LZIp
I guess I dont understand why all the hate for the "Suckeyes" or "OSUcks" on here. I grew up a Buckeye fan, as I'm sure most of you grew up some major football program fan, whether it be OSU, Michigan, Texas, etc., unless you had strong family ties to the University or something. But now I go to the University of Akron and am proud to say I do. Like it or not, there is only room for one Ohio State in Ohio. No other in state university will probably be able to match what they do academically or athletically overall. How I root for them against each other head to head is by expectations. I will not root for Akron to ruin OSU's national championship hopes in football week 1 of the 2011 season. Just like I rooted for #1 Akron to beat OSU in soccer this past season. Hypothetically, if Akron played OSU in basketball later this season and it was potentially for OSU to earn the #1 overall seed and for Akron just to make the tournament, I'd root for Akron, because it would be a good experience for UA and OSU would still be in the tourney. I dont know whether or not that makes me a bandwagon fan or something..but I grew up and always will be an OSU fan, but does that not mean I can't root for the University I attend and love as well? It also doesn't bother me that people wear OSU stuff around campus (i do sometimes myself), but it does bother me when someone where's an OSU hoody to a football game or something. It REALLY bothers me when students are wearing other MAC apparel around campus because those teams are our rivals. I don't know..maybe I am off base..but I just don't see the need to bash OSU so much..especially since we really aren't on the same level as them overall like it or not. RootforRoo44
If you cant root for Akron over OSU in ALL SITUATIONS then you are going to have some hatred thrown at you on here. I can guarantee you that. That being said I hope the Zips upset the NOTC's next year in the opening game.

You're a Zips fan but you want us to lose our game in Cowlumbus next September? Like I say all the time, we compete against that school down south for students, athletes, faculty, and media attention. I'm a Zips fan. When OSWho fails, and it affects their ability to recruit against us for students, athletes, and faculty, and diminishes their media attention, that's a good thing for the Zips. And I want as many good things to happen for the Zips as possible.
zipseuph
I agree that people on here can go to far from time to time. I'd root for Akron over OSU any day of the week, I hate it when people wear OSU gear on campus/to games, I hate it when I can't go to a bar and I can't find a single place that isn't showing the Akron game, but I think too much is made of it on this bored. Dave in Green
Please let it go. Personally, I think it would be good to have an appropriately named thread for this subject if only the discussion could be confined to this thread and not spill over into other threads specifically about the Zips. Of course, this thread and all others like it really belong in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes and not in Akron Zips Football, because it's off topic about Akron Zips football. This subject is equivalent to trying to discuss politics or religion. People have their own beliefs, they don't really want to hear what the other side has to say, and they will argue emotionally and endlessly if someone else dares challenge their beliefs. Please, can we keep the Akron Zips Football forum exclusively about Akron Zips football?

Dig through the Off Topic section of this forum and you'll find all the explanations you'll need on why we love to hate Columbus's state college. Akron will never be another Boise/TCU if it can't compete for recruits against OSU. It wouldn't hurt Akron's recruiting if OSU had a few bad years. We could look at Central Michigan and Michigan State to see if Michigan's downfall has helped with their recruiting.

They recruit more on a national scale. If they had some bad seasons that would help the likes of Penn State, Michigan, Florida, Texas. akzipper
I just don't see how people can root for a school they have no connection to. I'd say 99% of Suckeyes fans have never attended a class there and just root for them because they are good. What does that make them? a bandwagon fan. Most are annoying and loud mouths, who wear their stupid red and grey crap around campus laughing at people who root for Akron. Oh well we brought home a National Championship this year, and OSwho has not.
ksu sucks
No other in state university will probably be able to match what they do academically... Eh, I don't buy that, LZip. Case Western, Miami, Kenyon, etc are more prestigious universities than OSU. They just have different missions than the mothership. Up until ten years ago or so, OSU didn't have very competitive admissions at all. Around that time, it was common knowledge that anyone who went to my old high school with a sub par GPA or better was a shoe-in at OSU. Of course, things have changed, but just about every school in Ohio has it's strong points. And I agree, some members of this board can be childish about OSU. I just think OSU has probably the best overall university akzipper- I dont know..I could be wrong but I've never seen people around campus saying Akron sucks or anything like that. I think a lot of people root for them because they are an in-state team. Just like I root for the Bengals, Reds, and Cavs professionally. I do have a cousin who played for OSU who is currently in the pros (hartline). So I guess I do have a connection. But I dont think because you dont have a connection to a team, you cant root for them. Does that mean if you are from NE Ohio, you cant root for any professional team not from cleveland? Im curious to know who a lot of you rooted for while you were growing up. I honestly dont think it would be akron unless you had some sort of strong family connection to the university. Im from the ohio valley where the closest big city is pittsburgh(who i hate in all sports), so i dont really understand.

It is a school, I don't go around calling myself a St. V's or Hoban fan just because they are good or because I live in Akron. I'm a fan of my High School. Growing up I would root for several colleges, never OSU. But I based it on which schools I wanted to attend when I got older. Now being a part of UA, I am a Zips fan. That's where I got my education and the place I can call "my school." OSU fans like to claim it as their school even if they didn't go there, which is annoying. Their excuse is "I've been a fan since I was a kid", well okay but once you attend a college such as Akron, OU, BG, Toledo, or even Can't, you should stand behind your school. I get sick and tired of hearing all this "Akron's not real college sports" crap from people in Ohio, even UA students. I don't need to be sitting in my dorm listening to idiots screaming after OSU beat the Zips a few years back. Thankfully we brought home a National Championship this year, which hopefully won't happen in Columbus any time soon. So we have bragging rights even if it is "just soccer." My problem with OSU is not their students or alums....but bandwagon fans and UA students rooting for OSU.

And all of this undermines UA's stature and potential. How do we expect to be nationally and internationally recognized and branded if we can't even distinguish ourselves in our own back yard with our own alumni?
