GoZips Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Ever since I was a small child back in the days of leather helmets and no face guard I have loved football. The sandlot pick up games with the neighborhood kids; the CYO years where I first worked up a grimy sweat on through high school and college; I have always loved football. This season the Zips grieve me something awful. Deep down in the core of me is the understanding that football is not a game for the weak. It is a game for those with stout hearts. Its not about size, speed or strength. It is about guts. Guts that start in the heart. More than anything else the 2010 Zips have no heart. This grieves my spirit. How do we mend a team with no heart? Who is to blame? Yesterday I wrote that icoach had all the passion of a kumquat. Do we blame icoach? In the movie Remember The Titans there is a scene between Julius and Gary where Julius says, "Attitude reflects leadership". Who's attitude sets the tone for the Zips? Quote
Zipmeister Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Other teams are to blame because they recruit and sign bigger, faster, stronger players. Quote
Lee Adams Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Time for Ianello to sit down with the seniors who start or get significant playing time. Time to tell them the sophs/freshman will be starting and getting the bulk of the playing time the rest of the way. The team is playing for the future the rest of this season. The Can't game is over. The play has not significantly improved. Get a jump on next year. Quote

The seniors have earned the right to play. Sitting AA, or Ward, or Thomas or whomever would leave a huge vacuum in leadership and ability. Quote
Big Zip Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 I don't care if we lose by 1 or 50 it is still a loss. I see no point in playing guys who are playing like they don't want to be here or want to win. Oh if losing only meant we only got a high draft pick! Quote

I don't see any lack of effort on any player's part. I see lack of depth, ability, scheme, results etc. But no lack of effort. Everyone is playing like they want to win. Quote

To be honest I dont see that too much either, but there are times when it seems like we dont hustle down on coverage for punts or kickoffs though. Maybe it's just me. Quote

Then why don't you start hustling and leave the rest of the team alone? Quote
GP1 Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Oh if losing only meant we only got a high draft pick! Then we could change our name to The University of Akron Browns. Quote

Yep it might get worse than having NIU hang 'half a hundred' on em. It might get worse than losing to Gardner-Webb etc. I am not saying Alex Allen or some of those other upper classmen are not playing hard. Right now the results are not there and the longer term benefit to the program has to be considered. I have seen people on this site criticize a previous coach for staying with the seniors or starters too long. Not an easy decision but sometimes coaches have to earn their money. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Most of the seniors are playing a huge leadership role. They are the ones working the hardest. I understand that the sophomores and juniors are the ones with an attitude problem. If leaders don't step up in those classes and get the rest in line, you'll see even worse football next season.
