You all got your wish. We'll find out if it's the right choice...

Um...

Didn't you also call for it?

No. I called for a QB to be named sooner rather than later, and for that I'm happy. But I wasn't pulling for one over the other. Nicely will see playing time this year and next, of that I have no doubt.

Wasn't there a thread about a Mount Union 7-on-7 where you criticized him up and down. Am I wrong here.

Oh, that is right, you're a contrarian and because this was an Ianello decision it was automatically wrong and you don't like it.

I forgot.

I have no care either way (on who the starter was, I just want wins). I was just posting the news and saw your comment and found it curious. Maybe you made no actual statement, but you certainly alluded to who you wanted under center.

This is a big deal for fans who want to see something different from the Zips this season. There's nothing quite like a rookie QB beating out a veteran before the first game of the season to rekindle fan interest in a losing team. Of course it's almost impossible for the rookie to live up to expectations in his first start.

Moore will be immediately thrown into the fire against a big, fast tOSU defense. Lacking Nicely's experience with the Zips' offense, it could really look ugly at times. But maybe we'll also see a few bursts of goodness that will give us hope for the rest of the season.

We all saw Nicely's strengths and weaknesses under game conditions. We don't yet know what Moore's are. But we think we know he's at least more mobile than Nicely. Not that you want your QB running all the time and constantly exposed to big hits. But it really does change the nature of the offense to have someone who's better able to scramble out of danger and perhaps create something out of a busted play.

Exciting times.

My first time to post on the board as a ZIP alum. I have been reading and see how everyone was so quick to bash NICELY. I feel for the kid. Cant imagine HOW you can play for a bumbling idiot like IANELLO. I hated those youtube camp practice interviews. Looks Like Coach I is trying to make PN his skapegoat. I was at several of the games last season. PN got so abused. NO protection,,he took some huge hits and always got up. Hes an athlete , and showed his leadership skills by his never giving up and always fighting. I NEVER saw him throw a helmet down or cuss on the sidelines like MANY college and pro qbs do when things go bad. Always kept his composure. Thank you PN7. Your a class act and great role model for my kids. I was at the Spring Game. CM didnt impress me much. AT 6'1 I think The Lone Ranger is going to need his HORSE to be able to see over that OSU Defense. Its not Mississippi Juco Football. I hope the best for my ZIPS this season but the QB was NOT the problem last season,,however its an easy person to blame. It starts at the TOP..and thats COACH I.

Wouldn't you know it. The bookies had it right:

The quarterback position is still wide open, but look for Clayton Moore to emerge as the starter by opening day.

Also, I seem to recall that one of the stories about Moore coming to Akron indicated he was heavily influenced by Ron Powlus being the QB coach. Moore was said to like the fact that Powlus coached Jimmy Clausen at Notre Dame. Ianello's decision to make Moore the starter was no doubt largely based on input from Powlus.

LOL Yes...you left yourself the option to complain whoever was named the starter. Nobody calls you stupid ;)

This is probably a good thing for the team, meaning that Moore showed enough to beat someone who started for 19 games (regardless of what some of you may think of him, he did beat out others for the job). Just don't want to see Nicely lose heart. We still need him.

I am more than OK with this. I went to the spring practice and the open practice last week just to watch the QB competition. I came early and stayed late just to watch the interaction of the 2 guys with their teammates and fans. The 2 things I came away with is neither were overly accurate but Moore was significantly better. In the stationary passing drills, Moore was head and shoulders better. And he just has a confidence about him that Nicely does not. I believe that leadership and command of the huddle are very important. Some can make their teammates better just by their presence, confidence and belief in themselves and the team.

Hopefully he won on the field and the team was behind this. I seldom agree with Zach's opinions but I do agree with him that we will need the back-up QB at some point during the year.

Yes...that is my only concern. I hope it was because of performance and not on some percieved "higher ceiling".

Winners find a way to win. Losers find a way to lose. My gut tells me Moore is a winner.

This isn't a time for gloating. My honest reaction was simply....What Choice Did We Have? This talented young guy didn't come here to sit the bench. But, we all know this team needs a lot of work. I'm just happy our coach had the guts to pull the plug on this two-year situation that clearly wasn't working, and has given us a chance to turn the corner with some new talent.

And.....May the Lone Ranger ride again, for the sake of our poor football program.

Just to be clear here, you're using the old "didn't come here to sit on the bench" line in the generic sense that Moore believed he could outperform Nicely to earn the starting job, and the coaches believed he had the tools to seriously challenge Nicely for the starting job, right?

You aren't saying that Moore was promised the starting job before he got here even if Nicely clearly outperformed him in practice and scrimmages, right?

If the former, then I think that's pretty much what everyone thought.

If the latter, then we need to discuss this further. ;)

Ahh-hah PN7 farts in your general direction!

Seriously, I think this was all about upside. I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other. Except, perhaps, that the Lone Ranger better remember his best play of 2011: take the snap, turn and handoff to #44!

Go Zips!!!

Thank you PN7. Your a class act and great role model for my kids.

He is one missed block, one twisted leg, etc. away from being the starting QB again. I don't want to see anyone hurt, but football is a game where anyone can get hurt at any time. He needs to be prepared to play if he is called upon.

He may fart in our direction all he wants, but we all know the fart won't be on target. :D

Technically Nicely still has time to transfer down to one of the many D2 programs in the state and start immediately. A good D2 coach in need of a QB could have him enrolled in classes and on the practice field tomorrow afternoon.

Sicne the season hasn't started he could transfer to any DI school also.

He hasn't redshirted so he will still have 2 years to play.

ABJ Article.

He said he had trouble adjusting to the Zips’ pro-style offense, in which the quarterback is usually under center, after playing the spread in high school and junior college, in which the quarterback usually is in the shotgun.

“It was rough here at first. In the spring, there were times, literally, after practice that I said I didn’t think I could run this offense because it is so different,” Moore said. “It has taken a lot of work to learn it.”

I think I'm having Déjà vu.

There's also plenty of other good info in the article.
