Quickzips Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 More of the 1-3-1 zone please. More of Diggs taking on the defensive assignment on our opponents best perimeter player please. More pushing the tempo in transition please. More establishing Zeke early in the game and going to him throughout please. More good shooting nights like that from McNees please. More Roberts, McClanahan, Diggs and Abreu attacking the basket and not settling for so many long jumpers please. I know it wasn't against the greatest opponent, and it wasn't exactly a clinic that the Zips put on out there, but there were definitly some bright spots to build on out there. Quote

They established him as an offensive threat early and went back to him at key moments throughout the game. He isn't a guy you can force feed the ball every trip down the floor right now. Defenses get wise to that and start throwing 2 and 3 defenders at him from all angles as soon as he gets the entry pass, often resulting in a turnover. He'll get to the point where you can do that with him, but for now, I like using him the way we did tonight. Quote

I know I said that I was going to take a break from watching them, but I couldn't stay away. The highlights of the game for me were Zeke and Diggs. Hopefully Diggs starts to see more playing time now. Also, it was nice to see McNees play a good game. I'm really rooting for him to start playing better because, from what I've heard, he's been spending extra time working out on his own, which is good to hear. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 I was surprised to Egner come out and play a little in the first half. He made a mistake and was pulled quickly, but at least he saw a moment of "real" action and got a rebound. Expect to see more of him as we get into the softer part of the MAC schedule. Quote
Dave in Green Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 What I really liked tonight was Zeke's attitude. He wasn't constantly beating himself up for the slightest mistake. He just moved on, stayed focused, and had a nice overall game. Big props to the Zips defense for holding Trey Ziegler to 4-19 from the field. I think that's the first quality shooting guard who hasn't gone off against the Zips all season. Ziegler looked like he has a lot of potential to tear up the MAC, but just couldn't get it going tonight. The Serb (10 rebounds) and Bardo (6) did a nice job of controlling the boards. B. McKnight remains in his shooting funk, but at least tonight he didn't keep shooting and instead let others take over. Overall I thought the Zips passing generally looked crisper and better executed. There were only a few possessions in the final 10 minutes when the Zips seemed to go into prevent mode to protect their lead that they started screwing up and allowing CMU to get back into it. But then they became aggressive again, scored some quality baskets, and put the game away. The Zips are a better overall team when they remain consistently aggressive. No Zips player had a real stinky game, which one would certainly hope would be the case against a weaker team like CMU. Now I'd like to see the Zips look as good as they did tonight against the stronger MAC teams. Quote
GoZips Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 More real defense, please. This "hands in the pockets" defense flat out SUX. I did like the 1-1-3 (as KD calls it). The down side is that a good trey shooter would feast on that defense. Quote
skip-zip Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 I'll address a couple of these comments: Transition Baskets: As KD points out all the time, transition basket opportunities come from getting defensive stops. The last time I looked, we're giving up more points per game than we've given up at anytime during his tenure. This alone can limit your opportunities for transition baskets dramatically. Zeke: Some of you thought you saw a breakout during the Ken+ game. Only time was going to show if that was true. I think it's still a game by game kind of thing. Some nights, he appears to be more aggressive. Other nights...tentative. Some nights, we can't even get the ball to him without it getting continually slapped away. I hope it ends soon. But, for now I'd expect to see more of the back and forth between 4 point games and 15 point games depending on the matchups, and how teams decide to defend us with him on the floor. Quote
RootforRoo44 Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 MORE Mike Bardo! (1 point, 6 rebounds) MORE Josh Egner MORE shots by Zeke LESS Quincy Diggs turning the ball over. LESS turnovers in general. LESS of that asinine defense that leaves 3-point shooters open every possession. Quote
Dave in Green Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Fast break specialists can be a mixed bag on scoring vs. turnovers. On the one hand, Q has shown the ability to grab the ball on the defensive end, motor quickly up court, and either finish at the hoop himself or feed another Zips player motoring along with him. This is something the Zips have lacked, and is a positive development that will result in more fast break points. The downside is that when Q tries to weave his way through traffic, he's vulnerable to a quick defender coming up from behind and picking his pocket. He takes big, long strides with big, long dribbles. This is a plus when there aren't multiple defenders to slow him down a little, as he has the ability to break down a single defender in front of him without losing speed. It's not so good when he's delayed enough that a player can catch him from behind. Overall I hope Q continues to do exactly what he's doing, with the addition that he develops that little alarm bell in the back of his head that goes off when he gets into a situation where a defender is likely to be sneaking up on him from behind. I loved seeing Q get out on the fast break last night. How long has it been since we've had a guard/wing that is always looking to get out and run before the defense has a chance to set up? Quote

LESS turnovers in general. LESS of that asinine defense that leaves 3-point shooters open every possession. Captain Kangaroo Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 I think the best thing to come out of last night's game was the win. After that, it was the Coach showing the fans that he's willing to make changes to improve his chances of winning. Historically, Coach K has been VERY loyal to many of his upper-class players. Last night, for the first time this season, we saw McKnight cruising towards a 2-9 performance....when KD put on the brakes and sat him down. He inserted Digs...who made some mistakes...but brought a ton of energy, rebounding and hall-hawking to the fold. Diggs was allowed to make some mistakes and remain on the floor. And he didn't disappoint. Diggs has a long dribble that's ripe to be picked, but he'll figure it out if he's allowed to continue playing. And I think he will be. I liked PT for Roberts. He's taking care of the ball better than Abreu, DEFENDING BETTER and shooting it better too. I think a reduced role for Abreu is probably welcomed by Alex himself at this point in time. He seemed to be a little more at ease when the bulk of the load wasn't on his shoulders. We all wanted Egner to get some minutes, and he finally got a couple. I hope he continues to see the floor. He can't score like McKnight, but he can rebound and defend. And at this time, we need rebounders and defenders in the low post more than we need offense. McNees gets the weekly "Jawanza Moore Onslaught of Missed Lay ups Award." One guy that won't get it this year is Darryl Roberts. He's close to "money" when he's near the hoop. Bardo was outstanding last night. He played like the bad-ass bruiser we needed him to be. I'd keep giving him minutes. Zeke had a nice game offensively. And altered a bunch of shots. But somehow he needs more rebounds. Getting one against that Side Show Bob impersonator was too few. Still - nice game by the big guy. CMU seems to be a total train wreck right now. it reminds me of the Hipsher era, in the ensuing days after the Andrick fight. They even have a Savior Coach's son?! Elton Alexander (today's PD) took the angle that Zips fans should not clamor for increased PT for our Freshman, because that's what CMU's doing...and it ain't working. I disagree. CMU is a horrible team with a volatile coach and a lot of internal issues. They didn't lose because they were playing a bunch of Freshman...they lost because they are a terrible basketball program. Nice game by Nik last night. He missed his requisite couple bunnies, but otherwise played with a lot of energy and got results. Can't get too high after holding such a crappy team to around 40 points...but I can't complain about a nice win last night either. Good coaching, and good play on the court for the Zippers. Quote

Dave in Green Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Sometimes you can think your way out of making a free throw. I always wondered if some players might be better off trying a quick turnaround jumpshot on their free throws. Bardo did the next best thing by shooting the instant he received the ball from the ref. Whatever works is good. Quote
