Dave in Green
I've been checking the box scores of most of the Scott County games over the past couple of months in the Louisville newspaper online. In all but one I've seen, Euton has had a double-double, so he must be averaging a double-double for the season. It seems like 14 is his magic number for rebounds, as I've seen him snag exactly 14 rebounds in a large number of those games. I'm guessing he has to be averaging at least 12 rebounds per game. He normally scores in the 12-16 point range, as there are several other players on the team who are big scorers, and they tend to divide up the points. But in his most recent game Saturday, Euton led his team in scoring with 22 points and, surprise, 14 rebounds.
Dave in Green
I finally found Euton's averages for the season, and they're just short of a double-double -- 15.8 ppg and 9.8 rpg.His Scott County HS team won its district championship game last night, and has advanced to the regionals. zip37
D. E. got another double-double Sat nite as Scott Co [24-6] won District 11 title. 16 pts & 12 boards!: Scott Co held their opponent to a score in the 30s.
Dave in Green
Interesting game last night for Euton and his Scott County team. He was cold from the field and so were his teammates. Euton was only 3 of 12 from the field for just 7 points, and his two normally high-scoring teammates had only 13 each. So what happened? They played tough D, holding their opponent to just 14 of 38 from the field (MAC West numbers), and moved on in the Kentucky state tournament with a 72-38 crushing of Madison Southern. I've been critical of the "A" word, or lack there of, in this program. Euton won't help that, but having a 6-8 kid who can shoot the ball is never a bad thing. The more I read about him and think about it, I envision him being our "stretch 4". His length and ability to play on the perimeter should open things up down low for a much developed Zeke. Not to take this too far away from Euton, but since it's a point of contention within at least the ZN fans, I can see a situation in 2012-13 where recruiting an athletic, JUCO shooting guard can do this program wonders. That year, as we are currently looking at, will include:PG - Ennis (soph.), Sullivan (if he sticks around)SG - ???SF - Egner/Green (both Jrs.)PF - Euton (Jr.)C - Zeke (Sr.)I know there will be a lot of additions to the roster from now to then, but recruiting an athletic 2 guard, who can create his own shot could do wonders. Even if that means a JUCO. Even if you take one in the 2011 class, he would be a senior in the year I'm looking at (whith one year under his belt in the program). With the potential of those 6 players I already mentioned, somebody like that could put the team over the hump. Especially considering you would have a developed 7-footer; a 4 (Euton) who can stretch the defense; an athletic 3 in Egner who should be more developed (if nothing else, he can make up for the rebounding lost by having Euton on the perimeter). Plus, it sounds like if Egner's game doesn't come around, Green has the ability to be a scorer. So they should compliment each other; and a PG in Ennis (who obviously the staff is high on considering he is the first 11 commit). Sullivan is an enigma.I'm interested in seeing how KD builds around Zeke and these 2010 recruits. You would think they would be one piece away from being what we all want this program to be ... not only a MAC contender, but a team that can make some noise in the NCAA tournament. Dave in Green
Another good Euton feature: Euton signed with Akron in November and has averaged 15.1 points and 9.4 rebounds a game this season. He's shooting 40.7 percent from three-point range. “I've never seen a kid change his whole body and change his whole game,” Hicks said. “He has gotten where he can score off the dribble, score posting up inside. He's just made himself so much a better player. It's a night-and-day difference.” Louisville Courier-Journal Link

Quickzips
The one thing I really hope regarding Euton is that we aren't getting into another Steve Swiech situation. Don't get me wrong, I like Steve, and I have all the respect in the world for the guy sticking it out this long. However, it is plain to see that he's not capable of playing at this level. He's big and muscular, yes, but his foot speed and body control just isn't there. I think things will be different with Dakotah because of his ability to step out and knock down long jump shots. Steve just doesn't have that ability. I just don't want to get my hopes up as high about this kid as I did about Steve because they both seem to have a similar rap coming out of high school. Big, muscular guys who can score a lot and grab boards in bunches.
Dave in Green
It's obviously not totally predictable as to who can make the leap from star HS player to D1 college player. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. But Swiech played HS ball in Elizabeth, PA. To the best of my knowledge, his HS team played mostly within its own conference and area, and did not play an aggressive OOC schedule against power schools. I believe he was probably the biggest guy on the court in most of his games, and he does have a nice shooting touch. That all added up to high scoring and rebounding averages. I can find very little about Swiech's AAU accomplishments. I can't really find anything about how he matched up against other top HS or AAU stars. Euton has played his HS ball in a hotbed of Kentucky basketball near Lexington and Louisville. In addition to the many highly competitive HS teams he's played against in Kentucky, his HS schedules many games against top HS basketball powers from around the country. He regularly plays against opponents as big and as talented as him or better. He has played national AAU basketball since he was in the 5th grade. His AAU team also plays at the highest level, and Euton has recently focused on trying to shut down the best big men in the country. As recently as last April's King James Classic at the JAR, Euton played pretty much even with 6-8, 260-pound Jared Sullinger, #1 HS power forward in the class of 2010. So, on paper, Euton looks to have better credentials coming in than Swiech had. We all know the key to earning PT with KD is how well you play D. My guess is that Swiech has not earned much PT because his offensive skills exceed his defensive abilities. Like Swiech, Euton has also shown good offensive skills in HS. But Euton plays on a team with two other D1 college recruits, so he doesn't have to do it all himself. Opposing Kentucky HS coaches credit Euton and his team with outstanding defense. That would reinforce the point about Euton being able to contain Sullinger. All of that leads me to believe that the odds of Euton earning PT with the Zips are greater than for Swiech. But no guarantees.

Quickzips
Attendance at Kentucky High School Sweet 16 GAME: 13,790. Average Akron Zips home attendance 2009-10: 2,824. Dave in Green
Euton fouls out, but his Scott County team hangs on to beat Christian Country 69-64 in a quarterfinal game Friday despite, can you believe it: Christian County's ultra-quick junior point guard Anthony Hickey was the culprit, drawing foul after foul on daring drives to the rim. Lexington Herald-Leader Link And then the wheels come off in the semifinals this morning as Scott County loses to Ballard 67-62 despite an apparently good performance by Euton. iHigh Link So Jackson's Josh Egner is the last of the 3 Zips recruits still playing this season. But no guarantees. I agree with this assessment. I grew up in Western PA and it's never exactly been known as a hotbed of high school basketball (there are always exceptions, mama Zeke!). Euton clearly has played against better competition. Pitt rarely is driven by local talent. Billy Knight, Pete Maravich, and Connie Hawkins are the only names that come off the top of my head as former Western PA HS hoops stars who went on the make it big. Sam Clancy was from Pittsburgh and played b-ball at Pitt before becoming a DE for the Browns. This brings me to my final comment on Swiech. How would he look as a DE or OT on the turf of the Info?
