ZachTheZip Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 No offense to the donors that made our stadium happen, but you have to admit that "Summa Field at Infocision Stadium" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. When they purchased the naming rights, they did so for publicity reasons. As long as the media refers to the stadium by it's proper name, the publicity will continue to be there. That being said, I have noticed a small but growing amount of support to give the stadium a nickname. Lee Jackson Field is called "The Jack", and Rhoades Arena is called "The JAR". They're shortened versions of the official name. Unfortunately that doesn't work too well in this case. The nickname that's gained the most support is "The Pouch". At first I thought that those who were advocating it were doing so to mock the stadium's name or out of contempt for UA for some reason. Now I understand that we need something catchy to use when talking to the fabled "Joe Akron" about our stadium. Something to instill pride in the program that relates to our mascot. Something to offset the inevitable mocking of the official name by non-Akron fans. The Pouch works. It evokes a feeling of being closed in, which is something the architects are going for to make the place more intimidating. Kangaroos have pouches. All the other major stadiums around here have somewhat catchy nicknames, like the Horseshoe, The Big House, The Jake, The Q, etc. We should follow suit. What do you think? I think it sure helps keep a conversation moving when talking you your uncle in Missouri when you can say The Pouch instead of something like "Akron's new stadium" or "Infosumma" or something else because you're struggling to avoid using such a cumbersome name constantly, while also trying not to be too generic by constantly using "the stadium". tbozeglav Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 short answer: nolong answer: noooooooooooooooooseriously tho, I really dont want out beautiful new stadium being nicknamed "The Pouch". Im sorry, but something about that name just screams.... weird things. The nicknames for the other facilities ("The Jack, the JAR, etc) stem from their official names. Nicknaming a stadium after something not even remotely close to the actual name of the stadium gets really iffy. I know there are exceptions, but for now, let's stick with The Info. Quote
Big Zip Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Terrible nickname...I see nothing wrong with calling it "The Info" -- it rolls off the tongue. The Pouch is a fine name of the student section in the stadium. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted May 30, 2009 Author Report Posted May 30, 2009 The Pouch is a fine name of the student section in the stadium.Since when did this happen? Whatever happened to the Roo Zoo? Quote
Blue & Gold Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 I think "The Info" has already evolved unofficially into Infocision Stadium's nickname. Anything forced upon us now would feel contrived. The Info is a great name. And as far as the student section goes, I really like the Roo Zoo. The Pouch, not so much. But we were calling UA "The Zoo" back when I was in high school - I graduated in '91. Quote
GP1 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Yankee Stadium was called "The house that Ruth built".Ours could be called, "The house that scamming little old ladies out of $25 at a time in the name of religion built." Quote
Dave in Green Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 The best nicknames usually evolve from many suggestions, so discussions like this one are good. But unless someone comes up with something really simple and clever that rings everyone's bell, it will be hard to stop the natural inclination for people to simply abbreviate full names, and Info is just a natural abbreviation for the new stadium.Likewise, Roo is a logical and accepted abbreviation for kangaroo, and Roo Zoo is a clever and natural extension of that.I'm not sure how "The House That Roo Built" would play. ndzeigler Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 "The Pouch" ??? are you serious? I mean, I realize Zippy is a female kangaroo, but why would we nickname our stadium after a flap of skin which according to wikipedia: "covers the nipples to protect the joey as it continues to develop." ?I agree, that The Info isn't the greatest either, but its the best natural abbreviation. If you want to develop a nickname other than that, your best bet is to consider things that are unique about the stadium or akron and go from there. I mean, The Polymer Palace may not be the most intimidating, but start thinking along those lines...what does akron/the stadium have that is only around here. Quote
Big Zip Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 The Pouch as student section wasn't a statement of fact it was a suggestion if you wanted The Pouch you could use it for the student section. In fact I think the student section at the JAR was once named The Pouch. By the way -- never before have I seen a survey be so summarily shot down! Wow! Quote
GP1 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Maybe.... "The Executation Chamber on Exchange"....let's just hope we are not the ones being executed weekly.Or..... "The Backyard on Brown"Or.....SUFO Quote
g-mann17 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 The Info is perfectly fine. But can we talk about the Roo Zoo for a moment. Cute, Catchy, Gay? Seriously, a group of Kangaroos are typically referred to as a Mob. Quote

Seriously, a group of Kangaroos are typically referred to as a Mob.That is true and The Mob would sound way better than Pouch, Roo Zoo, etc. I say we go with it. Quote
Dave in Green Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 The Mob? The Mafia is taking over UA? That might require more explanation than The Pouch. The Mob would be more fitting for our neighbors a few miles to the northeast. Quote
zippyrifle32 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 someone else out here (forgive me because i forget) suggested the 411, a word play off "the info". Quote
Zipsrifle Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 How about : "The Call Center"? or"Mumbai" ?Or we could go with the Roo theme and call it"The Outback"or"The Opera House" personally I like"Indecision Stadium"Or, for short we could just call it : "ICS" Quote
ksu sucks Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 "The Outback"Call me corny, but I kinda like that. If the Outback steakhouse blimp is in any way affiliated with Goodyear then that just adds to it. Ya know, the Athletic department doesn't tap into the whole Australian outback theme nearly enough. Ya know, the Athletic department doesn't tap into the whole Australian outback theme nearly enough. I told my brother (who occasionally talks to some guys who own a few Outback restaurants) a few years ago that Outback should have sponsored the stadium. That would have been perfect because of our Kangaroo mascot and stuff. He told me the problem was that they sponsored a bowl game and don't want to be too heavily associated with too many teams. Zipmeister Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 I think the ideal nickname should sound dangerous. Death Valley is great, but taken. How about "the Crematorium" (cause visiting teams are going to get burned)? Plus we might get the National Funeral Directors Association to sponsor some portion of the facility. Quote
ZippyRulz Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 "The Inflow" (due to increased attendance and revenue) Quote
Zipmeister Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 I also like the "Wood Shed," but the "Brick House" is a better fit. Quote
