UA in the news

Recommended Posts

Oh, how cute. I am so not impressed by all the photo shoots and talking heads. I was once happy that JT came to UA, but now I see it is another smoke and mirrors act by the stuffy conservative UA administration. USed car salesmen are they all. Untill I see substance over form at UA regarding the hiring of JT and the building and fund raising for a new arena, I am totally out of the picture as a supporter...so long Akron U. You haven't evolved in the past 50 years. Please stop selling people a pig-in-a-poke.

Oooogy poogy pue you little akron u,. arne't you the cutist little thing that never arrive outside of akorn ohio? Your cheerleaders and phony "student leaders" look like the "wet behind the ears" morons they are. I guess this is why most people flip you the bird as they drive by your commuter campus while your pigtailed white cheerleaders romp and stomp as though they are the best high school in Akron. Your president is a great guy, but as far as the rest of your go...NO ONE TAKES AKRON U SERIOUSLY! IT IS THE TRUTH...YOU KNOW IT BUT YOU WILL ATTACK THE MESSENGER BEFORE YOU ADMIT THE TRUTH.

Is raising the funds needed for a new arena in one year a realistic goal?

pat: could you be more specific on the changes you want to have the University taken "seriously"? I know you arent a fan of the administration as whole, as well as the student leaders, etc...but that is obviously because they aren't doing something that you want them to do. Curious what it is. From what I have heard, the University has changed drastically over the past 15 years, at least the look of it.

sidenote: Saw that Tressel was in Belmont County today talking to kids about the importance of college. May not mean anything to you guys, but coming from Belmont County, many are not informed of the importance of college from their parents. Guys go to the mine, girls go to community college and end up working some desk job.

Now, who can argue with that?

Some interesting data about JT in that article. For example, the fact that he has about 200 people reporting to him, and that the vice president of strategic engagement position is akin to a vice president for student affairs, but more wide-ranging. Sounds as if it's working for him and for UA.

How many people report to you has nothing to do with results. I want JT and other administrators to do what they said they would do not just what I want them to do. These photo opps and special TV news shows make the university look like phony window dressing and that has been going on for far too long. I'll be happy to be proven wrong. In the mean time, I refuse to be a blind follower. Fund raising for an arena did not start with JT and a year of fund raising by JT along with previous years of fund raising by those other than JT don't have to produce complete results but we should be seeing some progress and light at the end of the tunnel. Instead, we see a continued drop in enrollment and a deficit of insurmountable proportion. And don't blame that drop in enrollment on a so-called "higher admission standard". Not even UA is using that as an excuse...yet.

Tressel was brought in to counter the anti-athletics, anti-progress contingent within the university's administration that wants to see us turn back the clock to the 1970s. That's a battle that's tougher than any football game he's coached.

I don't disagree with your assessment of why he was brought in. That said, I think it is unfortunate that any institution, especially a public university has to place people on its payroll in order to counteract other employees on the same payroll. Perhaps I'm being obtuse, but I seem to recall the day when a person was removed (fired) from an organization when it is learned that his/her behavior is counter to the organization's mission. I think they call that sabatage.

Now that you have mentioned it, I can see specific examples of what you are illustrating with a number of administrators who will remain nameless at this time. They pepper the campus like a plague and perhaps their being coddled by Buchtel Hall is a big reason why UA cannot shed its provincial image.

You obviously never watched a game where he tried to coach against the SEC.

UA gets an AA- credit rating from Fitch

Something interesting is this quote:

Following the opening of a new residence hall in fall 2012, which was funded with UA's series 2011 bonds, the university's forward capital needs remain modest with no new direct debt plans at this time.

Emphasis mine. No plans to sell bonds to pay for an new arena. Now, that could certainly change at any point, but as of today they aren't secretly putting things togetherto build an arena or any other major construction project.

It's time to grow a set Pat and name names.

My huevos are just fine, thanks. Not mentioning names is about prudence and not fear. Doing so can backfire on UA's long range efforts. Besides, if you have any knowledge of UA, I'm sure you can identify these individuals on your own and perhaps better than I can.

The $40 million University Edge will offer 578 beds and individual bathrooms in two- , three- and four-bedroom apartments with major appliances, granite countertops and leather living room furniture.

The complex will include tanning beds, free Internet and cable and a “resort-style” swimming pool. Retail stores — Penn Station and Chipotle have signed contracts — will occupy the ground floor.

Chipotle. It's about time.

I love that all this construction has been happening since I've been a student at UA. Since I've been on campus I've seen the Football stadium, Spicer, the new Biology Department, South Hall, the Engineering Research Building and all these community changes making the university and Akron look much nicer. It seems to be an exciting time for UA and the City of Akron.

Two troubling thing are "enrollment...down 4 percent" and the ridiculous pricing of these housing options. Campus dorms are ridiculously expensive to begin with, and quite honestly these apartments are not much more affordable for college students. They say 400ish-600 which means most will be priced in the 600 range. But I guess in today's college world it's something that I'll just have to accept for the time being.

Hopefully with the increased beauty of this campus, students will be inticed to going to campus events and actually living in Akron.

I agree and I think University Edge is an exciting project. Perhaps it will serve as healthy competition that will encourage UA to come down in its housing rates.
