm rooting for him to hit that 1,000. He's a skinny, geeky kid but man does he work hard out there. We all know that the end of his UA career is the end of his career. Here's hoping that he eeks out every drop of competition and potential he has in the rest of the season.Go Nate! Go Zips!SeeTeeZipper

I've always been a fan of Nate, I think everyone is. I remember the first game I saw him play, he was a Freshman. He worked hard the whole game and at one point nailed a 3, I turned to my Wife and said how much I loved his approach. I'm not a huge BB fan, but IMO, he really is one of Akron's greats. Where is he at right now in regards to those milestones? Hopefully UA and the Media don't overlook this fact and give him the recognition he's due.

Nate can do it all. He's closing in on all four of the major statistical milestones of 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, and 200 steals. Nobody at UA has ever reached all four before, and he's on pace to hit them all before the regular season is over.
that's really an impressive feat. it's hard enough to reach 1 or 2, but to reach all 4? wow! makes me look forward to seeing him play here in a couple weeks.

You'll really enjoy watching Nate play if you have a bit of a sense of humor. He is the textbook definition of "Blue Collar Player." He's not pretty to watch. At all. In fact, it is usually quite ugly. His movement is often quite awkward. But he is very skilled, always gives 100% and by the end of the evening he usually has a decent, if not spectacular stat line.

Nate is the master of the "Circus Shot". He makes at least one outragous basket per game. Usually a 35 ft running 3pt shot or some kind of underhand reverse hoop-d-doo reverse layup with three guys guarding him. And lots of floor burns and charging calls against who ever he is guarding. I love the guy. ;)

sounds like our big guys are going to have their hands full. should be quite the matchup down low.

At the current rate, it appears as if Linhart may fall just short of hitting all four -- 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, and 200 steals. He's averaging fewer minutes this year because the Zips have a deeper bench. On a defensive-minded, low-scoring team with a 10-player rotation, it's unrealistic to expect anyone to amass big numbers. Sure, it would be nice to see Linhart hit some milestone numbers for the record books. But those of us who've watched him play over the years will never measure Linhart's performance by his numbers. He's just a unique team player who plays with intensity and selflessness in all aspects of the game. He quietly, almost invisibly goes about his business, with the occasional spectacular shot, block or steal just when the team needs it most. He led the team with 11 rebounds last night against Ball State, and I didn't realize he had so many until I saw the stats. I'm already thinking how much he'll be missed next year.

Linhart through and including the Ball State Game (122 games):Points = 891Rebounds = 552Steals = 165Assists = 161Blocks = 46There are 8 guaranteed games left so even if the Zips end up with 10+ games, he won't make 200 steals or assists (he'd have to average about 4 per game) and only has an outside shot at 1000 points, but as has been said, you don't appreciate him for just numbers. I'd like to see how many defensive stops he put on or how many times his man was held below his scoring average because a lot of times over the years Nate drew their best offensive player. We will miss him more than can be shown on a stat sheet but how can you not be excited for the end of this year (plus it looks like bring back a pretty good team for next year). Look at the losses this year, the only "bad" loss is EKU, and this team definitely has a very good shot at 20 wins as well as as good of a chance as anyone to win the MAC tournament. No way do you fear meeting Buffalo in the tournament like in other years where there was always a team you really didn't want to face.

Here's the thing I've been wondering about lately. I know it is way to early to be thinking about this in the middle of a 7 game winning streak and with the MAC Tourney approaching and all that, but whatever. Who takes Nate's spot in the lineup next year? The two choices as I see it are Conyers and Brett McKnight as they both play the same SF position as Nate. Conyers is probably the better defender while Brett is clearly better on offense. Do you start Brett who is getting more minutes this year anyways and has improved his defense and decision making as the season has gone on, or do you start Conyers for his defensive abilities and let Brett continue to be the sixth man sparkplug off of the bench? Personally, I'm all for starting Jimmy and keeping Brett in the sixth man role where I think he is the most dangerous for us. Either way, we are probably going to miss a certain degree of what Nate gives us just from his versatility. A guy like Nate who can defend almost any position on the floor, hit some jumpshots and put the ball on the floor and take it to the rim is a guy who isn't that easily replaced.

even so, that's still quite a career. i'm impressed just reading about him, and can't wait to see him here next weekend.

Linhart through and including the BGSU debacle (127 games):Points = 941Rebounds = 573Steals = 173Assists = 169Turnovers = 160 (spiking lately)Blocks = 50Floor Burns = 127+Still a possibility, but likely would need either to miss the bye in (hopefully not) or win the MAC tournament for the extra game(s).

Linhart through and including tonights win over Toledo (130 games):Points = 981Rebounds = 596Steals = 183Assists = 172Turnovers = 169Blocks = 52Floor Burns = 130+
assaulted on court by thugs = 1
Here's the dream scenario. Nate scores 18 points over the next two games (right at his average) and then his first point of the MAC Championship game puts him in the 1000 point club. Of course the Zips win the game because you can't destroy that kind of a scenario. And while I'm wishing, I'd like a pony. :)
