UWGB vs. Akron

the more I look at this game, the more I get excited. When people said they beat Can't and Wisconsin, I was originally worried. But looking at the stats, I think this is a winnable game for the Zips. Also, both of those games were OT victories.

They split with Valpo, who we beat by 20.

They have 3 guards averaging double figures in points, with 6 players averaging five or more points, compared to our 9. As far as minutes are concerned, both teams have 9 guys averaging at least 10 minutes per contest.

Their PG, Rahmon Fletcher leads the team with an average of 16.1 ppg.

Their starting lineup should be

Rahmon Fletcher, G 5'10" 165 lbs.

Troy Cotton, G 6'1" 180 lbs

Bryquis Perine, G 6'3" 180 lbs

Matt Smith, F 6'7" 200 lbs

Randy Berry F 6'9" 225 lbs

They don't have a guy on their roster bigger than 6'9" so I'd look to create an interior presence early.

Also, Bryquis Perine has scored in double digits for the past 7 games and since he's the biggest of the guards I'd imagine them playing him at the three, which would pit him up against Jimmy. In fact, as I look at his stats, he has scored in double figures in 25 of their 33 games.

WGB last 10: (6-4)

UA last 10: (7-3)

I think UA matches up well in this one and I look forward to Wednesday!

I'm not sure why I'm taking a particular interest in this game. Maybe it's the fact that I've been watching way too much basketball analysis and feel the need to do my own, but nonetheless I'm still breaking down this game.

I find it interesting that their 4, Matt Smith, gets such limited minutes. He's seen the floor for 3, 3, 8, 4, and 5 minutes respectively in their past 5 games. Yet, he continues to start. I can't really find anyone who looks like they take his place regularly, except for Pat Smith, who is a 6'9" and 240 lbs forward. His stats are actually worse than Smith's though. He averages just 2.2 ppg and 3.5 rpg.

It actually looks like they run a 4 guard set with 6'3, 190 pound Rian Pearson getting a lot of minutes.

Size-wise I think we will match up very well with them. Both teams have a lot of depth at the guard position so our key is going to be keeping them cool and not giving them open looks.

For the number-crunchers, here's an excel file with per-game averages for both team's starters as well as the teams themselves:

Look for the seniors to have big games.

It has been mentioned on other threads, but it is important to keep playing. More games, more practices, more meetings. Most important for one man= Zeke. The more games he gets this year, the better chance the Zips have next year. Yes, it is important for Humpty, McClan, Nik's development as well. And, nice for the seniors. But Zeke is the key. I hope Dambrot gives him as many minutes as possible.

Hmmm, let's see .....

Zips nearly lose to a weak team that has ONE great shooting guard .... Carlos Medlock of EMU.

Zips nearly lose to a poor team that has ONE great shooting guard .... David Kool of WMU.

Zips LOSE to a mediocre team that has TWO great shooting guards ....

Now the Zips to face a decent team with THREE guards averaging ten plus points per game each.

And the great Zip's defense is going to stop whom?

Hmmmmm ....

VCU does stand out. Obviously, being in the CBI instead of the NCAA or NIT should put Shaka Smart's job in as much jeopardy as KD's. ;)

Sucks for Shaka that he's in a tough conference. If VCU were in the MAC, they'd have waltzed through the MAC tourney and been an NCAA 12-seed.

I predict Sanders will be the CBI MVP.

If VCU were in the MAC, I wonder if Sanders and some of his more talented teammates would have signed up with VCU?

In any case, I think it's safe to say that VCU underperformed to the expectations of its fan base at least as much as the Zips did. VCU just started at a higher level because they had more highly rated players in a more highly rated conference.

looks like the winner of Akron-UWGB will be traveling to Saint Louis. They beat Rhode Island at home by 5, and lost to Rhode Island on nuetral court in first round of A-10 tournament.

Saint Louis also lost at Bowling Green by a score of 55-50.

A few tidbits concerning UA/UWGB game......................

Akrons RPI 89, GB 107,

GB hasnt played since Mar 5th loss to Detroit Mercy

Oregon state has the lowest RPI of all teams in CBI ( 199!) VCU was highest (66)

GB is the only team besides Butler to play in post season from Horizon league( So much for its superiority!)

Heres a news article from GB Press Gazzette........................................................................

................................................................................

....................................

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball team has a good idea what to expect from Akron Wednesday night:

“They’re a very aggressive team on defense. They like to get up,” junior guard Bryquis Perine said of the Zips (24-10), who will host UWGB in a first-round College Basketball Invitational game at Rhodes Arena.

“We’re going to counter that. We’re going to use their aggression against them.”

But can UWGB (21-12) counter well enough to avoid another letdown like their 62-53 loss to Detroit on March 5?

The Titans effectively stunted the Phoenix offense by limiting junior Rahmon Fletcher’s touches. Though Perine scored 22 points, backcourt mates Fletcher and Troy Cotton combined for 5-of-21 shooting and six turnovers.

Guard play has been a strength for UWGB much of the season — Perine has been the go-to guy down the stretch, averaging 16 points while reaching double-figures in seven straight games — but coach Tod Kowalczyk made clear the entire group needs “to step up and play” in the postseason.

“We’ve really got to concentrate on what we did wrong in the Detroit game, especially our guards,” Cotton said. “It’s such a big part of our offense and defense. It starts with the guards. So, with me and Rahmon and Bry’ and Seth (Evans) — what we try to do is we create the tempo, how we want to play. … We know everybody’s going to follow the lead.”

(2 of 2)

Akron’s rotation and approach bears a resemblance to another Mid-American Conference opponent the Phoenix has seen this season.

Can't State forced 17 turnovers at the Resch Center back on Nov. 15 — another of the 10 games in which UWGB has given away the ball 16 times or more — but lost 87-86 as Cotton (25 points), Perine (20) and Fletcher (17) combined for a huge night on the offensive end.

The Zips will counter that trio with 6-foot-5 swingman Jimmy Conyers (10.1 points per game, 39 steals), Steve McNees (8.3 ppg) and point guard Anthony “Humpty” Hitchens (8.5 ppg, 2.7 assists per game). They also are long and “much more athletic” than UWGB in the post, according to Kowalczyk, with 6-foot-7 Chris McKnight, his 6-foot-6 sixth-man brother Brett McKnight and 7-foot freshman Zeke Marshall.

But perhaps the biggest challenge will be the one UWGB couldn’t overcome in its last game — which Cotton said was obvious when looking at the tape.

“I saw we was very frustrated, especially when things didn’t go our way,” Cotton said. “We didn’t knock down the shots like we usually do. Also, on defense, (Detroit) really pounded us inside. We really got kind of distracted, I would say.

“We didn’t stay together as a team and still try to get back in the game. Instead, I think we’d come up (and go) our separate ways.”

The pressure will be on the Phoenix to keep its collective head Wednesday night.

As for the game, well lets just mark this as a one and done for GB. Akron is a better team with a very solid home court crowd. Maybe with Akron losing in the MAC finals this past weekend they will have a "hangover effect" and not be ready to play. That is GB's only chance as I see it.

Interesting comment taken from their fan board. Glad their fans think we are the far superior team...I just hope our team doesn't lay an egg.
