Captain Kangaroo Posted August 5, 2010 Report Posted August 5, 2010 Watching the Zips play Penn State last season, it was really frustrating to see the ultra-mega-conservative JD pretty much run out the clock from the get-go, and try to get out of the game without any injuries. Conversely, Penn State tried the fake kicks...went for it on 4th-and-1...threw the ball down field...etc. We had a nice lead @ Cincinnati a few years ago, and JD went into his offensive shell. We were down 3-2 to Ohio State in the 3rd quarter, and JD was happy to run it up the middle 3 times and punt. We were pounding NC State, and he let them come back by coaching conservative. Only when we had to score at games-end did he loosen things back up and drive the ball. I'd rather see the Zips lose to K.entucky 52-27, trying to win, than lose 31-3 with Zach Campbell punting 14 times. I think September's BCS games will give us some great insight as to what type of coach Ianello is. I hope he tries to win every game. Quote
ditchrider1 Posted August 5, 2010 Report Posted August 5, 2010 I hope he plays to win as well with the BCS OOC teams. My main concern with teams of the past are the stupid penalities by the Zips at very crucial times against the BCS teams. We are making strides, have the momentum switching our way and then BAM...15 yard personal foul call on the Zips and drive either our offensive drive is stalled or accelerated for the other team. This happened at Purdue a few years back and then the wheels seem to fall off and they blew us out. I think with discipline will come success Quote

I think with discipline will come success 2 years ago against Wisconsin, we were down 17-10 coming out of halftime with the ball. The kickoff was ran back for a TD to tie and gain all the momentum, but the refs called a block in the back and put us back behind the 50. We lost momentum and they bowled us over for more than 400 yards rushing. Remember in the middle of the JD years the O-line was good for about 50 yards worth of penalties per game, always at the worst times. We were consistantly one of the most penalized teams in the country. Can Ianello reverse that? Quote
Dr Z Posted August 5, 2010 Report Posted August 5, 2010 ...and they bowled us over for more than 400 yards rushing. Good-effing-bye stack defense. BCS teams would just pound the crud out of that little lineup. I think one of the reasons we can go out and try to beat BCS team is our bigger defensive lineup. Hopefully we can execute. Offensively we need to stretch the field with some PN7 play action passing. I can't wait to see that! Quote
InTheZone Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 That Cinci game in '06 was ridiculous. JD came out letting Getsy throw the ball and before you knew it, it was 14-0 and we had 200 yards of offense in the 1st quarter. I was sitting there gleefully anticipating BCS win #2 for the year, and a blowout at that. Then we packed it in, and lost. I don't know if we gained a positive yard after the the 15 minute mark. I agree, JD was way too conservative in the BCS games. I think Purdue '05 scared him out of letting the guns blaze for 60 minutes. I hope Ianello coaches to win, not to avoid catastrophe. Quote

I know I am establishing myself as the video game nerd in these forums... but PNice has got a wonderful arm in the NCAA11 game this year. Once I get into the MAC schedule with the zips, he starts torching secondaries who are a step slower. Play action on 2nd and short is killer. Definitely looking forward to seeing the pro-style offense in action. I bet we rack up some heavy rush numbers in the MAC when the safeties have to hang back out of the box to respect #7's arm. Quote
GP1 Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Offensively we need to stretch the field with some PN7 play action passing. I can't wait to see that! Play action only works if you can run early. I want to see some big plays passing out of PN7 being set up by an effective short passing game. I don't think we will be able to run on BCS teams. Quote

I am a totally old school guy. Establishing the run is paramount because it sets up play action. There is absolutely no reason why the Zips shouldn't be able to establish the run against the likes of Syracuse, Kentucky and Indiana. None of these teams are exactly sporting a savage front seven. In 2009, Syracuse was the best run defense of the bunch with a final ranking of 13th in rushing defense, which is fantastic on paper. Indiana checked in at #79 and Kentucky was an impressive 100. If the offensive line can get a push, we can definitely run the ball against these three BCS teams, IMO. Once play action works, all three of these games are winnable. I am not saying we will win all three, but all three are winnable. As happy as most on this board are about scrapping the "gimmick" 3-3-5 defense, I am happier that we are scrapping that gimmick spread offense. Our offensive scheme should keep us in most games this year! Quote

They may not have savage front sevens, but they still have better players than Akron. Throw early to set up big plays down field. Try to get the lead. The run out the clock if you can. Quote

Point well taken, GP1. I am just a bit leery of our lack of experience in the receiving corps. Jeremy LaFrance is legit, but not much game time backing him. Or maybe I just want to see the Zips be able to control the line of scrimmage and bloody the other team's lip. Quote
