Dave in Green Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 We've been discussing Dakotah Euton and Josh Egner a lot. But what about UA's 3rd forward recruit for 2010, Michael Green (someone please be sure to spell check that name)? The 6-6 forward from Columbus is having a pretty good season. His Dublin Coffman team is in the top 25 in Ohio HS D1. In a recent game, he almost singlehandedly brought his team back from a halftime deficit to win by scoring 25 of his 40 points in the second half. Can he hit from the outside? There's a good description in the following article about how he got into a long-range bombing contest with 5-11 sharpshooting guard Brian Sullivan of Upper Arlington. While his team lost, Green impressed with a half dozen 3s, including a pair of consecutive step-back 3s late in the game, to go along with his aggressive inside game.Green's Outside ShootingOhio Basketball Club rates Green the 4th best HS senior wing forward in the state (they also rate Josh Egner as the 2nd best HS senior power forward in the state behind only Jared Sullinger).Ohio Basketball Club Player RatingsNot enough data here to fully understand Green's potential. No mention of his defensive game, for example. But it sounds as if he may have at least similar potential to Euton and Egner. Quote
GJGood Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Since I am just outside of Columbus, I'm hoping to get out and see Green soon if Dublin Coffman continues to advance in the tournament. If I go, I'll be sure to post something. It just depends on when their games are compared to my work schedule and of course Zips games. Quote
mes102 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Dave, is this the game you're talking about?Hilliard Davidson 54Dublin Coffman 63Coffman's Michael Green (Akron's class of 2010) scored 40 of the Shamrocks' 63 points. Quote

That's insane. But it doesn't matter if you can score 40 points every game, you'll ride the pine if you can't play defense on Dambrot's team. Quote
Dave in Green Posted February 26, 2010 Author Report Posted February 26, 2010 Yep, that's the game. Green scored 25 of those points in the second half. Again, I've seen nothing at all about the kind of defense Green plays.Sometimes I wonder if KD's fixation on defense is because he's never had players who could shoot the lights out in D1. I have to believe that a high-percentage field goal shooter just might break into the Zips lineup without being a defensive ace as long as he doesn't give up more points on the defensive end than he scores on the offensive end. zip37 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Dave, Dave, Dave: defense wins championships, shooting touch can be lost short/long term, but defense is, as Huggins used to say, is 'effort related' and that makes defense a constant and not a variable. Quote
Dave in Green Posted February 26, 2010 Author Report Posted February 26, 2010 Point well taken about effort.I really meant a high-percentage field goal shooter with adequate defense, not no defense. A guy who can't score at all has to be a defensive ace to get PT. A consistently great shooter does not need to be a defensive ace, but cannot relax so much on defense that he gives up more points than he makes, or he becomes a net liability. Quote

Wasn't is just a few years ago that the Zips were recruiting a player by the name of Michael Michigan? Quote
Hilltopper Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Green lead his team in defeating a foe who had beaten them twice this season. His team plays for the district championship on the 13th.http://www.columbuslocalnews.com/articles/...77913148708.txt Quote
Hilltopper Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Heres an update on Green. It may be that he will be the small forward we are looking for next season. http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sport...mp.html?sid=101While Dublin Coffman senior forward Michael Green was accepting congratulatory handshakes for his 30-point performance yesterday that sent him over 1,000 in his career, coach Jamey Collins added a point of his own."Sure, Michael had a great game, but his willingness to take charges was just as important to the outcome of the game as all the shots he made," Collins said.Green, a 6-foot-6 Akron recruit, was matched up against 6-8 West Virginia recruit Elijah Macon and got the better of the sophomore, who missed large chunks of the game and was tentative when he did playGreen went 10 of 15 from the field with four three-pointers and also grabbed seven rebounds for the Shamrocks (20-3), who snapped a string of four straight losses in district title games.Dublin Coffman's victory over Marion-Franklin surprised some of my colleagues on press row who watched both teams play the previous week, but not me. It's all about matchups, and I suspected that Dublin Coffman was ecstatic about getting into an up-tempo game with Marion-Franklin. I watched Coffman lose twice to Upper Arlington, which simply sucked the Shamrocks into its pace. Man for man, Coffman's athletic makeup is as impressive as any team's. The Shamrocks did a great job getting their shooters open against Marion-Franklin, which was hamstrung and of its element after losing 6-8 center Elijah Macon and others to injury or foul trouble. Dave in Green Posted March 14, 2010 Author Report Posted March 14, 2010 Any time a KD recruit outplays a Huggins recruit, it has to raise the level of optimism among Zips fans just a little. Quote
Dave in Green Posted March 16, 2010 Author Report Posted March 16, 2010 A very brief video of Mike Green has just been posted on YouTube: Quote
ZachTheZip Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 Dublin Coffman will be playing undefeated 24-0 Gahanna on Wednesday. If Green can pull his team through that test, they'll likely play the #1 ranked team in the country Columbus Northland. Good Luck, Michael. Pull this off. Quote
Dave in Green Posted March 18, 2010 Author Report Posted March 18, 2010 Gahana was the better team. No sense from any of the stories how much Green's play contributed to the final score other than that he scored 11 points. Columbus Dispatch Link Quote
Blue & Gold Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 Hmm. Green didn't get a mention on any of the All-State Teams. Not even on the quite exhaustive "Honorable Mention" list. That's a little worrisome. Usually the best players in the state will at least get a shout-out on the Honorable Mention list. Quote
Dave in Green Posted March 24, 2010 Author Report Posted March 24, 2010 I do recall seeing one HS player evaluation service giving Dakotah Euton an 85 rating, Josh Egner an 84, and Michael Green an 80. How they will develop in college may or may not follow those ratings. One thing's for sure. Green and his Dublin Coffman team played Gahana a lot closer than Jared Sullinger and his #1 ranked HS team in the country (Northland) did. Quote

His game has continued to improve on both ends of the floor. This season, he was often quoted in the local newspapers -- very mature and team-oriented comments. I look forward to seeing him play at the next level. Quote
Blue & Gold Posted March 26, 2010 Report Posted March 26, 2010 Greetings, JoeMac! Thanks for chiming in. Good to have you a part of ZipsNation! Could you give us a description of Michael Green's game? His strengths, what he likes to do offensively, his weaknesses, perhaps the kind of competition he may have struggled with/against this year? Whatever you've got for a breakdown & what we should look for. Thanks in advance! Quote
