K-Roo Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 "In other basketball developments, Dambrot said that Cleveland State and Youngstown State will be on the home schedule for the 2010-11 season. The meeting with Cleveland State is part of a four-game agreement with the Vikings, who are coached by former Can't State coach Gary Waters. " http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/91994134.html Quote
Dave in Green Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 This was already discussed a little in the Basketball Banquet thread, but probably deserves its own thread. While CSU and YSU are not perennial powers, they aren't total losers, either. One of the nice things from my perspective is that when the Zips are playing away games at these two schools, they're both easy drives from Akron. So it offers two more good opportunities for Akron-based fans to see the Zips play on the road. Over the long haul, if UA schedules more away games with major programs that won't return the favor by playing at the JAR, at least we'll have these two road games close to home. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 While CSU and YSU are not perennial powers, they aren't total losers, either. That reminds me of a line from Caddyshack: Upon Ted knight saying "...I mean, he's been club champion for three years running, and I'm no slouch myself," Chevy Chase replies: "Don't sell yourself short, judge. You're a tremendous slouch." YSU basketball has won absolutely nothing in the past 30 years. Looking at the Beeghly Center rafters during the Zips/Penguins game two seasons ago...well...let's just say the Zips Women's basketball history over the past 30 years puts the YSU men's program to shame. Don't sell YSU men's basketball short, D.I.G, they're a TREMENDOUS slouch. CSU men's basketball is on a whole different level than YSU. Renewal of the Zips/CSU rivalry is HUGE for local hoops fans. It is a guaranteed 4k attendance game at the JAR, and could be a sell-out if CSU starts the season hot. As a NE Ohio hoops fan, I can't wait to see Dambrot vs. Waters @ the JAR. Quote

As a NE Ohio hoops fan, I can't wait to see Dambrot vs. Waters @ the JAR. +1 YSU excites me not. In terms of what they offer for our overall schedule they are barely a step up from Malone. They might bring a few more fans than the typical road team, but they offer little more in terms of RPI, SOS or general excitement. CSU, especially with Waters there, is a big plus for the schedule. They are a top level Horizon team, close to home with a good enough following that attendance should be higher for these games regardless of what arena they are in. They are a solid RPI and SOS booster and it is a game that should get the attention of a few more NEOhio basketball fans. Quote
Dave in Green Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 No question that CSU has been consistently stronger than YSU over the past decade. Average RPI over the past 10 seasons for UA, CSU and YSU respectively have been 129, 193 and 256. I'd like it if YSU is the weakest team the Zips schedule in the future, replacing some of the even weaker programs UA has scheduled in the past. I'd like it even more if YSU improved their program. Point is, every team in the country schedules a few games against weaker opponents. The good thing about having YSU as one of the Zips weakest opponents is that the schools are close enough that fans can easily travel both ways. That's all. I never said I was especially excited about YSU as an opponent, just that it's better to have a weaker opponent be nearby than halfway across the country. Quote
zipboy Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 We should have 2-3 buy games on the schedule and I consider YSU one of those. I agree that having somone close will draw a few more fans and be inexpensive. I look at CSU as a top 100 team. It would be nice to get have 5-6 OOC top 100 teams on the schedule. As long as Waters is there and Dambrot is at Akron both teams will be in the top 100 almost every year and it seems like a no brainer to play. Quote

GP1 Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 No question that CSU has been consistently stronger than YSU over the past decade. Average RPI over the past 10 seasons for UA, CSU and YSU respectively have been 129, 193 and 256. At what point when teams drop below a certain number should we pretend these rankings don't exist. YSU = 256? I didn't even know there were that many D-1A teams out there. Quote
Dave in Green Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 There are currently 347 D1 basketball teams, so about a quarter of them have averaged worse RPI than YSU over the last 10 years. CSU has only been a top 100 RPI team for the past couple of seasons. For the rest of the decade, their performance was only somewhat better than YSU's. UA's average was also much lower before KD arrived and made the Zips a consistent top 100 RPI team. Quote

Quickzips Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 On the Can't board it is going around that YSU has backed out of playing in a series that was to involve Akron, Can't, Cleveland St. and YSU. Anyone heard anything on this and how it might affect the Zips? Quote

Anyone heard anything on this and how it might affect the Zips? Well if they were to back out of a game with Akron, that would mean Akron would have to find a replacement game. Otherwise there would be no effect. In response to GP1's question, the answer is 40. You guys sure ask the tough questions. Quote

I'll go with 42; the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. I enjoy both teams coming to the JAR because it brings more fans to the game. Also gives Zippy the chance to entertain the fans further by fighting with the 'guin and the vike. Quote

"Anywhere on the web." You have got to be kidding. Its everywhere! NC State has its entire athletic web site devoted to the game calling it their marque matchup of the year. The early line has the quins as a 22 point favorite. Quote
ZippyforPresident Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 I love the map on the YSU page with the logos and their territories. Zips, Vikings, Penguins, and Piss Colored Purple Losers, that's awesome. I love these match ups. The more OOC Ohio schools we play the better, in my opinion. So many people fail to realize that we have some AMAZING college basketball in this state. This is not just a powerhouse football state. I'd love to see (not necessarily annual, but at least an aim to play "match up" with the ooc teams within state, we'd all love those bragging rights!! And UA and "that other team" and maybe even OU could throw a wrench at some of those "Upper/High major opponents") match ups with all of the conferences within our state: A10, MAC, Horizon, Big East, and Big Ten. There are a ton of sensational basketball match ups in that list.. Keeping it in state at that level would be really fun. And outside of baseball and soccer it would offer Akron and some more MAC teams an opportunity to kick our in state big ten opponent in the gunardis As far as the "rumors" surrounding the dissolution of the NE Ohio MAC/Horizon scheduling next season, I haven't heard anything uber convincing, just a lot of hearsay. All that I have to say is that Akron will not be the ones backing away from the proposed deal. From the appearances neither MAC school seems like they want out of the scheduled games. I'd say YSU is the linchpin here, but I guess we'll see. I really hope they keep all of the match ups. (P.S. I didn't know Ron Jaworski was a Penguin Alumnus. Very nice job with the football ad. Distinguished alumni = awesome promotion) Quote

They should schedule where there would be two home games and two away games for each school. However I hope they stay in it because I enjoyed these games!!! Maybe STO or FSN Ohio could pick these up. Considering STO is all over CSU, I am sure they can make a deal happen. Quote
