2012 Recruiting

Recommended Posts

Is the coaching staff recruiting QB TJ Eckert? He has Akron as a school interested in him. He's an under the radar prospect, but has been lighting it up in the high school scene. You can check out his highlights below, 2nd from top and see if he's worth a shot at becoming a Zip.

TJ Eckert

I don't know. A QB has already committed to us for the class of 2012 and he said the coaches told him he would the the only one in that recruiting class.

The problem I have is, no matter how good these players are why would they want to play in Akron. I can't see a guy putting on an Akron hat in front of the press saying "I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to win 4 games during my 4 year career with the Zips"

I actually know a football player from western PA. Very talented and had looks from ACC and Big East schools. Said he considered Akron, but his response was something along the lines of...Stadium and facilities were awesome, but they are just too bad. Disappointing, but that right there sums up what High School athletes think of our program.

I'd say what they look for in general are:

Winning

Tradition

Stadium

Uniforms

Now I know the forth one may be surprising, but I doubt it's a coincidence that Oregon gets so many talented players. It's obviously something that get's a school noticed.

Out of those 4 criteria, I say all we have going for us is the stadium....

So based on that, Maryland should be kicking butt in recruiting the Class of 2012. I'm not so sure it isn't just the attention that comes to a WINNING team. Nike and UofO make a nice combo.

Any player who is willing to admit that they would base their program selection, even a little bit, based on uniforms should be dropped from consideration at once.

Luckily that doesn't seem to be an issue with the current recruiting class (all 3 or 4 of them).

And you would be losing a lot of players interest.

This isnt 1965, players care what they look like on the field. Whether you like that or not doesn't matter, that is the reality. Dont kid yourself one bit, that is a very big deal to players.

I agree that it is not 1965.

This thread seems dedicated to telling me everyone who hasn't committed to Akron. If we offered and they don't accept -- why do i care? Should an 2012 Recruiting in the Akron Football Recruiting area be dedicated to us?

It only seems that way because there have been so few players who have commited to UA so far. This was my big concern with getting off to another slow start this year.

I started this with the intent of tracking Akron's offers and commitments. We weren't really getting any commitments, so I decided to also track who our offers were choosing over us, and to see who we are attempting to recruit against.

Ianello seems to always shoot for the sky early, then progressively offer lower and lower rated recruits when the top ones don't work out. The problem with this approach is that by the time you get to the recruits that would help us at least compete in the MAC, other MAC schools have had months to develop relationships because they didn't spend 70% of their recruiting budgets chasing players with 20 BCS offers. So then we end up with players with no offers that we hope-to-God were just overlooked by every single other D-I school, and weren't offerless for some other, more harmful reason.

That's how it played out last year, and it's how things are playing out this year too.

I'll be sure to report any verbals that the Zips get, though. Assuming we ever get one.

Since we have a coach with a reputation as a great recruiter, the verbals should start pouring in at any second.

This is an interesting little article about Akron's lack of recruiting in Stark county, one of the better football counties in the state. Coach Whiting from Northwest (my alma mater) makes a pretty good point.http://fridaynightohio.com/news/sunday-spe...d-recruit-stark
There's a lot of truth in this article. If the locals feel we are not giving them a fair shot we will continue to lose talent and fans. I feel very few sports fans in Stark county identify with Akron because we have not developed relationships in that market. There are many kids who want to stay home and play for their local university. Unfortunately we have not made them feel that they we are there local university. They don't feel connected. If they can help raise our talent level we have to find a way to let them know they are welcomed at Akron.I don't see this changing until we have a change in coaching leadership and I am someone who wants Ianello to succeed. Realistically I now feel he doesn't have the ability.
