More quotes from Cody, this time from the Plain Dealer.

"The previous coach [J.D. Brookhart] never recruited in-town kids before and I wanted some Akron talent to stay in Akron".

"I want to help turn it around," he said. "Right now Akron's on a down slope because the coach hasn't had a recruiting class. I think they're going to excel more."

We'll see about that second one in time. But the first one is troubling. I always assumed we offered the standouts in the City Series but they always chose to leave home. For the coach to not have established relationships with the city coaches or recruit any players after six years in unacceptable. He sure didn't have trouble getting kids from the suburbs, though.

Perhaps there weren't many in the UA category. They were either too good, and BCS caliber, or they were lower level than UA.

The thing that is really bothersome is the thought process of some local kids. I read a lot of recruiting articles and the sad thing is that the majority of local kids don't even consider UA unless it is their best offer.

There is a real stud DE at an Akron school that is being recruited by every major program. He stated the school he is looking at is a school that every kid dreams and wants to go to. I won't mention the school, because I don't need to go there. He doesn't even mention UA and he is from Akron. :(

Another student from Cleveland Glenville mentions Akron and he says he will check it out because he doesn't know anything about Akron. The kid plays less than an hour from our stadium and he knows nothing about Akron. That is ridiculous. I would doubt that most of the kids in Akron, let alone from other parts of the state, are aware of the facilities UA has. Maybe if they played a high school game, but that's probably the only way.

The University has to find a way to get the word out that UA has top notch facilities.

As a poster from another site stated one time, Akron is a sleeping giant. We are in the hotbed of college football, yet we are an unknown.

The new coaching staff needs to begin an aggressive campaign to recruit kids from NE Ohio. I know Brookhart had a majority of his recruits from our state and western PA, but a lot of them were 4th-tier recruits who saw Akron as a back-up option to BCS and even other MAC schools.

If we could even get a third of the FBS-calibre kids in Summit County to stay here, we would be tops in the MAC.

There is a flip side to this recruiting of Akron kids. There used to be a coach in an Akron HS that wouldn't even let his kids listen to a presentation from the Zips. They would be recruited and signed by anearby Big East school and inevitably, the kid would not qualify, flunked out or got into trouble during the first year on campus.

So I went to Rivals and looked up who Ianello recruited while at Notre Dame. His records from '06 to '09 show a bunch of overrated recruits who haven't amounted to anything. Not what I was hoping. I hope he can find players here that are the opposite of that, players who come in underrated but become good through hard work and determination. I don't know if he's capable of that. We'll have to see.

You are probably right. Maybe Akron needs to have more camps for local kids only or guest speakers that will lure the kids to at least get on campus. I find it amazing that Akron can't get at least a few studs from the area every year.

More camps for area athlets is a good idea. However, the university has to be careful about guest speakers. The NCAA considers guest speakers to be a recruiting tool and it is against NCAA policy.

We used to have a group of former athletes in the area and we had monthly luncheons where we would invite speakers and several students form the area high schools. When Akron discovered we had students attending the luncheons, they backed out due to the recruiting restrictions.

Watched Grice play tonight at the Info. He definitely has some talent, he made a few stupid mistakes but he also made some real nice plays. Definitely a great pickup and good to see a local kid staying here.

He looked great.

Another player we should look into for the future is that LB from Buchtel. I think his name is Odin.

Marlon Oden.

Ricky Powers (Buchtel's HC) is very high on him. iCoach should be trying to become best friends with Ricky Powers.

Anyway, I tried to look Marlon up on Rivals.com but the Football Recruiting page wasn't loading for me.

Oden got an article in the ABJ today. Their coach is really trying to sell the kid for recruiting.

http://www.ohio.com/sports/107412163.html

He doesn't understand why Oden isn't well known. I can answer that for him. It's normally the high school coaches who talk to their contacts to get kids listed on recruiting pages, unless the kid is such a standout that they find him anyway. Powers never did that with Oden, so he doesn't show up anywhere and therefor doesn't have the hype that causes schools to come looking for him.

I wonder if we were trying to recruit him but Powers pushed us away because we're not "anybody" and he only considers the Big Ten as worthy of recruiting. I know certain City Series coaches have done that to their students in the past. I don't know if Powers is one of them, though. I find it hard to imagine that we're not interested in a kid right on our doorstep who plays in our own stadium where the coaches can watch from their luxury suite if he's really that good.

Scout List of Prospects

Apparently, Bre was at the Miami game last week. My nephew goes to Bethel Park High School, so I am pretty excited about landing Bre. Welcome aboard!

Hey if we land the "other" Brumbaugh kid from PA, we'd have TWO Brumbaughs in the 2011 class. What other team could say THAT????

Was in Pittsburgh the last few days and had a chance to read the "Post-Gazette Fabulous 22". So far, UA hasn't landed any of them, but Christian Brumbaugh is on our Scout list. He doesn't have any FBS offers yet, but I did read where he wants to study mechanical engineering. I know UA's College of Engineering has helped land a few kids in the past, so hopefully this gives us an edge (if iCoach wants to offer). Christian leads undefeated South Fayette into the Class AA WPIAL championship on Saturday.

Edit: Christian threw for 2 TDs to lead South Fayette to the WPIAL Class AA Title. This puts them in the state semi-finals of Class AA.
