Just mentioning previously mentioned names.

Campbell is interesting. Mount Union grad has 5 NC rings with them, and he is only 31.

I mean the other names out there would be something like

Terry Bowden, Ron Zook, Rick Neuheisel. Bowden maybe but the other two are kind of failures.

I like these guys now that Tressel is allegedly out:

Mark Stoops at FL St - but I doubt he would come since he was interviewed and passed over last time!

Ron Zook formerly of IL

Pat Narduzzi at MI St

Eric Wolford at YSU

Greg Studwara at LSU

Any chance of luring Larry Kehres himself from Mount?

Maybe Carl Pelini at Nebraska

What about Mike Belloti (former Oregon coach)?

I assume names like Kevin Sumlin (Houston) and Chris Petersen (Boise) are being considered for bigger jobs.

Dave Ragone at Tennessee Titans

Matt Campbell at Toledo

Mike Johnson at UCLA

Unfortunately for UofA, there are alot of openings this year. Illinois, Penn State, UCLA, etc...

Just heard of Campbell today. As a realistic target, I am intrigued:

Matt Campbell (32, Ohio): In his second season as the offensive coordinator under Tim Beckman at Toledo. Campbell has also coached the Rockets’ offensive line since Beckman took over the program in 2009. A 2002 graduate of Mount Union, Campbell was a member of five national championship teams as a coach and player for the Purple Raiders. He was a two-time first-team All-American and was voted as the Ohio Athletic Conference’s Best Defensive Lineman in 2001 and 2002.

Campbell joined Gregg Brandon’s staff as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green from 2003-04 when Beckman was still working as the defensive coordinator. He spent two years as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Mount Union before returning to coach the offensive line at Bowling Green in 2006. He is a native of Massillon Ohio.

“Matt Campbell is a coach’s son who has grown up around football all his life,” Beckman said when he hired Campbell as his offensive coordinator.

“In my opinion, he’s the best recruiter in the Mid-American Conference. But his knowledge of the offensive schemes we want to run here was the first reason I offered him the position.”

Chuck Martin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Martin_...rican_football)

Paul Winters http://wsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=328

Matt Campbell http://www.utrockets.com/ViewArticle.dbml?...TCLID=204987252

Hugh Freeze http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Freeze

Willie Fritz http://www.ucmo.edu/athletics/football/coa...illie_fritz.cfm

Paul Chryst http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Chryst

Martin is an enigma to me...why has not gotten an opportunity sooner??

Winters is my second choice to JT

Campbell is considered an excellent recrruiter...at the MAC level and should have a good list to work from immediately. But we probably would suffer while got up to speed as HC.

Freeze & Fritz are guys who have some success but are not Ohio or Midwest guys. Next...

Chryst is interesting. But do we want another "Wisconsin" model??

I would be happy with Martin or Winters and OK with Campbell...but he would be another project.

If JT doesn't come here, does everyone resume hating him and calling him a cheater/scum etc? I'm curious to see how this progresses.

I'm sure people will, the same people that hate their ex girlfriends or the ones that think every girl that won't go out with them must be a b-word.

I'm still not convinced on Winters, I have my reasons.

Whoever gets the job...I want them to be meeting Wistricill for the first time at the interview. We saw what friends of Tom got us last time. Lets hire someone who has no idea who he is this time.

Terry Bowden would be my first choice for the job. I wouldn't be against seeing Paul Winters get the job either.

As for the other random coordinators around the NCAA I don't think too many of them excite me at this point

Fortunately, we have no shot at Pelini.

May be time to target JoePa.

RESUME???

Anyone who was able to put aside that guy's character issues, if he were to become OUR problem, should cancel their membership in the Zips Nation!

Let's just be glad that we already have the best coach in the nation -- and he has the highest character in his business. Whoops, sorry -- this isn't the soccer thread is it?

This was my reply to TW's e-mail today asking for input. I figure if he asks I might as well reply.

Tom,

I appreciate your willingness to obtain input from the fans. I fully support your decision to take the football program in a different direction, although it's never easy to make these choices. I ran a few suggestions past you a few years ago, so I figure I'll take this opportunity to do the same once again. First, I'll give you some characteristics I'm hoping to see in the new head coach:

1) can salvage a decent recruiting class for 2012

2) has head coaching experience or at least has been a coordinator at an FBS program

3) runs a tight ship but uses more than just fear as a motivator

4) can adapt his schemes based on the talent he has to work with

5) isn't afraid to take calculated risks

6) engages the entire Akron/UA community

Now I'll list a few candidates that have come to mind recently:

1) Wayne St head coach Paul Winters

2) Towson St head coach Rob Ambrose

3) North Dakota St head coach Craig Bohl

4) Northern Iowa head coach Mark Farley

5) Toledo offensive coordinator Matt Campbell

6) UCLA offensive coordinator Mike Johnson

I know you have a difficult task ahead of you and I wish you the best in the days ahead.

Go Zips!!

No offense to anyone, but Matt Campbell? from freaking Toledo?

So we just got a rid of a no-name coach, who was supposed to be a great recruiter and was from NOTRE DAME. This guy won us 2 games.

You want to hire a no-name coach, who is supposed to be a great recruiter from TOLEDO. Not a BCS school, not even a head coach, but from a freaking MAC SCHOOL TOLEDO!!! A team that wasn't even good enough to win the MAC West.

Let me know how that works out!

I'm sure the crowds of people running to get season tickets would be unbelievable!

We're already a joke, so let's hire an assistant coach from another school that's a joke?

What's next? you want the waterboy from Morgan State? I heard he's a great recruiter too.

Read a little more about him and get back to me. I expect a full report on my desk by 8:00 am tomorrow, or YOU'RE fired!

Yeah sorry but Matt Campbell would be another project...he looks like a graduate assistant....not enough to get me back to the ticket window. At LEAST he is an offensive/defensive coordinator though. We really need to do our homework on this. What about Terry Bowden? Have we ruled him out yet? Wow zips football has been really disappointing. I thought with the upgrade of facilities and the commitment of our administration to build a program that this was one of the best jobs in the MAC.

The thing that would most concern me about Campbell is his age. 32 is awfully young to be a head coach at an FBS school. The upside with him is the ridiculous numbers Toledo's offense has put up since he's been in charge. Exciting offenses lure exciting players. The "great recruiter" comparison to iCoach isn't fair IMO. Matt has had success recruiting IN THE MAC. All in all, he's not my 1st choice by a long shot. I just think he's shown enough talent at a young age to justify a look.

Yeah, why on earth would we consider an offensive coordinator whose team averaged 48 points a game against MAC teams to finish 7-1 in the conference, beat Temple in Philly and come within one play of beating tOSU? ;)

It would be too rational.

This is what will happen if Tressel doesn't come. Campbell would be a great hire, imo...but he just won't be Tressel.

He could be better. Lots of guys could win at Akron.

I know this. I just mean until he wins games, in the eyes of the public he just isn't Tressel. Basically, and understandably, anyone that gets hired not named Jim Tressel is going to be a disappointment for most.

+1 Not my frst choice...but way ahead of old retreads like Ericson and Bowden. IMO I want someone who WANTS to be HERE. I think Campbell is close enough in that regard.
