InTheZone Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Something to keep it light during a sickening season. We all know those guys who we hear great things about, who show up on rosters and depth charts in the spring, who we hear are maybe in camp, and then never, for one reason or another, find the field. Who's on your Zips all-time "Legends of the Practice Field" team? We all now the recent ones like Bain and Tonga, but I'm curious to see who the old timers around here can dig out of their memory. We've certainly had quite a few of them through the years. NOMINEES: QB- Jonathan Gill RB- Ben Ruhlin, EJ Lilly, Christian Morgan WR- TE- OL- DE- DT- Ryan Bain LB- CB- S- K- P- Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Ben Ruhlin - The Zips career leader in Blue Gold Game carries and rushing yardage. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 We all now the recent ones like Bain and Tonga, ... Bain was a bust, but Tonga is only in his 4th game (of a 2-year eligibility window). He has time to do something. Quote
GP1 Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 I'm curious to see who the old timers around here can dig out of their memory. I dont know how good i would be at legends of the practice squad, but there were some pretty good players during the Faust years that spent/are spending time in prison. Now that would be a fun topic. I'll have to put some thought into it. We could call it "Legends of the prison exercise yard brought to you by the University of Akron.....or something like that. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Can EJ Lilly get the other RB spot? Or should it be Christian Morgan? Quote

InTheZone Posted September 21, 2010 Author Report Posted September 21, 2010 My first nominee at QB has got to be Jonathan Gill, a walk-on with arm strength not even surpassed by the legendary Brett Farve. I mean this guy could damn near throw the ball 100 yards, and could fire a 50 yard bullet that would break a receiver's hands. Most of his passes in practice were dropped because they were simply thrown too hard for anyone to catch. It's too bad his accuracy stunk and he couldn't read a defense to save his life. He was a true legend of the practice field. Quote

If we can get 22 guys from that, it will be truly sad! Only guy off the top of my head that I played with that served any real time was Thomas Plummer. Quote

Mack Warren was crack dealer/DT (recruited by Faust, but busted under Owens). He was arrested, and subsequently kicked off the team. Of course, he finished his career at K.e.n.t. State. Quote

Lilly & Christian Morgan! Yessss! Those are classics! I was completely amped when we signed both of those guys. How about the 3-Time Mr. Football candidate RB from Ravenna? Wasn't his name Marcus Sanders? Ran for like 4,000 yards his senior year. He may have gotten 3 carries for us during his career. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Bates Szakos at WR? Or do we need to place him on the all-IR team? Quote
Buckzip Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 The first name I thought if was Nerim Jumbalay(sp) but that's basketball. Marcus Sanders beats out Morgan at RB. IMO Dwayne LeFall was supposed to be the next Jason Taylor. Doug Sumner a LB from Cincy was supposed to be a stud. John Clark can go in the would have been a stud if he didn't sell crack side. Quote

Blue & Gold Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 DT Demetrius Conwell. I'm dating myself with that one. This name goes back to when I began closely following Zips recruiting. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 DaShawn Brown. Kenny Chapman (although, to be fair, I think this guy puts up HUGE numbers if Weems would have been a better Passer than a Pitcher). Lew Lawhorn. Matt Carter. Nate Robinson (I think French predicted MAC defensive POY for him). Quote
zipboy Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 Donte Cloud - the steal of the MAC per an expert on Joe Dunn's radio show that week. I will go even further and say the whole Glenville contingent that JD signed his first year. Brendon Banks - switched from ASU to Akron after a coaching change. Matt Domonkos - transfer from Wisconsin, isn't that the year we had to have school wide tryouts? J Sharps - highly touted WR, never trust a guy with one letter to his first name. Jason Sekinger - transfer from MN, did he get more than 10 snaps? On the opposite end, how about a walk on who came out of nowhere - Lavel Bailey. Quote
