Doug Snyder
I often am amazed that there are not more fatal accidents involving sports teams. Only Marshall. Today...a Russian plane crashes with 45 on board and all but 2 are killed. It was one of Russia's best teams (or so the preliminary report says). My question goes out to the former athletes on the board who have traveled for games. Was most of the travel by bus??? Have you heard of any close calls and did you worry about flight/travel safety. It really is amazing that travel has been so incident free. Is that due to something the schools/teams do or is it just lack of reporting and there are many issues that we are unaware of??http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/09/07....html?hpt=hp_t1 I know this may be a hockey story...but all teams travel. Roo
This blows.Don't forget about Oklahoma St a few years back. There was a great story that not that back about that crash and the asst coach who switched with another coach and how a player was like his son and the regret he lives with now because of the death of that player. Great read...very very sad.As a former college basketball player, I was not a DI guy, so my school always traveled by bus or vans. I think there is more risk with that, the college baseball team from Ohio that crashed a couple years ago comes to mind. But if I recall, only the top tier programs fly smaller planes. Most travel commercial IIRC. But those rental fleets that most schools use, they typically use the smaller planes and I think that is where more risk comes into play. You rarely hear of the big boeing jets falling out of the sky. It is almost always smaller planes. I am not sure why that is? Anybody familiar with the industry? zip403
There was ALMOST a bad scene last fall involving 1AA McNeese States football team. It got little coverage, BUT they were on ALLEGIANT Charter out of Lake Charles. They were flying out to play MIssouri.. but the Plane was OVER WEIGHT,, BARELY got off the RUNWAY at Lake Charles, rear tires hit the runway lights causing one of them to blow. Burned off fuel and made an emergency landing in Mississippi.http://www.kplctv.com/story/13230061/feder...ttype=printable
InTheZone
I never felt unsafe. You're just as safe traveling as a team than any normal person who's traveling by bus or plane. Accidents are going to happen, but there's not much you can do about that.

Mount Union's wrestling team bus crashed on US30 (I believe) in January 2011 returning from Ohio Northern.
