Training Camp

Thanks for the update Mike.

The videos are ok and the Twitter issue is a waste. Who cares?

Let the real fans go to practice and watch it live...not some Twitter update.

Easy there! Some of us cannot make it down to Akron on a weekday to watch practice. Some of us actually use Twitter as an effective commuication tool to keep up on our favorites things (college sports, microbreweries, music). Just because YOU don't see Twitter as a worthwhile form of communication, do not critique those of us who use it to keep informed about our team.

-End of rant.

Twitter is a great communication tool. This morning, the coach has put up an open invitation to ask him questions about practice via Twitter.

Frank Stams will not be returning beside Frenchy in the broadcast booth.
I'm disappointed to hear that, I thought Frank did a great job. Nice guy also, I remember speaking to him at the football golf outing his first year on the job. He was very concerned what Zips fans thought. He was asking our group a lot of questions and listening to the answers. I could tell right away he was concerned about his job and wanted to learn as much as possible about the team. I'm guessing he is moving up in his career. I couldn't find anything with a one minute google search. Good luck to him! :thumb:

On the 1st trip to Syracuse, Frank spent some time with me and my buddy at the Syracuse Suds Factory. He was energetic and entertaining and more than made up for the lousy beer at that place (almost no detectable difference between any of their mediocre, at best, offerings). I thought he did a nice job teaming with Frenchy as well. I can't imagine he was doing the Zips gig for the money.

I wonder if former WKNR host and Zip grad Jeff Thomas will be in the running.

Anyone care to guess or suggest other candidates?

With ISP getting bought, I really hope they can somehow improve the sound quality of the broadcast. I don't need or want an "FM-type" sound; too antiseptic. AM rules for sports. But the Zips broadcasts always sound so tinny and low budget to me.

I'm wondering, at this late date, if they might end up bringing Joe Dunn back in the booth and sending someone brand new on the sidelines. Don't get me wrong, I like Joe Dunn and all but I am HOPING for someone with a little more radio presence next to Frenchy. They sure don't have a lot of time.

There are some communications students who call high school football games on 88.1 WZIP. They're not too bad at it, either. Most of them are huge Zips fans and would jump at a chance like this.

The University of Akron football team wrapped up its seventh day of preseason training camp on Wednesday, with a three-hour afternoon practice at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field. Today's lone session, the eighth of 30 total leading up to the start of the season, was sandwiched between two two-a-days. Yesterday the squad took to the field for workouts in both the morning and evening, and will do the same on Thursday.

Ya know watching these videos of Ianello, he really comes off as an arrogant, full of himself, schmuck. Maybe that's unfair from just watching YouTube videos and having never met the guy (which is kind of hard when he cancels events to connect with the alumni), but I usually get a pretty good sense of people just from observing them. I can see why a lot of players have had problems with him. J.D. may have failed as a coach, but he was always a very sincere and caring guy that obviously put a lot of stock in his relationships with people. Lee Owens was the same way. I guess none of this will matter if the guy wins, but I'm just making the observation that he seems like a real douche bag. Douche bags that lose don't last as long as nice guys that lose. I hope Rob realizes that and knows he has to win.

To me Ianello seems focused and determined, someone with a clear plan. JD was a great guy, but I think he struggled in developing a team vision. Ianello hasn't.

Mike Perry's MAC Football Preview of the Zips from the Cleveland Fan.
Nice read. I like this statement...“The first thing I told my team is that they are my team, they’re my guys,” Ianello said. “I know they had been recruited by someone different, but this is my team and we’re all in this thing together. My goal is to get everyone on the same page and everyone working for the same brand."

At last, an explanation for that pesky half game in both the win and loss column for last season.....

"Sophomore Patrick Nicely started eight games behind center for the Zips in 2009, connecting on 120-of-222 passes for 1,349 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions. The Akron offense, however, averaged less than 20 points per game as the Zips failed to win a road game and split three games at InfoCision Stadium. " :thumb:

New dorms up all over campus, and they put these guys in BULGER??? I guess it's better than good ole Brown Street, where they used to stick us, but there's certainly much better options on campus nowadays. I don't think these guys deserve to be pampered but camp is miserable enough as it is, if there are options to make it less miserable (like the Exchange st. dorms or the Honors dorm) why not take advantage of it?

Proximity to an all-you-can eat buffet at Rob's is a factor that should not be overlooked.

Brown Street is where we all used to live. At one time, it was considered modern living on campus. Christ do I feel old. I wonder what landfill they put Brown Street in?

Did you play in the era when jock dorms were still legal? The NCAA had done away with the practice by the time I played, mandating that you couldn't seclude the athletes in their own dorms, so the coaching staff just made sure all the freshman were stuck together in Brown were they could keep an eye on us and then as sophomore year approached it was a race to see who could secure the best party house across exchange (in those oh so lovely neighborhoods where I had the best years of my life). Everyone did still get their Brown experience again when camp rolled around though. Saw some crazy stuff in that dorm, can't believe the Info sits on top of those hallowed grounds now.

Aaaahhh and that can be great for the 190 pound freshman linebackers, and suicide for the 330 pound fat guys who need to drop about 20 in camp. We used to have to make the march over to Rob's from Brown in my camps, but I know in the JD years he had the team eating a little bit better over at the Martin Center for meals. Sounds like Ianello has em back at Rob's.

Yes. Some of you might be shocked to know what went on in that place.

"We installed (the two-minute offense) both on offense and defense, and in the teaching segment we did it in a pass skeleton without the linemen," Ianello said. "The situation was – with two minutes left in the game and the offense had the ball near the 30 (yard line), two timeouts and needed a touchdown to win."

I'm liking the way iCoach says "Go Zips" at the end of his videos. :thumb:
