I didn't think it was possible for us to be better than we were last year, but I think we are. Here's to hoping I didn't just jinx us for OSWho tomorrow night,

My favorite line of that article is: "We're 5-0 and I've been cranky."

Words really can't describe how excited I've been since soccer season started and I see win after win over good teams. I'm glad coach isn't content to rest on success.

Soccer is such an irritating sport though. Losing the NC last year on kicks after an undefeated season is hard to accept.

Now just knowing how low scoring games usually are and that 1 mistake can lose you a game where you completely dominate is scary.

I think that if two teams are tied after two overtimes if should be declared a draw. Co-champions...!!!!

Think about it. It is necessary to determine advancing up to the championship game by penalty kicks

when neither team wins out right.

However, why punish one team with a loss by penalty kicks when they played an equal score game?

Is it really necessary that one team is declared a winner when the teams actually tied?

And, no, its not like kissing your sister. Your sister might be Pamela Anderson.

Lovely! :rolltide: Take note that even some fans of UC-Santa Barbara are falling for the Zips! (from the BigSoccer Board): "Akron is good. There's no doubt about it, and they've got to be awfully hungry. Nobody beat them last year, yet they don't end up the National Champion. If the Gauchos aren't there in December (like hell they won't!), I'll be pulling for the Zips (hope that was a good jinx). The way they've played the last few years, they deserve a title." Also note that both teams wear blue and gold. (But then again so do some others) :screwks: and of course what we're playing for: :NCAAC:

Totally disagree. If the NFL run overtime like soccer, they would lineup at the 30 yard line with just a kicker and have a field goal contest. Hockey does it proper. During the season they have a shootout due to the length of the season, come playoff time, you have to score a goal playing hockey. In soccer you should have to score a goal playing soccer, not a kick ball competition. Maybe it's okay during the season, but come tournament time...play the game until you get a winner.

With that said, go Zips....don't let it come down to a kickball competition in the tourney, score a goal!

Pk's are a part of the game you practice for them and if that time comes you make the shot/save or you miss the shot/save.....There is not a bigger moment in sports then pk's cause all the pressure of the entire season is on you.....ya it sucks but if we win last year we are not complaining as much....in world soccer they always say it is the cruelest way to lose...

If it was under old NCAA rules (20 years ago), there would be co-champions. They ended that in 1989 but there were two instances of co-champions (1989 and 1967). They have also played 4OT games that had to be decided by penalty kicks. I've advocated a system where you reduce the number of players in each successive overtime (opens space and there is a strategy of who you leave on the field. Do you keep your strong defenders or keep your strikers? In our case, we could have both just by leaving Kofi on the pitch ;)). In the fourth overtime, the goalies get pulled. At least you're still playing soccer and once the goalies are gone, you will get a goal at some point.

I HATE the NFL's overtime rules. How can you have sudden death in football? It basically goes down to which ever team wins the coin toss will win. It is unfair seeing that one teams offense might not even make it onto the field for a chance. It would be just like if an MLB game ended in sudden death, and a team losing without even getting the chance to bat or in soccer, but only allowing 1 team to take PK's. Just not fair at all, and although it is a cruel way to lose a game, at least each team has an equal chance.

Good news for you, the NFL changed the rule in the playoffs this year. Each team will get at least one possession in the extra period unless the team that wins the overtime coin toss scores a touchdown on its first possession.

Here is some history for you:

The N.F.L. has had 14 overtime playoff games in the last 16 years, with the team that won the toss going 7-7. In the regular season, from 1974 to 1993, teams that won the toss won the game 46.8 percent of the time and teams that lost it won the same 46.8 percent of the time.

Top Drawer Soccer also has a list of the best players by conference. Do you think Akron is dominating the MAC? The Zips have the first ten players, eleven players in all and Perry Kitchen is not listed. That's a dominant team.

Also, Tulsa holds the consecutive unbeaten at home record at 39 in a row, Akron currently stands at 29. With five more home games, if the season breaks right, there would be two home games in the MAC tournament and three in the NCAA tournament (all of those would count if they are at home), so the Zips could tie the record this year. Of course I'd trade everything that could happen this year to be :NCAAC:

That cannot be right. We beat them at Tulsa just last year!

Edit: Ah, overall, not current... my bad! Something to shoot for!

Look who slid into the number two spot.

Akron soccer dominates.

Oh, its Louisville and former Akron HC Ken Lolla.

I was just going to point that out.

For those of us who knew and liked Ken Lolla, it's nice to see him succeed at his goal of bringing LU into the upper echelon of college soccer. However, Chief has not recruited to continue in the lofty position. I hope he gets some help, perhaps from his successor, as UA and UL could be a great rivalry in the future. I hear through the coconut wireless that the two are the best of friends, too. Ken has a couple of Mario Sanchez' ex-UNLV players, including local boy from the isles, Brock Granger. Would love to see the two teams meet up in the post season. It could be in December (meaning the Final Four).
