ZachTheZip
Ianello finalizes staffThe University of Akron has retained Vince Okruch as an assistant football coach and added former Cleveland Browns receiver Frisman Jackson to complete new Head Coach Rob Ianello’s staff.Glad to see Coach Okruch staying on. He did a great job with the linebackers from what I saw, and now he has the chance to do the same with the safeties. And the special teams could certainly use some shaping up.Not too sure about Frisman Jackson. He had a great collegiate career, but he didn't do much in the NFL. A wait-and-see hire. johnnyzip84
A little on FrismanSo THAT's what a leatherneck is! Thanks, Cap'n, I always thought they were ripping off the Marines. The very first time I ever saw the Zips play (my freshman year of 1979), the opponent was none other these Leathernecks of Western Illinois. I was in the card section and my thoughts on Western were derived from my ties to the Pittsburgh area. Having grown up there I was, of course, aware that All-Pro safety Mike Wagner of the Steelers was indeed a product of Western Illinois. The Zips buried 'em
Lee Adams
he needs to find a solid rb and tight end in the spring/summer... hopefully the t.e. will be more a part of the offense..These positions will be fine. What we will need are WRs that can get open and catch the ball down field. Does anyone know who that will be?I'd like to see the TE in the offense more. For example, they need to block well if the Zips can get the ball down by the endzone.the same concern about rb was posed before last year..the same response was given by a number of folks...it wasn't fine last year...until we see who these guys put on the field we won't know if it will be fine.. Lee Adams
Who made a worse choice: USC with Lane Kiffin or Akron with Rob Ianello? Consider the source. Dan Scofield?evreybody has at least one opinoin one way or another(kinda like butt cheeks)...until september gets here it doesn't matter..there is no way to judge a new coach in a new position...especially if he has never been a hc before...ianello will get his chance, probably at least 3 years if not more to turn this thing around...here's hoping he does... If the new coaching staff can do any on field coaching at all, the talent is there at RB.Again, nobody has answered the question. Who are the big play WRs going to be next year? We have a QB with a cannon for an arm and we need to find a way to use it to throw the ball down field and not hand off the majority of the time.MAC schools are horrible at playing from behind. The Zips need to focus on big plays early in games that get leads and then if they want to try to run out the clock in the fourth quarter with seven or less minutes to go, I have no problem with that.Who are the big play WRs going to be? He's a real player. Merriwether and Nadir Brown...one of the two should emerge as a solid #2. Probably Merriwether. Schrock has a chance to come in and compete immediately. I think Randy Greenwood is a logical choice to fill Jeremy Bruce's shoes. If we could somehow pull in a solid JUCO WR, it would be nice. JD did well in California with the JUCO WR's...but I'm guessing those contacts are all lost.Ianello turned Golden Tate from a decent RB to an amazing WR. Maybe one of our RB's will be the answer? Dr Z
Again, nobody has answered the question. Who are the big play WRs going to be next year? The reason nobody is answering your question, is that 4 out of our top five WRs graduated (Bowser, Miller, Bruce and Jones). We have a new coaching staff, and we haven't had any spring practice yet. Jeremy LaFrance will be back. He had the most receptions (43) on our team last year as a junior. Anthony Meriwether & Nadir Brown had 5 catches each last year and will return. Other than Curtis Brown's one catch, the rest of our WRs did not have a catch last year. If you go to the spring game, you will have a better answer to your question. I'm hoping Nadir Brown will work hard and step up this year. The limited time he was on the field last year, he looked promising to me. Nice size too at 6'5".Incoming freshman from Wadsworth (#8) Anthony Schrock. The nice thing is that our receivers will be playing with PN16 at QB. If we can establish a running game this year, wide receiver will not be a problem on this coming team IMO.

Even if the new staff moves him back to WR, that is still an entire year wasted for him.

RACER
i think the new coach at d-line is the most important hire.our d-line has never been anything more than average.we can never rush the passer on a consistent basis.with the 3-3-5 you were blitzing guys that were about 200,and the o-line was 290.we need a coach who can find guys who can rush the passer.i saw numerous times where we had teamsin 3rd and long.the qb from the other team would 5-8 seconds to throw the ball. Dr Z
Frisman Jackson mention today in the PD ''He was always the guy in the room who knew what everyone was supposed to do and a guy on the field who busted his butt every play,'' Scherer said by telephone of Jackson's days with the Browns. ''He wasn't the most talented guy in the room, but he knew every position. He may have been the third or fourth receiver or may have been inactive, but he had the work ethic. Frisman always had a positive attitude. I think that reveals a guy's character. He always had a pleasant disposition. I think that's a real asset.''
