Did anyone else notice the contract attached to the interview? Most especially this language: Assuming that you are amendable, please indicate your acceptance by signing below.

Well, if that was written by Dr Proenza, he can at least claim that English is not his first language. :P

My guess is that at least half the guys on this board won't have a clue about your point. They just aren't prospective enough to notice.

You know who I feel the worst for? (dangling preposition intentional :)). Anyone who is soccer fan who roots for a team other than Akron in the MAC. Man, thats got to be depressing looking at another ten years of this.

IMO the University best be laying plans for moving to a new conference for soccer as the MAC may well

fold the tent with the prospect of ten more years of Zips domination.

Maybe those ACC fans are a lot closer to the truth than we thought last Fall.

I always thought about how tough it must be to be a player or coach of another MAC men's soccer team. No matter how hard they work they to be the best with what they are given, we are kind of an anomaly in the MAC and it is unrealistic to knock us off. I almost feel bad for them, almost. I also wonder if this would in some way hurt recruiting to those other schools. Like, if players get offers from other mid-majors where they wouldn't have to struggle trying to beat the best team in the nation, maybe they would chose that school instead.

I think our presence might help. We won the national championship as a MAC school. By that alone, the MAC can be regarded as a solid soccer conference. The other schools will get to play us every year, and at home every other. We've also shown that for a relatively cheap (compared to football and basketball) investment, MAC schools can compete at the top of this sport against the big names and get national recognition for it.

Agreed! And Cleveland State would have had a tough job getting second in the MAC in 2010 -- so that shows beating Akron (once at least!) isn't impossible. Looking back, I wonder how that loss effected the team. Probably had very little if any effect on their confidence -- just tighten the waistband and move on -- the goal was still weeks away.

Miami has done the same in hockey, regularly beating the bigger name schools, getting ranked #1, getting into the final four and coming close to a national championship. They also have a great coach who's happy coaching at a small Ohio school. Even though the MAC isn't a hockey conference, it would still be nice if a MAC school could win the hockey national championship. Miami is currently rated #6 in the hockey standings, ahead of Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc.

Since we're talking about another secondary sport like hockey, it brings up an interesting thought.

I'm a huge college sports fan, and have been for all of the nearly 50 years I've been on this planet. Or, at least as long as I can remember. However, I don't believe I've ever watched a college hockey game. And I do like the sport. I do know they have a championship, but I've never seen that either. Do they televise any of the games? I do have some familiarity with some of the best teams, at least in the sense that they come from places like New England, Minnesota and Michigan, but mostly from having an interest in the 1980 Olympic hockey team, which featured players from schools in those areas. But, I don't think I could pinpoint one specifically. There's certainly no way I can tell you which schools won any recent championships, and couldn't name a single players on any team. I also have some knowledge of Miami and BG being competitive at times on the national stage over the years.

With this being my limited knowledge of college hockey, can I really expect even the more avid of college sports fans to take notice of our soccer championship? Is that even realistic? Nearly everyone I've talked to over the last couple of weeks claims to have no idea what just happened here, and it's frustrating to me.

For our benefit, I sure hope that college soccer is a lot bigger draw than college hockey. But, I simply have no idea.

College Soccer is bigger in the sense that there are far more teams, i can tell you that. Attendance wise, I'm not 100% sure but I have to think Ice Hockey outdraws Soccer easily. I do know that OSU has the largest Arena (Value City, 17,500) but it's not specifically made for hockey and never comes close to full (been to a game that had less people than an Akron Club Hockey match). Though perhaps my fav. arena in college sports is Ralph Englestad Arena in North Dakota. The place is a palace and a good example of how big hockey is in some areas. I also love how the person who funded it said he would stop the funding if the school ever changed their name from the "Fighting Sioux". To make sure they didn't, the arena has the logo engraved in every seat, in marble in various places, and on every possible surface. It's great.

But if you look at a few areas (Michigan, New England, Minnesota, etc.) you see how big Hockey is.

Soccer has the potential to be bigger though.

If this were to happen, Mock Draft (Zips projected as 6 of top 10 picks), Akron would certainly gain more attention.

Soccer will never break the hockey attendance record set by Michigan this year. They had 110k in attendance for an outdoor game at the Big House. That might be more at one game than all of NCAA soccer combined for the entire season.

Not sure about college, but I know back in the mid-90's, the best high school team was the junior varsity squad at the fictional Eden Hall Academy. They were led by captain Charley Conway and formerly coached by Gordan Bombay, who despite being a lawyer could have made it in the pros if not for a career ending knee injury.

hope someone gets this :D

The Frozen Four is televised on ESPN every year. College hockey holds the attendance record for the biggest crowd in ANY college sport. 113,411 k

For anybody looking to to learn a little about hockey, or if you are just a sports fan, do yourself a favor and watch HBO's 24/7 series on The Winter Classic. There are two episodes out right now and they are repeating them all the time. I think you might be able to watch the first episode on HBO's website if you have a fast internet connection. I'll predict right now that this series will win some kind of award. It's AWESOME. Even better than Hard Knocks. Funny how Rex got some heat for cursing, you have GOT to hear the Caps coach curse. I just read in today's PG that tickets to the winter classic are now going for $439. If anybody wants to buy Dr Z a late xmas present, I would love to attend. :D

Want to set attendance records at the Info next season Dr P? Call HBO right now and do anything you can to get them to do a series on Zips football.
