K92
June Jones. Wow, I would like to see a Zips offense with June at the helm. Saturdays would be very entertaining at the Info.

Any news? From what little I can gather, we were much improved. I didn't find a score.Just have to wait for camp to start. While coaches aren't allowed to observe, they do hear what happened. Zipgrad01
Another preview of the Zips.We lost so much on offense. We lost people, but did we really? Alex Allen (post hip injury) and Nate Burney were sub-par D1 talents. I would take all three of our current tailbacks (especially Chisholm) over either Burney or Allen. I don't care about experience for a tailback, it is meaningless. Freshman running backs thrive all the time. What did we really lose at receiver? Jeremy LaFrance was decent, but small. Jalil Carter was a db playing out of position. He only caught 30 balls and most of them were late in the season. We replace them with more talented guys. Antoine Russell, Keith Sconiers, AJ Price and Marquelo Suel is a much better group than last years. Our TE position is in better shape this year. Our qb position now has 3 options instead of one. Throw Tyler Williams in the mix as a wr, rb, kr and pr and the offense gets even more explosive.People are expecting the worst from Akron's offense because they have no clue that the players that are stepping in are much more talented than the group that left. Not only that, these guys are now in their 2nd year of the offense.
ZachTheZip
If Chisholm is so great, why didn't he play last year instead of redshirting? Lord knows we could have used someone like what some Zips fans are proclaiming him to be. Same goes with Suel at WR.

ZachTheZip
Because last year was a write off.Only in retrospect. Most of the Zips fans here were expecting improvement when Ianello took over. We had a promising QB returning in Nicely, two productive senior RBs in Allen and Burney, a solid OL, an all-MAC WR in LaFrance, two great D-linemen in Sewell and Lemon, and Wagner at LB. We were set to have a strong year after injuries caused Brookhart's last year to go south.Nobody expected that Ianello take what looked to be a 5 or 6 win season and simply say "screw it, winning games isn't as important as installing my system."Considering how many senior playmakers we had, Ianello could have designed a two-year transition instead of pulling a U-turn at 90mph. That would have given us a chance to win a few games while bringing up the underclassmen in the system he wanted to eventually have in place. Then this year would be the year Ianello could prove that he is the guy and that his way is the way to build a strong football program, instead of pushing it back to year 3 or 4 like it looks now. Looks like last year was a write off to me. We all argued about it last year. Redshirting Chisholm doesn't bother me any. He would have gotten little playing time with 2 seniors. Suel probably makes a little less sense. He would probably gotten some playing time...at least while Jalil Carter was awol for a couple of games there. But whatever. Redshirting those 2 guys makes a lot more sense than burning Dylan Potts' for 2 snaps.

It doesn't take two years of transition then more "building" on top of that to win in the mac.

Dr Z
Here is another Bleacher Report article with more details, also written by Jack "The Love Boat" Jones (no relation to June). Three more starters return in the secondary, as the Zips welcome back the starting corner duo of junior Manley Waller and sophomore Anthony Holmes, along with junior free safety Josh Richmond. Added to the mix will be redshirt freshman strong safety L.T. Smith. This was a very inexperienced bunch in 2010, so there’s a good chance they make some big strides in 2011. If they make "big strides" this year, I'll be real excited about this year on that side of the ball. I am pretty confident the front 7 can get things done. We need our secondary to step up. The secondary and the offensive line are my biggest concerns (placekicking can't get much worse, right?). Browning seems to have a lot of respect among the coaching establishment, so I'm hoping that in his second year with a lot of these same guys we'll see improvement here. I know a lot of publications and fans are pointing to the lack of proven commodities at the skill positions, but I really think we're in much better shape there than people realize. Suel and Price will both be very good IMHO and either Sconiers or Russell will take it up a notch. Meriwether should have a definite role as well. It sounds like Richard Hall is still with the team, so he has a real shot to be a weapon at TE. There is depth there as well. And you know how I feel about #44. He won't do it alone, but he'll pull more than his fair share. So I agree 100%. A decent year out of the secondary (with an assist from what could be a good pass rush) will go a LONG way towards turning things around here. K92
If the secondary makes big strides this year it will be quite ironic since our former defensive coordinator's claim to fame was coaching the db's and what he left for Michigan to do. I know he wasn't the position coach here but, just sayin.

I know he wasn't the position coach here but, just sayin. This fall will mark the 25th anniversary of my freshman year when I watched my first Zips game. Even though I am fully aware of our D-IA history, and how I have been excited and let down before, I can't help it. I am getting pumped up again. I want to believe Ianello knows what he is doing, even if the evidence up to this point may say otherwise. I find myself buying into what Rob's selling in this little fireside chat. Am I crazy? Or just a ZIP?

Lord knows we could have used someone like what some Zips fans are proclaiming him to be. Same goes with Suel at WR. Chisolm was a late addition to the class. Didnt he show up one day before camp? They had 2 seniors and Georgio Bowers. It doesn't surprise me a bit. Ianello explained the Suel decision. He felt he was ready mid season and it wasnt worth it to blow Suels redshirt with how the team was doing. He wasnt a true freshman. His eligibility is much shorter. It would have been stupid. skip-zip
You will want to read this preview for a chuckle. pigskin press I'm expecting people to look at our record last year, and the personnel shortages, and predicting a dismal season. Here's my question: For us fans, if we win 2 or 3 games, do we rave about how much we are "improving"? Are you a better or worse team because you won a couple more or a couple fewer games than the year before? Would it take maybe 4-5 wins to get some people feeling even remotely optimistic again? And would those numbers even have any impact at all on anyone other than the die hard fans? I'm just thinking that for most people, it's going to take significant improvement over the next couple of years before most people show any belief in this program and its coach. I'm still laughing hysterically at their prediction that Ken+ will rise to the top of the standings. I'll believe it when I see it. And if they do pull a miracle like that, I am going to be even more frustrated over our selection for a head coach. But just the fact that anyone is seeing some promise at Ken+ tells me something. I grow much more impatient with all of the "just give it some time" crap when I see others making decisions that prompt the so-called "experts" to believe that they could possibly transition to a winner much quicker. Buckzip
Being competitive will be a huge improvement. Last season not only did we lose all but 1 game, but we were blown out multiple times by MAC teams. WIns some games and be competitive in most of the rest and I consider that improvement. Dr Z
Here's my question: For us fans, if we win 2 or 3 games, do we rave about how much we are "improving"?Depends what I see on the field. Are we moving the ball? Putting drives together? Production from our passing game when we need it? Converting FGs? Receiving the kick off once a game? Getting pressure on the QB? Rob keeps preaching how the team needs to do the "fundamentals", I hope he steps up his game time coaching ability as well. I'm surprised French didn't ask him about that during his interview with him this week. I understand Steve knows where his bread is buttered, but even a softball like, "coach, do you think a years experience on the field as a HC will help you make better decisions during the games this year?"
