Blue & Gold Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 Actually, I'm sure we're all glad this was written. Hopefully the ABJ can help put enough pressure on Dr. P that he won't be able to bury his head in the sand, concerning this football program, any longer. Marla Ridenour for the ABJ. I appreciate this quote, in particular: "Akron, meanwhile, is grasping at straws with little hope for optimism under coach Rob Ianello." Marla, thank you! Quote
RowdyZip Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 I just read this and came here to post it. The last sentence calls out the entire UA management. Well done, about time someone had the cojones. Quote
skip-zip Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 I think this gets me back to something I've mentioned before. Why does rebuilding a football program have to include several years of losing? And patience with repeated losing? Ken+ is winning games now, in their first season under a new coach, who has taken some great steps to make them better. We are almost through two years of "rebuilding", with nothing to show for it. Dave in Green Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 For a large institution like UA, internet forum critics may be considered nothing more than annoying little gnats buzzing around that aren't even worth the energy to swat at. But an article like this in the local newspaper is like stepping on a hornet's nest. This is actually a pretty big deal. Quote
bobbyake Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 your link doesn't work, with Can't links, it's best to use bit.ly http://bit.ly/vIi4eA Quote
Roo Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 I was willing to give him time, but his coaching is just flat out pathetic. This team isn't even competitive. They don't belong on the field in almost any game they play. I doubt that we will be renewing season tickets this year, especially since if you want to go to a game you can get them for free. As if nobody showing up to the games is bad enough, what will it take to get this guy fired? I really feel this is getting to the point to where it may be beyond repairable....that is a scary thought. Quote

I think you can somewhat fairly compare what has happened at Akron the past 2 years with what has happened at Can't in just less than 1 season. Hazell has 4 wins in his first year. That team is 3-3 in the MAC. It has played better as the season has progressed. Hazell also is playing with players he inherited from the previous coach. Ianello has had almost 2 seasons to install whatever program/system and players he wanted to install. Ianello has 1 MAC win,2 total wins, only one win is over a D-I opponent. There appears to have been little if any progress in the competitiveness of the team in the MAC. Not wins, just competitiveness. The players are buying what Ianello and his coaches are selling. We can piss and moan all we want on this site. But until lots of fans start rattling the cages of the Administrators, who we hope are embarrassed by this, nothing is going to happen. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 I wonder how far along Terry Pluto's "Ianello the Underdog" column is? 45% complete? 82%? Quote

This is a point I made some time ago. When you bring in a new coach for a bad program you cannot expect an immediate turnaround. But you should be able to see steady signs of progress, during the season and year-to-year. Instead, we are witnessing a total face plant almost two years into this. The only positive thing I can say about the situation is that it looks like the players are still giving a good effort. Quote

Can you explain how negative sarcasm targeted at somone who did not graduate from UofA, does not work for UofA, has no affilation with the UofA and does not work for the ABJ covering the UofA helps this, or any discussion?? skip-zip Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 And just to amplify the embarrassment from yesterday even more... Can anyone remember the last time that we were on the losing end of a blowout against Ken+? I don't know the scores, but I can't remember any during the 30 years I have followed this game, going back to my student days. As far as I can recall, during that period, we have always been on the winning end of the lopsided games. And it certainly didn't happen on our field, if there was a Ken+ blowout win during that time. Two straight losses to Ken+ including one blowout on our home field, alone, should be grounds to consider sacking an Akron coach. Quote

She mentions which coaches might be available after this season, but not the barrier to getting one: the cost of eating icCoach's remaining contract. Silly girl. Quote
