Mid-Major Top-25 Poll

And, ranked just one spot behind Morgan State. Morgan Who? Oh, I know we play them in Sept., but how are they ranked ahead of the :champs: in ANY sport? As I said, :rolleyes:http://www.collegeinsider.com/mmpoll/?DB_OEM_ID=10800
I may be a bit biased but i really think we should be in the top 5, if not even at the #2 spot. Some of those teams are not very good, and we are a lot better than that record indicates.and why aren't there any A10 or C-USA Schools on there, aren't they considered mid-major? I mean I would never consider schools like Fordham, Duquesne, Richmond, and Charlotte to be "major" schools hahaif we played the way we did during the second part of the season we'd wipe the floor with most teams in A10 and CUSA, except of course Memphis...

FWIW, I'm pretty sure memphis will fall steadily the next few years without Coach Cal. They'll probably still be the best the Conference DOA has to offer, but gone are the days of deep tournament runs.

I assume this poll is an "end of the season" ranking, without considering players leaving and players coming aboard. Regardless, #25 seems WAY too low for UA. We'd crush Morgan St. at the JAR or a neutral court and beat them handily in Baltimore. I guess it's time for a little "cross-sports" payback come September 12 :lol: I'll REALLY be curious to see the 2009-2010 PRE-season poll.

i'm sure we'll be under "others receiving votes" for the Overall Top 25. I know a few year back we were, and last years team made it to the national tournament, so I don't see why not. As long as we get votes, we'll be able to move up and potentially get a national ranking, we just need a STRONG start and play some respectable teams, maybe Sh*tsburgh and Dayton again???. NO losses to Eastern Kentucky, Rhode Island, and VCU next year...PLEASE!!!!

Actually, it's pretty cool that Akron is the only team that moved into the top 25 in the final poll from previously NR (not ranked). I suspect that many of the votes were made on team records, with many of the voters not being familiar enough with all the teams to know how they'd fare against each other. For example, the only two 6-loss teams are both in the top 4 with the Zips having the most losses (13).

Are you saying VCU is not a respectable team? A little respect would be nice. Not sure how you can complain about people not respecting Akron when you disrespect similar non-BCS with as much or more basketball success than Akron does. I know there are many level-headed Akron fans who are great, and I'm sure this one fan is probably young, still attending the school and thinks Akron is all-world. Don't disrespect. Rhode Island, VCU and even EKU are all good programs with basketball history. They are certainly not bad losses. Rhode Island took Duke to the wire at Cameron Indoor and killed you guys by 29 points. VCU swept the bracketbuster series with Akron, lost in the first round to UCLA by one point with a shot to win it at the buzzer and has a guy going in the first round of the draft this year in Eric Maynor. The blatant homerism doesn't do justice to the many great fans of the Zips. To say you guys should be 1 or 2 on this list is a joke. Akron has a bright future but it will be that much brighter if you accept it with class.

How's about no losses to a MAC team, ever again. We should be beyond losing to teams in a league that was 21st in the RPI. No losses to teams like NIU ever or to average-at-best teams such as Buffalo/BG at home. VCU was a good team, and I wish more of our schedule resembled them. Valparaiso was the only truly horrible loss outside of the MAC.

Good point. The basketball coaches who comprise the voting panel in this poll probably don't know much about the other mid-majors.

Keep in mind, some of these polls exist just because people want to see them. I'm sure a great deal of extensive research did not go into some of this. Maybe record, OOC SOS, and conference SOS. So, what can we really expect? We need to keep in mind that the last couple of weeks of our season also included losses to a horrible Valparaiso team, an equally horrible Northern Illinois team, lost to BG at home, lost to a Can't State team who played 99% of the game without one of their top players, and needed OT and a couple of miralces to beat the worst team in the MAC (Toledo).I think that many times we as fans tend to evaluate our chances against other teams based on how we performed in our best games. During my student days, the narrow 1986 tournament loss to #2 Michigan was a game that gave me a feeling like we can beat anyone. We've had plenty of similar games since that time. This year, even the first 30 minutes of the Gonzaga game could be pulled out as an example. So, all 25 teams on that mid-major list can make a case for beating everyone else on the list if they look at those teams, and imagine themselves playing some of their better games. It's fun to think like that, but probably not very realistic.

and why aren't there any A10 Schools on there, aren't they considered mid-major?
The A-10 sends multiple teams to the NCAA tournament consistently every year. They sent 3 teams last year. Four different A10 teams were ranked or received votes last season. Mid-major? I don't think so...but its close...

This explains it extremely well.Look at the A-10's budget. They are by no means a "mid-major" conference.

Interesting perspective. But I think a better indicator of a conference's power is how many teams it sends consistently to the big dance every year. If you consistently send multiple teams to the big dance, its hard to classify that as mid-major. But again, that's my perspective. There are many ways to look at it. But all in all, I think classifying any school into major and mid-major categories is ridiculous. Its a term invented by the bigger schools to separate themselves from the so-called "mid major" schools. Its an unnecessary distinction.

Thanks Charlotte. But you aren't suggesting there's no correlation between money spent and the success of a basketball (or any other athletic) program, are you? I suspect they do teach statistics and probablility at UNCC.BTW -- I was the guy who when UNCC played at the Rainbow Classic three years ago, shouted "Put in Cornbread, coach. We want Cornbread!" Remember me? B)
