Death in the Zips family

It was a great gesture to see the whole Zips team at Craigs calling hours tonight in Chillicothe!

That is an amazing showing of solidarity on behalf of Akron's squad. You're all really good friends and good guys for doing that for a teammate. My deepest sympathies are with the Hitchens family for such a horrible and just plain unfair loss.

My family also suffered a devastating and suddenly unexpected loss of a man about the same age as Mr. Hitchens these past few months. He was my uncle and was a family patriarch and role model for many young people, including myself. He was also an Akron School of Engineering Alumni and Basketball fan and wore his Blue and Gold with pride. I remember watching Akron basketball at the JAR with him and his son (my cousin) when they came to visit me when I was an undergraduate (and him telling me about going to Zips games in the 80s when apparently they used to fill that gym to the rafters :)). And I think I've done an alright job trying to keep that tradition alive by taking my cousin to some great games this year. I hope for nothing more than to be able to continue that proud tradition.

My point in all of this is that Humpty, you don't just have a bunch of fans in the stands at games, but you have a second family here. In many ways we all go through triumphs and tragedies together. The blue and gold creates a common bond that I believe is an especially strong one. All of my family's thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Stay strong friend.

 Couldn't have said it better myself. ZNO is a tight group. Students, alumni, athletes....we are all one family. God bless Humpty and his family.

The rumor mill on Humpty transfering is starting to heat up again.

http://www.miamihawktalk.com/discussion/vi...901&start=0

Bottom of the page there are rumors that he's looking at moving to Indiana or Fresno State. Not sure how reliable any of that is. If true I think it would be a mistake on his part. Neither of those programs seem like a place that would offer him a scholarship based on his body of work so far. Again, not sure of the source, but these kinds of rumors have been flying around for the better part of two months now, so it at least raises a little more concern.

Then you have this quote from the above mentioned twitter account:

At home... Miss my AK fam!!! Ima miss yall man real talk

I heard he was looking at lower division schools in the Cleveland area. But yeah, I would say that at this point Humpty is leaving for sure.

I can confirm that he is leaving Akron. Humpty loves the people at Akron and especially his teammates. This is simply about a fresh start for him. I don't think he feels his talents are a good fit with the style the zips play but thise are my words not his. I also think he feels he can best reach his full potential as a player elsewhere. As somebody who has seen every game he has played since the 7th grade he just doesn't look like himself on the court anymore and I believe he wants to find himself again as a player and as a person and with the loss of his father this is a good time for a fresh start.

Well man, what lousy news. Humpty's my personal favorite player on the team.

During the season I kept griping about KD not pushing tempo & running the floor more, so now I'm kinda pissed off again.

Oh well, good luck Humpty, you'll always be a Zip to us & part of our family. We love you and only wish you the very best. You and your family will continue to be in our prayers.

Go Zips.

Disappointing news if it is indeed true (I'll usually hold out until I see something official). Humpty has a lot of talent, but I agree that he was never the best fit for KD's disciplined, half-court style offense. I wish the kid nothing but the best and I hope he can overcome the personal tragedies that he's suffered recently.

If it's true, I wish Humpty the best. I'll continue to follow his Twitter page. I can remember in the championship game this year in the second half when Humpty was on the bench. He went down the bench trying to motivate his team. He looked as though he was ready to become a team leader. Point being, if he is transferring, he never quit on his team or teammates up until the very end. Good luck HH.

PS If he is transferring, I would LOVE for Mike Rasor or Tom Gaffney to an exit interview.

PSS HH hasn't tweeted since May 8th (not usual).
