Hilltopper Posted June 18, 2011 Report Posted June 18, 2011 Doug Martin sure knows how to pick jobs. SI thinks he is a coach on The Worst Team in College Football. For one team, the adage "nowhere to go but up" will ring especially true. New New Mexico coordinator Doug Martin, who had been coach at Can't State, has a lot of work to do. Quote

The Aggies have been abysmal on offense of late and haven't really been effective throwing the ball since Hal Mumme was fired as coach. GP1 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 No wonder they are so bad. Their players play with their britches half way down. Makes it very difficult to run. Quote

Zipmeister Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 We should definitely be scheduling a home and home series with this guys. Lock it up for at least 6 years. Quote

He's actually a Lobo, but it's a funny story nonetheless How many people recall the old Zippers whipping BOTH the Aggies (in the Rubber Bowl) AND the Lobos (AT Albuquerque to boot!) in the Faustian days? Wow, this brings back memories. I attended both games. The Zips ripped the Aggies a new one in the Rubber Bowl. 55-8 if my memory serves me. It was a bit tougher out in Albuquerque. The Zips lead most of the game only to fall behind in the last minute. A Lobos fan sitting near us moaned that the Lobos would find a way to lose. And, lose they did. Akron drove the length of the field to kick a game winning field goal with bare seconds to play. We, my family, made the New Mex game part of our vacation that year spending two weeks driving all around the four corners region. Great scenery. New Mexico literally did not believe in road signs so navigating was a challenge. Quote
Lee Adams Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Walker is the coach at New Mexico State in Las Cruces? Locksley is the coach at New Mexico in ABQ. So the picture shows Walker, refers to UNM not NMSTU. So is Martin at State or UNM? By the way we vacation in New Mexico regularly. Great place with the Balloon Festival, high desert and all. And they do have road signs these days. Quote

Since I have visited twice, and will much more, since the Futbol Zips were @ the Lobos Tourney in 2008, I can vouch for what GoZips had to say. There isn't even a sign on the freeway pointing towards Santa Fe when you need to turn -- I ended up halfway to Las Vegas (New Mexico!) I wanted to write a letter to the newspaper suggesting the state visitors' motto be "Come to New Mexico and Get Lost". But, once I arrived in "El Norte", I finally understood why they want El Gringo to keep out. BTW -- Dougie's team opens their schedule at home vs the BobKittens. They'll likely get wiped, regardless of the inside info. And, I got free donuts off that (1987?) UNM victory courtesy of my boss, a Lobo alum. Quote

I thought where it said on the link that the Youngstown game was held in Akron meant that it was held in Akron. Now I see that your "1988" link leads to the 1985 schedule. Quote

Wide open spaces will do that. Should have kept going south. I have an in-law in Carlsbad who could have given you directions. You weren't on TWA 260 were you? No that would be impossible. Quote

skip-zip Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 Since we've been talking so much about coaches lately, I'll say something again that I've mentioned in other threads. I don't think it's a coincidence that coaches end up where they end up. The college coaching fraternity is a tight one. The good ones get plenty of opportunities to move forward. Others seem to move backwards and never return. And in this case, it seems like a good fit. Quote
ZipRoo Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 I know people here like to knock and mock Doug Martin, but he's Knute Rockne and Vince Lombardi in comparison to what the Zips have endured the past five years. Not only did he tutor Josh Cribbs and Julian Edelman, he had the 25th best passing offense last season for perennial loser NMS. Shoot, I would've taken him in a split-second over deposed QB "guru" Ron Powlus, whose two years produced some of the most inept, embarrassing quarterback play ever seen in allegedly-Division 1 college football. Once again, thanks so much, Tom Wistrcill. Quote
