Who will be leaving the Zips

Recommended Posts

We are losing Luke Holmes, Michael Balogun, and Matt Dagilis by graduation. Also Darren Mattocks gone probably number 1 pick in thendraft if not, overseas. Now it gets interesting... I think Scotty is gone, he'll be a first rounder easy. Then i really dont see anyone else leaving. Chad Barson I think will stay. Meves wouldnt be very smart to leave, he's just not ready yet. Will Trapp is very good, hes just not Perry Kitchen one and done good.

So from what I see we will be losing 5 starters (Matt started last 7 games so ill count him as one). Obviously the hardest loss is Mattocks but I can see Porter bringing in a natural striker from out of the states again. And with our recruiting class coming in, and the six returning starters with some core bench players, i believe we will be making our third final four appearance in four years.

You can't leave early unless you are signed to a GenAd contract. I really don't think Caldwell will be offered one based on the other candidates and the total they give out each year, nor can I see the Revs signing him to HGP right after a new coach is introduced.

Did Caldwell play for an Academy program?

We definitely need a left back. The revolving door at that position this year hopefully will not be repeated. There were high hopes for Mayer at the start of the season but he disappeared off the radar screen and I would imagine he will transfer. Dillon Serna at left wing hopefully will add consistent scoring next year.

I think Barson has a good chance of getting a GA contract. Scotty is a little bit more of a long-shot and without a GA deal he will be here for his senior year. It will be interesting to see some of the players that didn't really play this year such as Andy Chui.

And David Mayer. This team will be just fine. I think Mattocks will leave, but he'll be the only non-senior leaving IMO.

I think we may see a fair number of this years' freshman who got zero playing time transfer out. I don't think Mayer will return.

i probably jumped the gun by posting this in another thread the other day..... but here are my thoughts.

Darren: will leave

Caldwell: had trained with the New England Revolution this past summer (his academy team) but the coaching staff was just switched up which may hurt his chances. I also feel that he did not have a very strong year overall.

Meves: good year (two good saves last game) but still really really needs to work on crosses and punching the ball out. I feel that he has to potential to be a pro but needs to be more confident in himself.

Barson: this is the one that scares me the most. always reliable, rarely makes mistakes, and porter has called him the "crutch" of the defense since day one his freshman year. i was told he was invited to train with San Jose and Colorado this past summer and he has always been with Columbus (offered a contract last year but turned it down). unless he wants to finish is degree, he does not have much else to prove. started every game of his career and played almost every minute, national runnerup and champion. i worry if he leaves our organization in the back will fall apart. but then again i am sure porter has someone else up his sleeve!

Trapp: great season especially as the year went on. needs to stick around another year or so. Not as explosive as Kitchen but has better ball control.

Yedlin/Gallego: not yet

so i may be wrong with GA and Home grown players contracts but this is what i think i know: only underclassman are offered GA contracts. are fresman were good this year but none will be offered this. between barson, calwell, and meves my thought would be barson if any were offered. barson is a "never makes a mistake defender", caldwell is a great player but in all fairness did not have a great year overall. meves will be a off the chart keeper once he is more confident and masters punching and crosses. so besides darren i feel barson is the only other player to be considered for a GA. now this is where it is tricky. barson is a home grown player with the crew (so does this negate hime from receiving a GA contract). also thoughts on leaving: lets say barson or caldwell are not offered a GA (which are 6 figures)contract but are offered a home grown player contract (which barson was offered last year and i am assuing are close to 100K). if he does not take it and stays his senior year the crew may not offer it again next year and as a senior would not qualify for GA, so he would just enter the draft and if signed would likely have a contract in the 50-60K range. i could be totally wrong on my thought process but if not offered a GA contract best bets for barson would be to take his home grown contract before the crew gets tired of offering it to him!

Souders will step in next to Barson at centerback, and being behind Trapp and Gallego and it front of Meves gives us a good core to start with. Need to find a goalscorer more then a left back IMO.

Agreed. We will need a tall striker.

Stevenson will still be there for LB. Is the exit of David Mayer a foregone conclusion?

Based on past history I could see the transfers. There's no point in staying behind someone who plays the full 90. I'm not really sure the mass exodus of freshman is what will happen though. Is a redshirt freshman more likely to transfer than a guy like Brenes? He doesn't really have a defined role yet will already be a junior. He's clearly a very good player but he's stuck behind two future MLS players in central midfield. I don't think Mayer goes though. Just look at his tweets from today.

Mayer staying would certainly be a good thing. I don't read tweets but my statements about him transferring were not based on anything i heard nor on anything factual. I presumed he would leave because of lack of any playing time, albeit one half or less, over the last half of the season. Since all guys want to play i presumed he would transfer but it would be great news if he was to stay.

The GA contract has nothing to do with HGP designation. The HGP designation does not come with any stipulated salary range and permits the team to sign the player without the player entering the draft. HGP also ,I believe, does not count against the teams' salary cap. Not sure about the GA in that regards. The contract amount for a HGP can be anywhere from the league minimum on up.

I was really impressed with Mayer at the start of the season. After the Cal Poly game (when he was one of our better players) he didn't seem to play at all. We have played 5 other left backs plus Mayer this season (Stevenson, Portillos, Balogun, Gallego and Brenes) which is strange. Does anybody know what happened to Mayer?

I believe he injured his foot/toe and was out for some amount of time because of that.

I heard (just heard, I am not certain) that he and Porter had a falling out. I hope not. I really had high hopes for him too, and thought we would have been able to pencil him in as our starting LB.

I heard the same. I wasn't all that impressed with him anyways. He never really had a good first touch, and I saw him misread the ball more than once and let it go over his head when it should have been an easy header. Those kind of mistakes can cost big in the back line. He did look pretty good going forward though, and put in some really nice crosses with his left. I do think he could be pretty good next year if he can iron out the kinks. He wasn't ready this year.
