ZZZips Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Per the Toledo Blade beat writer that covers UT: "UT football to host Miami Hurricanes at the Glass Bowl in 2015, then make a return trip and play at Sun Life Stadium in 2016. " Source: http://twitter.com/ZachSilka Quote

Let'sGoZips94 Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 I don't think we need to worry about this. The world is supposed to end in 2012. Quote
you am i Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Miami was the undefeated national champion in 1987. Toledo played them at the Orange Bowl late in the season and gave them one of their tougher games before losing 24-14. Not many people remember that game, but it was maybe the best showing by a MAC football team ever. I think that's the last time they played, but its games like that that give a program confidence that they can play with the big boys. Quote

I think Miami beating LSU on the road was an exponentially better showing. Oh yeah. Amazing accomplishment, and well worth reliving. In 1986, LSU was 1-0 and ranked 8th in the country after beating 7th-ranked Texas A&M in the season opener. Tiger Stadium is better known as Death Valley. Miami (Ohio) was a ridiculous underdog, but pulled off a huge 21-12 upset. LSU responded by losing only one other game during the regular season (by 2 to Ole Miss), finishing 9-2 and ranked #5 in the country. They lost to #6 Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl, but they were still a stacked team. That's a once in a lifetime deal for an unranked MAC team. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 Elton mentions it in the PD. Also gives us a "puncher's chance" at beating Indiana, but no such hope against Kentucky. Also mentions the soccer stadium improvements, but only calls us "league favorites" instead of national favorites. Quote

A tad different than when Lee Owens took the Zips into Death Valley. If I recall correctly...and it has been a long time ago... the Zips were down 42-0 at halftime. Owens called for the on-side kick to start the second half, and it was successful. The Zips took the ball inside the 10 yard line, then got stuffed. I think we lost 56 - 0? And "Owens Guy" -- No need to defend your man here. I'm merely pointing out history... obviously not a knock on Lee, who was very early in his UA career. Now the 34-0 end-of-first-quarter vs. Iowa... that one wasn't one of Coach Owens' finest performances. Quote
Kangaroo Craig Posted July 28, 2010 Report Posted July 28, 2010 What about Miami's win over Northwestern in the opener around 1995? I think that was NU's only loss until they faced SC in the Rose Bowl. Quote

psc2009 Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 NIU also had that string where they were knocking off the BCS teams. The MAC doesn't win consistently against Top 25 teams, but every now and then, the conference throws out a huge showing. For the UT / Miami series, the part that makes me happy is that the @ Toledo game is first. I was imagining Toledo going down to Miami and then the Canes saying, "You know what, never mind". It's good to see that won't happen. Quote

I think that was NU's only loss until they faced SC in the Rose Bowl. Looks as if Northwestern was a slightly better team than LSU. They both lost their bowl games, but Northwestern's only regular season loss was to the RedHawks while LSU lost regular season games to the RedHawks and Ole Miss. Northwestern was rated as high as #3 in the country while LSU reached only #5. So far that gives Miami the top two football upsets in MAC history. Quote
