Here it is, two hours after the first home football game versus the Big Ten, and according to "Online Users" I'm the only one on the ZNO.Can anyone guess why?

They play in the Football Championship Series. Or is their football league called the "Gateway Conference"? In any case, its a league for schools that really don't care about football. Did Proenza waste $65M for a stadium when this school can't draw 20,000 for a Big Ten opponent?

1. It is the Missouri Valley Conference.2. We DO Care about football. I'd take Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois over almost any team in the MAC.3. Top to bottom the MAC is a better conference, but not by much according to the Sagarins...

Akron wants to move up to the Big East. That has been in the works for a long time. The stadium was the first step. Building a new basketball arena downtown will be the next.
I would say that somewhere between the Missouri Valley and the Big East lies reality. Akron has only been seriously trying to compete in the MAC for a few years -- I'd say since the arrival of Mike Thomas as AD about 2000-2001. Capital funds have been expended/endebted to upgrade the campus and football stadium to the top of our league. But in terms of overall resource expenditure for athletics ('A' funds), the UA is just a little above the middle of MAC schools. People can and will dream, but the reality of the situation is that Akron is just a middle of the MAC athletic program. For now pressure and patience must go hand-in-hand. I expect in another five years, or definitely ten, we will be on top. Then let the swagger begin. :D Go Zips!

Have you seen the estimates on the needed maintenance and refurb to the Rubber Bowl? Not to mention the sponsorships?

I happen to agree with your qualification. The new place was needed just to keep the program running in place. But this reality in itself disproves the concept that it was built "for bigger things than the MAC". It was built to help Akron excel in the MAC. Nothing more. Nothing less. But to acccomplish that, it requires a football version of the full-court press. I'm not sure (never have been) that the people on the ground are capable of pulling off what it takes to fill the stadium on a consistent basis. That's why our new man, Wisty has to crack the whip. I'd love to be a fly on his wall this week! :D

I don't have to guess, I'll tell you exactly why I was not on. I cooked for a tailgate party Friday night, got up early Saturday morning and started heating up what I prepared the night before, drove down to the stadium at 10:30 am, tailgated for 3+ hours before the game, sat in the scorching sun watching the game for 3+ hours, tailgated after the game and discussed the loss in the parking lot with other fans, and then drove home. After a full day of pouring my heart into the Zips and watching the poor display on the field I really didn't feel like getting on ZN. I was pretty spent.

Excellent point on why the new stadium was built. The RB was a falling down mess in danger of being condemned. The Big Phone Booth is as much necessity as it is a desire. My biggest problem with the "builders" is they would rather be miserable building towards something than enjoying what they have. A 2-10 season is OK as long as it was better than the previous 1-11 season. In four years, they get to 5-7 and they really think they have something going until they go 4-8 the next season and wonder "if the program is going in the right direction". Then they fire the coach because they think the program is not building fast enough. The new coach brings in his system and loses ground and the cycle continues. We should really enjoy what we have now and stop worrying about some disastrous move to the Big East or something like that. With the exception of soccer, we would be destroyed in the BE. Let's get good with what we have.

Minus the fact that the quote you use "for bigger things than the MAC" comes directly from the university president, the fact remains that many teams play in far worse stadiums than we did. They could have went the route of doing minor structural repairs to the Rubber Bowl for ages. They could have built a MAC stadium (any MAC stadium) for half of what the built the Info. Yes everyone here wants to excel in the MAC. But we also don't want to be stuck in the MAC. At what point some of you decided to seperate the two is beyond me. Some of you lack vision.

The next Cincinnati Bearcats. I like your thinking. With enrollment growing every year, several sports titling in the MAC, with continued growth why not build toward that?
