xu9697 Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Let's start talking about this week! I did a VERY quick look to find out what kind of offense Addazio runs with no luck. Ran the ball 45 times, threw the ball 20 times...so my guess is they are at least keeping some of Golden's more traditional offense. If that is the case, we are looking at two I-formation type offenses this week. And we will be seeing something similar to last week. Temple is good, no doubt, but hopefully the fact that the Zips will not be seeing quite the athlete that OSU puts out there will help. I said it in another thread...I will take a hard fought 24-10 loss where we get 275+ yards of offense and over 50% completion from our QB(s). Quote

Addazio runs what they ran at Florida with the addition of some formations that make the team comfortable. Generally it is spread (from what I saw while watching the game on ESPN3, the game video is there if you have time or access). The issue will be containing Pierce. Temple scored on plays over 20 yards several times so keeping the big play down like we did with OSU is important. Temple's D-line is still tough but not OSU. The little success Nova had was from quick strike passes, but I think we can run against Temple if we stick to power and sweeps. Holding them under 30 would be an accomplishment. And being competitive is more about our offense moving the ball, scoring, and staying on the field to rest the D. Quote

Without making TOO MANY excuses...the oppressive heat definitely favored OSU. The stronger, deeper team is almost always going to be at an advantage in that heat. Playing at 6-9 PM with temps in the 70's and rain (if forecast stays true) will also help. I am hoping for 1-2 designed runs for Moore and or Rossi to mix things up. A quick pass to WRs? Were we not asking for this for WEEKS until we started to FINALLY incorporate it some in the 2nd half of the season? Quote
Zipmeister Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 What a sad state of affairs we have when the discussion boils down to how badly we are going to be beaten. But I can play. Do you think the point spread on this loss will be bigger than or less than the point spread on our average loss this year? Quote

Do you think the point spread on this loss will be bigger than or less than the point spread on our average loss this year? Don't get me wrong, I believe we can win. When I say "competitive" I mean in competition to win. Not "make the scoreboard look respectable". I think we can get good pressure on Gerardi (we got some pressure against Bauserman, we just didn't clean it up). The things I pointed out are "keys to the game" for the Zips. The final point is that they are high octane, so if we want to win our offense has to do more than what it has in the past. I think Gardner Webb was the last time we scored more than 30 points. With a quick search, against FBS opponents it has been 3 years since we scored more than 30 points. Ohio 49-42 loss following the heartbreaking last game at the Rubber Bowl. (in a non OT game) Quote
Blue & Gold Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Just a little F.Y.I. According to RI's presser, we had 8 true freshmen play last week: FB Nick Rossi (boy, I hope we get him more involved this week!) LB Justin March SS Bre' Ford DE Isaiah Williams RB Karl Bostick DT Dajour Morris FS Devonte Morgan LB Gary Ransom (PT on special teams) That's a lot of true freshmen seeing the field. Additionally, 4 redshirt freshmen saw action: RB Jawon Chisholm S L.T. Smith LB Jamar Williams TE Anthony Ritossa Quote

I thought it was funny when Frenchy added Ransom to the list. He actually played some LB as well and made a really nice stop before the last TD. Not bad for a walk-on true FR from Zanesville. I was good friends with another a LB from Zanesville when I was an undergrad (Gerald "Bud" Alfman). Quote
Roo Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 We are a young team going up against an experienced Temple team that wiped the field with us last year. I think being able to keep this game competitive will show us where we really stand. I just don't see how we can contain Peirce, he is a great runner and he is going to get his touches. Can our DL and LBs cause enough disruption in their OL to make a difference? That is going to be the key to game, as well as not losing our focus on the big play as somebody else pointed out. Disappointed that I work and I won't make the game, because it would be great to see where we stack up against a more natural opponent. It was a long drive home from Columbus but I expected that. I honestly don't know what to expect out of this game as the MAC is so unpredictable but I am anxious. I am hoping we keep it close, and I don't think there is any shame in saying that. Temple is one of the fav to win the MAC this year. We probably have the youngest team on the field...those are just the facts. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 One potential advantage the Zips have this week is the possibility that the Owls will be looking ahead to hosting Penn St on Sept 17. The Philadelphia Inquirer has this story. Quote

Maybe if we actually get inside the 5 yard line we might see it. Quote

Do you think the point spread on this loss will be bigger than or less than the point spread on our average loss this year?If these spreads are real... you have to think that they're pretty weak... Temple -13... Temple -15http://www.capperspicks.com/blog/ncaa-foot...free-pick-6911/http://sportsdirect.usatoday.com/odds/ncaa...x?eventId=29779Not very realistic! Can you see us coming within 13 of Temple? Granted... that's not OSU's defense out there... but Temple can score... especially against an overworked defense.Last year it was only 6-0 at halftime... then Temple put it in overdrive for a 30-0 win. We had 154 yards in offense to Temple's 399... and we also had a 0.7 Yards per carry in the running game... against a MAC school !!http://espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=303030218Another bad sign... we played them late in the season... game 9... when we managed to put together the best games of the year... and Temple handed us the only shutout of the season.But... Wilkerson is a starter at DE for the Jets now... so we won't see him this year. Maybe we can double that yards per carry. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 The line has shifted some, with Temple now a 15 point favorite. "The Cos" must have plunked down a few bills on his Owls. I really hope they're looking ahead to Penn St.I'd really like see a Zip, any Zip (perhaps my newest favorite unsung Zip, true FR walk-on, #47 Gary Ransom) light someone up on the opening kickoff to send a message that the Zips have come to play. skip-zip Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 I don't care what the point spread is, or what Temple did to us last year. This is the MAC. Every MAC game should be winnable, and no MAC team ever looks like a powerhouse every single week. Unfortunately, we got blown right off the field a few times last year by several of the better MAC teams, and that leaves me completely confused about what to expect on Saturday. Lets hope the days of being "way down" were short lived, and we can at least return to some respectable play against some of the better teams in our own crappy league. Quote

No doubt, I would love to see Chisholm get 18+ carries a game.Rossi was highly recruited and I was VERY impressed with his running at the one practice I was at. jhg722 Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Thank you for mentioning several times that we're not Ohio $tate, a Big Ten school with Big Ten recruiting ability. I had no idea. I think our athletes and D are pretty damn solid nonetheless. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Ohio State ain't looking so impressive right now. This game is turning into a must-win. The rest of the MAC is progressing at an incredible rate and Ianello's 5-year "building process" will end up with us left in the dust. Compete now or else. Quote
