timmyboy
Feel Free to leave comments on what defensive scheme you would like to see us run next year. Me personally would push for the 4-3 with Lemon,Sewell at DE and Bain and Henderson at DT, we have depth on the DL so we should move to a scheme that would allow us to rotate guys in and out to use the depth. I also think that our LB will be decent but we must get more pressure on the QB.
ZachTheZip
We can use a 3-4. We can even do a 4-3. The 3-3-5 is supposed to stop "big plays", which is essentially a prevent defense.
skip-zip
I said undecided. I want to leave that up to the coaches to decide what works best. As I've said all along, I just want better defensive players on the field who can make tackles.
liljc
I am utterly amazed at the amount of time this tired subject keeps getting. Let me guess, someone had already started a "JD is gone after this year" thread?

RACER
i don't like the 3-3-5 because we have to many small players on the field.you have 200 db-lb trying to shed a 300lb lineman.especially since they do not call holding.our guys get wore down, and beat up by the end of the game.i would like to see either a 3-4,or 4-3 since it gets some bigger guys on the field.we look like a high school defense out there with the size of some of our guys. johnnyzip84
I voted to deep 6 the 3-3-5, because I think anyone with MH should be playing in a 4-

g-mann17
Akron Abandons 3-3-5Anyone see this?!Is it totally offical?Rasor is pretty good about having the inside scoop on things. He would have at least had to have heard something first hand before he posted it that way. If he just heard chatter he would have been specific in saying "rumored". MDZip
I think a lot of us felt that a 4-3 would have been good since it seems we have a plethora of pretty good lineman but if a few (Sewell, Lemon) could be converted to a more natural linebacker position, that's even better. With the depth in the lne and relative weakness at linebacker, this could work out really well.

Inexperience I would agree with. But I think we have quite a bit of young talent there.I think in the 3-4 they should leave Sewell at DE. He has bulked up quite a bit since he got here and probably isn't fast enough to be an OLB.

Quickzips
I'm by no means a fan of the 3-4. I still think the 4-3 is the better scheme for us. But thank god the 3-3-5 looks like it is getting the can. I don't think I could have watched another year of that scheme.
Dr Z
I'm with you QZ. I'm still waiting to see something official before I order my tickets though.I think we will have some growing pains with the 3-4, but at least it is a proven defense. My quick observation with the 3-4 is that it takes the majority of OLBs 3 to 4 years to learn the scheme,by that time in college, they are graduating. Blue & Gold
With the depth we have on the DL why wouldn't we just employ the good ol' smash-mouth 4-3? I guess that both Baltimore and Pittsburgh have been successful employing the 3-4, but both those teams have enjoyed the services of an all-world linebacker; Ray Lewis with Baltimore and James Harrison with Pittsburgh (I'm drawing a blank on the name of the Pittsburgh all-world LB that Harrison replaced.) I can't help but think that may be a component to running a dominant 3-4. The odds of getting a LB like that are slim-to-none. So I think we should just run the 4-3. Zipmeister
I think with all the good linemen we have we should consider the 6 - 2 - 3. Of course the 6-2-3 is not as effective as the 7 - 3 - 4, but several of the MAC referees can count.

So I think we should just run the 4-3.Misconception about Baltimore running the 3-4. They did a few years back during the middle of the Brian Billick era. But they ran out of a 4 man front over the last few years with Ryan as coordinator. They will go to a 3 man front from time to time, but their base defense employs the 4 man front. Pittsburgh runs out of a 3-4 and has for a number of years. Cleveland, the Jets, New England, Dallas and San Diego are among the other teams that run the 3-4 at the pro level. I'm with others on here in not understanding why we aren't running a 4 man front. We've got the bodies to do it, and I think right now it puts our most effective players in the best position possible to make plays with guys like Bain, Henderson, Sewell, etc. Also, most of the kids coming out of high school just don't have much if any experience running it. That was a lot of the problem with the 335. It is just such a radically different scheme and you often don't have the time to be patient and let kids learn how to play out of it. RACER
i hope the 3-3-5 is gone.you need alott of great athletes to run that defense.i just don't think we can recruit alott of 200-215lb guys that really run.i think teams eventually wore our undersized defense down. we were also never able to pressure on the qb even when we blitzed.i don't know if another defense will work, but how much worse can it be than last year. johnnyzip84
Va Tech was one of the last college teams to run the "wide tackle six". Maryland was another I believe. Maybe it's time for a re-birth, he said tongue in cheek
