skip-zip Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 The College of Charleston knocked off the #9 Tar Heels last night. The story was a headline on the front of the sports section of our hometown paper today, and there was a big article at the top of Page 2 of the sports section. And it is not the first time it has happened. Charleston also knocked off a #3 ranked Tar Heels team back in 1998.To me, this brings so much truth to the statement......"if you don't schedule the games, you can't win them". Just imagine....If they are getting that much publicity in an Akron, Ohio newspaper for recording such an upset, image what they are getting nationwide today? This could be us. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 URI is a much better team than UNC this year, in terms of the RPI and other metrics. UNC was vastly overrated by the human polls. UNC had an RPI of 48 before losing to Charlston. I would much rather play URI than UNC if we're going for a real statistical advantage. Quote

Captain Kangaroo Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 URI is a much better team than UNC this year.I'm sure Roy Williams would trade rosters in a heartbeat. Quote
Quickzips Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 No way on earth is URI a better team this year than UNC. On a side note though, this is exactly the kind of result that supports scheduling a few games like this. Now Charleston got UNC to come to their place, how, I have no idea. That probably isn't going to happen for the Zips and any consistent top-25 program. But there are still plenty of examples out there of this kind of win for a huge underdog on the road. Not only will Charleston receive a huge boost in RPI from this, but they certainly have gotten a lot of national media attention. That can only be good for your program. You lose 100% of the games you don't schedule. Quote

But unfortunately, they don't have a #9 or a #3 attached to their name, which makes such an upset attractive to sports sections in newspapers all over the country. I'd like to play more teams like either of them....and much more often. Quote

RACER Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 if you schedule teams like duke,n.c. you will lose.look at miami.they are 3-9 now.how does 3-9 help you.you have no chance of winning on (duke,n.c.)thier home court.the same fans that want us to schedule top 25 teams are the same one's that would complain when were 3-9.we lost to a&m, rhode island,n.c. state, but we should play kansas,n.c.,and duke.that makes great sense. GP1 Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 Here is UNC's schedule. This is a team that schedules to win in the post season. Five games against teams from four major conferences in various venues. I'm not saying we need a suicide schedule like this one, but an improvement on our current schedule would help.CofC is a good program with a good coach. Bobby Cremins was a very good coach at GA Tech and spent many successful seasons coaching in the ACC. UNC is in a down season. Nobody should be surprised this happed at CofC. Dodging the gun fire alone in North Charleston would tucker out any visiting team. Quote
