Catching up with Anthony Buford

Found this short bio on AB. IMO - one of the top 2 guards ever to play at UA. He proved his worth, transferring from UA to UC for his senior season and starting alongside Nick VanExel on the Bearcats 1992 Final Four team.

AB has put on a little weight? I'm glad to see it isn't only me putting on a few extra pounds in middle-age. :D

Great find. I'm a little dissappointed that it does not mention the 3 seasons he played for the Zips. But, I guess that's real minor fact when you consider what he got to be a part of in his only season in Cincinnati. Another interesting fact: He hit a big, last second bucket to beat a great Ashland team at the JAR in his last season here before transferring. And, the coach of that Ashland team was??

So, who is that other top guard to ever play here? If it's McLaughlin, I agree with you, and I think Buford played his first two seasons here as his backcourt mate.

I guess I missed seeing him play -- both when Akron played here in 1991, and the previous year when Huggy brought the Bearcats to Hawaii. Where does he work as a TV analyst -- what network?

If you page down, you will note that Mike Waddell serves on the same Board with AB.

Go Zips!!

AB does color commentary for the Bearcats sports.

Watching a replay of the Bearcats/Zips game coverage from 8-or-so years ago, I laughed out loud at his commentary after Bryan Hipsher got absolutely destroyed by a 6' 9", 270 lb UC player on a layup attempt -- "That kid has absolutely NO business being out on the floor against these guys!"

Funny story #2 from that game - The Zips went up 2-0 to begin the game. I began chanting "OH-VER-RAY-TED" in the stands. The Bearcat fans looked at be like I was nuts. I said - "Hey, I gotta get it in while I can!" I think the next time the Zips scored, we cut the Bearcat lead down to... 22-4. I knew what I was doing.

At the risk of side-tracking the thread, I will answer your question. The best guard to ever play for Akron was Len Paul.

Was that the game in Cincinnati (2003-04) where we were taken to the 'shed by the 'cats? If so, I was in the stands and man that was a painful evening. Worse, I sat next to my niece (a UC grad) who gloated all night. If I recall, Hollingsworth was expected to really compete that night (he was from the Cincy vicinity if I am correct--and struggled along with the rest of the Zips). Ahh memories!!

Go Zips!!

Zipmeister....I consider myself an old Zips fan, but I was not living in the Akron area yet when Len Paul played his career here in the early 70s. If you got to see him play, I understand you got a real treat. I know that both he and McLaughlin both have their jerseys retired, so Len must have been a great player as well. But, I am glad I was here for the McLaughlin years. The way that little freshman showed so much maturity playing the point on our way to the OVC title and NCAA tournament was quite amazing.

I'm surprised nobody jumped all over the opportunity to answer the question of what coach we were playing against when Buford hit the last second basket to beat Ashland 20 years ago. I'm sure many of you know the answer. But if you don't, you certainly know the coach.
