Based on this and what we know from before and this addition, here is what I have for the Zips 2010-2011 OOC Basketball Schedule:

Home Games:

Cleveland State

Youngstown State

Oral Roberts

VCU

Away Games:

Dayton

Minnesota

Temple

Oakland

UIC

Neutral Site Games:

Miami (FL)

Indiana State

Three spots to go.

That is certainly a more respectable schedule than what we've seen in past years so far. Going on the road and challenging ourselves with an on the rise Big-10 Program along with two quality A-10 Programs (one of which figures to be a preseason top-25 squad). Home games against some decent Horizon schools from the area that should help attendance. The return bracketbuster from VCU should be a good challenge. Also an ACC school to look forward to during the tournament in Vegas. Oral Roberts, Oakland, UIC and Indiana State aren't big names but we aren't talking about St. Francis and Malone anymore. Hopefully we can fill the last three spots with some more quality mid-major teams at home and maybe one more road game against a power conference team. Starting to look like maybe, JUST MAYBE Dambrot is taking all the scheduling criticism to heart.

VCU will not play the Zips until 2011.

Hopefully it doesn't end with us getting screwed by the refs like last time we played down there.

Edit: Game @ Dayton confirmed, Wednesday, Nov. 17th

I'll assume you are talking about Dials getting grabbed while shooting a three-pointer at the buzzer, and it was unbelievably called a "non shooting foul"? That highlight was in the internet for a long time, and maybe still is.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I still believe that he would have hit all three FTs.

With Dial's FT shooting average, that would have been a safe assumption. And then we go to a 3rd overtime, and still have a chance to beat a ranked team on the road.

I really believe it was a situation where they were afraid to make the CORRECT call because he was so far away from the basket. But really, there was no excuse for not making that Dayton kid pay for one of the dumbest last-second moves ever in a college basketball game.

Apparently I can still get heated about that botched call...haha. If I remember the post game interview with Mr. Dials correctly, when asked about the call and what he was trying to do, Nick responded with something to the extent of "I guess they [the blind official] thought I was trying to pass the ball, and I was trying to pass the ball, to a guy named the basket." Honestly, what player tries to pass the ball forward to no one when time is about to expire and you're down? Not Nick Dials, that's for damn sure... -sigh-

There's no question Nick would have nailed every one of those free throws. If anybody should doubt that one they can review the footage of the Zips v. Seminoles game in the NIT where Nick went "LeBron" in overtime.

And last but not least, I'm extremely excited about this years OOC schedule. Minnesota, Dayton, Temple, Oakland, Oral Roberts, and home games against regional teams in CSU (who could be pretty competitive again this year) and YSU (I know, but they could get better)? If anybody on here wants to make the claim that Coach Dambrot didn't thus far schedule an absolutely beautiful OOC, then that person must be spending their fall/winters drinking more Roo Brew than I ever thought possible and obviously not watching college basketball.

We have some room to really prove ourselves this year. Every one of those games is a game we can win, and against some of the best that "mid major" basketball has to offer right now, not to mention a "mid major" level bs... err bcs "team." To be honest, I don't think minnesota is really the biggest challenge thus far, I'd say it's probably Dayton.

I love the road game against the Flyers. As long as I don't end up having a scheduling conflict I'm chomping at the bit to make the trip down to UD (and not just for the Hudepohl :CK_brew: ).

And in the event that Coach D stumbles across this message board every now and again... Great job Coach. I can't wait until basketball season, the future is NOW and it is BRIGHT!

GO ZIPS!!! :champs:

I don't think I would say Dayton is the best on our OOC schedule thus far. Temple is expected to be a preseason top-25 team from all indications. Don't get me wrong, Dayton will be a challenge, but I think Temple. Don't discount Minnesota too much. Tubby Smith is putting together a pretty nice program in that little corner of the Big 10, 11, 12, whatever the heck it is now. They won 21 games last year and made the tournament, even beating Butler in a preseason tournament. The Gophers may not be the flagship program of the that conference, but it isn't like we are talking about Penn State or Northwestern here.

As far as the schedule goes, like I said earlier, it is lightyears ahead of where our normal OOC schedule is. If VCU isn't coming this year, then that indeed hurts a little bit, but it is still a solid schedule. The key again is going to be who we fill those last spots with. If we can find some more solid mid-majors and maybe a decent power conference team or two the schedule will certainly be more in line with what many on here have been clamoring for. If we fill those spots with teams like Malone and St. Francis, then it really isn't that significant an improvement.

Under Coach Dambrot (6 seasons?), what are the Zips top 2 OOC victories?

Sounds about right to me. Two of those during the NIT, the other during a preseason tournament.

I think there are going to be some opportunities to add to that list here this year. Knocking off Temple again, Dayton or Minnesota would certainly push that Mississippi St. win off of the top 3 and maybe even leapfrog Florida State. A win over Miami(FL) would also have to be in the running for the top 5. I suppose that is a little disheartening to see that we don't have those impressive wins on our resume despite all the W's over the last few years. Now it looks like we are going to have those opportunities this year. Have to take advantage of them.

Some varying thoughts on the those games --

Yes, they were all on the road. But I bet we would have beaten them at home too. Note: * Mississippi State was on a neutral court *

It gives you some greater appreciation for how good Dials/Middleton/Joyce/Travis/Wood teams were. Since they've departed, K.e.n.t. is kicking our butt with regularity and we're O-fer on big OOC games. Record-wise, the pre- and post-2008 teams were very similar. But the pre-2008 guys were a lot better teams. Of course, the post-2008 guys have some time remaining to make up ground.

With the Mississippi State win coming in 2005, I would have hoped for another couple major (BCS) regular season OOC wins since that time. One is too few. I hope this team breaks the dry spell. It will go a long way in re-awakening public interest in the hoops program.

No argument about the contributions and talent of the guys you listed.

Of course the "post 2008" guys are the ones that had the most important 4 game winning streak in Zips history.

True. When I think of Cedrick Middleton I see him face down on The Q court with clenched fists. And when I think Nate Linhart I see him holding the Championship trophy.

The NIT wins trump the CBI loss... but the NCAA berth is the king.

Those 2008 guys built the foundation that made 2008-09 possible. They did a bunch of the heavy lifting. Nate showed the Zips what it was like to have the will to win. It will be interesting to see which guy on the current roster emerges to keep the Zips on that trajectory and get them back to the NCAA.

McNees clearly has the will to win. Nik has the energy and emotion required .. can they pull it together. The talent is here. I wonder how the open gyms are going this summer with the revamped roster. What's happening now has a big impact on the 2nd Saturday in March.

You guys crack me up!!!

What made 2008-09 possible was the improbable inbounds save and miraculous 3-pointer from Humpty (gone). Not to mention his assist to end the game.

The only trajectory that I remember is watching the ball as it left Humpty's hand heading for the rim.

He saved EVERYONE's XXX.

Check this out. I like what read on his page.

Apparently what ever he said was not for public consumption. Its blocked from view. Please let us know what he said.

Not blocked for me. It's Chauncey Gilliam's Twitter.

When that game appeared out of reach late in the 2nd half, it was Linhart & C. McKnight that willed the Zips back into the game. Humpty's heroics were great plays .. but they have no impact on the result of the game if Nate & Chris don't pull the Zips back into it.
