College Cup Final Four and Championship Scores

Fantastic assist and great "winning" PK for Ben Speas. I don't recall Ben ever taking a PK for the Zips, but he sure looked confident taking that one. Not sure which team I'll be cheering for Sunday, but I want Ben in Columbus with the Crew next season.

I am absolutely cheering for Charlotte on Sunday. What's better, being eliminated by the champ or by an also-ran? Seeing the ACC claim another trophy or seeing it go to a mid-major?

If UNCC wins the title, then they will always point out that the 49ers defeated Akron, UConn, Creighton, UNC to win the title. We may have to hear numerous times how they defeated the previous champion. I just don't want to hear that repeated over and over. They already mentioned several times last night that UNCC defeated Akron. Hopefully, folks would concentrate more on the upsets of the #3, #2, and #1 (if it happens) seeds than they would on last season's champion. If UNC wins, they don't have that claim. Also, I know one of the Tarheels; I don't know any of the 49ers. Then, we have what you stated: UNCC is the mid-major, and do I really want another ACC team to claim the National Championship trophy? This is why I'm not sure for whom I'll cheer other than the player I know...the guy with the "winning" PK.

I agree with all your points, Zach.

That being said, UNC looks the best side of all the final four. Tarheels will beat 49ers.

Interesting Zips connection either way -- the team that knocked the defending champs out vs. the team led by the player who transferred from UA.

I have to go with Charlotte as it's easier to make the case that the Zips would have had a good shot at repeating their national championship if they had beaten Charlotte as opposed to thinking the Zips would have had a chance to beat NC if NC beats Charlotte.

Have to root for Charlotte on this one. The team that beats Akron in the NCAA tournament deserves to win the National title.

That's a good point. The team that defeats the previous champion deserves to be the new champion.

Yes. Akron will get mentioned several times either way. Good PR.

I am willing to bet that some analyst theorizes that Akron would be in the final had Speas not transferred to UNC. It is a natural journalistic angle. Just watch.

I am rooting for 49ers. I actually think there are some future pros on that squad.

We've been hoping for this matchup for weeks. We HATE UNC-CH in all facets, not just athletics. I'll be making the trip down tomorrow to hopefully see our boys take home the cup. It's going to be a tough one, that's for sure.

You guys probably feel about UNC the way we feel about Ohio State.

I'm pulling for you guys all the way!

I really want to pull for Charlotte in their look a like Celtic kits, but I'm undecided. The better team which is UNC, but I hope the match is a close one and not a blow out. If Charlotte wins, so be it, I just want to see a good soccer match. The meaning of Akron losing to the Champions in the 3rd round doesn't fill in any voids for myself. We either win or we lose. 2012 we will dominate and I'll be planning my trip to Hoover, AL.

Unfortunately, they may be right.

I would agree. It's not too hard to imagine that having a fifth guy with the experience of playing in the 2 previous College Cups could have been the difference for the Zips. Watching the way Ben played in the UNC-UCLA semi-final, it was obvious he'd been there before. When UNC was down 1-0 and again 2-1, he played with determination to get the job done; not with worry that his team was down. When it went to PKs, there was no "Oh no" on his face; just confidence in doing what needed to be done to move on to the Final. If you look back through the threads on this board, you'll see numerous fans who felt Ben's loss was likely going to hurt the Zips.

I'm not cheering for either team. I'm hoping for a great game. If UNC wins, I'm happy for the guy from Stow who was always great to me as a Zips fan, and whom from everything I've read (and from talking with his parents who showed up to at least one Zips' game this season at First Energy Stadium), appeared to leave the Zips with no or little animosity...just wanting to fulfill his dream of playing in the pros. If Charlotte wins, I'll be very happy for the UNSEEDED, underdog team who defeated our team, then the #3, #2, and #1 seeds, and whose fans deserve their first NCAA D1 Soccer title.
