Being considered for the University of Houston women's basketball head coaching job

Sources told FOX 26 that UH officials will meet this week in Houston with three candidates -- all of them are current head coaches.

They are Prairie View A&M's Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, Todd Buchanan from Houston Baptist University and Jodi Kest from University of Akron.

It is a no-brainer...for Cynthia Cooper. She led the Houston Comets WNBA team to four straight titles. IDK who this Houston Baptist guy is, but I'd say Kest has the least chance of these 3, she'd have to change location and everything.

Houston Baptist University ....

Someone explain to me how this is a no-brainer? Thanks Mack.

i don't know... Mack hired Coach Kest at Akron and knows what she has done there. Since Mack is at Houston now, and networking is a major part of sports, it would not suprise me if Kest gets a call from Mack

You do have a point on Cooper. She was 2 time WNBA MVP, and coached the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA before taking on the college level. Here's some of her stats:

05-06 had a record of 7-21 in her first year at Prairie A&M.

06-07 had a record of 19-14 and went to NCAA tourney and lost to UNC first round.

07-08 had a record of 22-12 and went to WNIT and lost to Texas State by one point.

08-09 had a record of 23-11 and went to NCAA tourney and played Oklahoma first round.

this year going 16-12 with 3 seniors, 8 juniors, 2 sophomores, and a freshman on the team this year.

Todd Buchannan has done an okay job at Houston Baptist. He had a record of 28-4 and 27-6 his first 2 seasons at HBU; however, they weren't in D1 or even the NCAA at that time. Ever since joining the NCAA in 2007, they went 25-57 combined record over the last 3 seasons with a 3-25 record this past year, 8-21 year before, and 14-11 the year before that...

It's close between Kest and Cooper in my opinion. Buchannan not that far since i don't ever doubt Mack's decisions, but he must see something i don't see in his stats as a coach. It might do with resources that he'll have at Houston and not BU, or what, but he doesn't seem too far behind possibly.

So we'll find out soon, and hopefully we'll still have a coach and or coaches by start of next week...

I'm with you. Our new Football HC is a good example (edit: of networking). But, I sure hope Coach Kest stays.

This one has me worried. Jodi is a Northern Ohio girl. But the money Mack can offer at Houston, plus her knowledge of living and coaching in Texas makes her a prime candidate to head south. I see her as the leading candidate. I absolutely hate to see it, but this will always happen to us until we can raise the profile of Akron athletics nationally. I don't see that happening until we get out of the MAC and quite possibly that may not be enough with the huge changes that are looming in college athletics ala super conferences. Let me end that I hope Jodi stays and Tom can build the program.

Coach Kest has contract extended through 2015

Kest is wheeling and dealing. I am certain that she used the Houston interview as leverage. If she still goes to UH, Akron gets a much bigger buyout clause.

She undeniably deserves this contract. She led the Zips to the best season in program history and the future looks even brighter.

I think the attitude of the department is reflected in being able to retain coaches like Kest and Porter when the "big guys come calling"?

This is awesome news, good luck Coach Kest, keep up the good work!

Yeah, I'm tired of Akron being a "stepping stone", but until we get out of the MAC that's all we'll be. The only think that will keep some of these coaches is $$$.

This is great news. She convinced me to find time to attend a few women's games. Wish I could do more, but I'll find time for at least a few next season.

Then I encourage you to get used to Akron being a stepping stone (except in futbol), because Akron and the Mid American Conference is a marriage that will last longer than Larry King (all by himself). :P

I thank Coach Jodi for her service. She has done a yeowoman's job! But, I think it's pretty clear that her ambition lies well beyond Akron. If she's still in Akron at the end of her new contract, it will not be a good sign for Akron WBB.

Nobody else on this board has your insight on this matter j-r. You are correct. No matter what the sport, no matter what the school, the primary criteria most ADs use when deciding whether to hire a new coach is "will they have to move?"
