OK, so you people aren't more excited about this? This should be the #1 thread on this board.

Imagine if the baseball team was playing the Yankees, Red Sox, and Orioles this spring break. That's what this is like.

Or the basketball team had an exhibition schedule of the Lakers, Clippers, and Bulls.

This is CRAZY news.

I keep searching all over the internet to actually find a schedule that reads "Real Madrid (reserves) vs Akron Zips" March xx, 2011.

I'm with you Root. Sorry I hadn't posted I'm just so shocked I don't really know what to say.

Think about the recruiting bonus this is? "Hey, wanna come to Akron? We'll go over to Spain and play the reserves of the top teams in the freaking WORLD!" I love Caleb Porter. That's all I can say.

To be fair, this is more like playing against Ramiro Pena, Brett Gardner and Alfredo Aceves (Yankees bench players) but regardless it's still pretty cool. How Caleb Porter cotinues to pull this stuff off amazes me.

Well it's a little early i think but i emailed the coach about it:

Here's what he said:

Yes we are going on a spring break trip with the team to Madrid Spain. Yes we are also playing the “RESERVE” teams of [Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid, and Getafe].

So definitely good to get a confirmation from someone with the team. This is really exciting.

Btw Meatwad, no big deal that you didn't post about it. Most wouldn't have believed it lol

I’ll echo the “this is truly remarkable” sentiment already established in this thread :thumb:

Remember when Caleb signed his most recent contract extension and there was some verbiage in there about having X amount of money for program development (my words, but it was something to that effect)? I’m thinking this trip falls under this category. As is typically the case with Coach Porter, this is money WELL spent!

It will be a great experience for the players as a team. Although its the reserves, its great for Akron recruiting. When you hear the name Real Madrid, you think of all the Championships, but all they do is buy players like the Yankees, so do they really have much of a reserve team. lol

Its really great news for Zips Soccer! Reserves or not, lets hope the players learn some skills and tactics from the Spanish.

If it is spring break .. anyone with the means should really consider taking this trip. I say from experience that Madrid is a phenomenal place to visit, eat, drink .. and otherwise exist.

I'd move there in a heartbeat, and I speak next to no Spanish.

3 or 4 nights in the Mesons would make for a GREAT spring break.

Go Zips!

I will echo the sentiment that this is AWESOME! I could barely contain myself when I first heard it from my source (which is reliable), but many thanks for the confirmation.

Real Madrid's reserves get to play against one of the best soccer teams in the world day in and day out. It will be a great test for our Zips. Anyone else think that we are going to Spain since no MLS team will play us since we almost beat the Crew a few years ago? I do.

I think this is punishment for all the guys who left early. No Spain for you! This will teach them to go pro when they're ready and not hang around for another year. (No tongue in cheek icon).

I don't believe the reserve teams practice with the First Team. In most leagues, the reserve teams only practice with the first squad leading up to the beginning of the season. La Liga is set up differently, unlike the English Premier League. Real Madrid has reserve teams playing in the lower divisions and they can move up and down the table just like in any other league in Europe. But the reserve team cannot move up into a division where it already occupies a spot.

Real Madrid's Reserve teams. One of them is in the third tier Segundo B Division with 80 teams set up in 4 different groups and the other is in the fourth tier Tercara Division with 360 teams divided into 18 different regional groups.

Yes, I heard about this trip from the Above Named zip_me87. However I was, unlike most, not surprised. ;) How can the work of Caleb Porter surprise anyone anymore? I'm just hoping for the sake of American soccer, that there is no training session with the Real starters -- Gente, PLEASE don't bring home any flopping skills learned at the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo! :D

BTW -- I will be the first to sign up for the trip to the Basque Country, as soon as Caleb skeds Athletic Bilbao and Real Socieded. Eupa! :P

BTW(2) -- Nice look on the blog Mike. Love the La Liga logo! World's best futbol!

According to the attached pdf of the Fall 2002 Alumni Magazine (blue box on page 27), a Men's Soccer trip to Spain occurred in August 2003. I admit that I had lost touch with Zips sports when I lived out of state and didn't start following again until 2005. Does anyone remember the referenced trip occurring (when Lolla was HC)?

EDIT: attachment failed; try this link: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=...6dg&cad=rja

I've been trying to find our full spring schedule, but it's not out yet.

So far, we know about the Spain trip. Xavier announced their schedule and they are playing at Akron on April 16th at 1 PM. We're also playing Notre Dame, but the date is unknown.

Porter talked about playing home against Cleveland State at the American Outlaws' USA/Chile watch party a few weeks ago. Also, Maryland at home too i've heard.
