It's Official -- Chuck Amato is new DC!

I'm excited about the hire, I just worry that he is 65 and hasn't coached for 2 years because of illness. Could that 2 years be enough to take some of the game away from him? I hope not, but at his age and being sick it really sticks in the back of my head!

FWIW, the people I've known who've battled cancer have a unique appreciation for life and the things that matter most. What's so easy for most of us to take for granted, they do not... ever. So if anything, having been sick will make Chuck Amato a better football coach.

I've heard rumors that one of the SEC schools holds a coaching clinic where they expose the attendees to a variety of life threatening maladies to sharpen their coaching skills.

Canton Repository article.

where did this canton repository come from? i dont recall them ever giving the zips any coverage up until 1) the tressel rumor went ballistic and 2) the bowden hire. All of a sudden they're following the zips like crazy.

side thought: still cant get the thought out of my head of wanting to call it the Canton Suppository lol

I know! I posted the link in the hope that most of us here would click the link & give them a hit on their website. If they know people are reading the articles, they'll keep them coming!

I actually think the jab fit pretty good with your assertion that cancer would make him a better coach.

Nice. Thanks for making the most cynical possible interpretation of my comment. My late dad was a fine surgeon and a terrific husband and father before he developed lymphoma many years back. While he wouldn't have wished that experience on anyone, he felt it gave some new perspectives on life that made him both a better doctor and a better person. Perhaps that's too difficult for some people to get. I don't know.

@Class of '82 I agree with you 100%.

I'll add to your comment too. I think it says something that a guy who battled cancer and could certainly retire with little care in the world (he has been working at stat universities after all for a long time making pretty hefty wages) that he not only wanted to come back, but he thought coming back to coach at Akron was the right decision for him.

The intensity we are going to see from Bowden and Amato on the sidelines next years is going to be nearly as entertaining as the game.

I thought of that too. That is one of the greatest things about being at the game, you are your own producer. You get to watch what you want, when you want. I'll have my eye on both coach Bowden and coach Amato more than once this year.

It also seemed like a summary of the GoZips.com article. But... I agree, if we can get more media outlets interested and involved, that can only be a good thing for us. Just need to get those big boys up north to take their respective heads out of OSU's butt and give us more coverage... but that will only come in time and winning, which hopefully will come sooner than I am willing to predict

Here is exactly what you wrote: "So if anything, having been sick will make Chuck Amato a better football coach."

There is little doubt spending some time in a hospital bed might change one's perspective on life and maybe help turn that individual into a better person, but will it make that individual a better (or worse, or no different) doctor, coach, accountant, or garbage collector? In Chuck's case we will be able to answer this only after we see how he does post illness. If it were the case that surviving such an illness did guarantee improved coaching, it would definitely be an SEC team that conducted the clinic.

Sure. I was responding to a poster who expressed concern about Amato's illness negatively affecting his coaching. If there is an affect (the "So if anything" part, right?), I'd guess it would be positive as opposed to negative. You implied my meaning to be something else entirely and made a tasteless joke to boot. I took offense. Still do, frankly.

Anyways... how 'bout that Buckley hire, eh? B)

Perhaps "dream team" is too much, but certainly an A-list coaching staff.

I know that we all wouldn't want to expect too much for the first year and have high hopes for the years to follow, but I think that next year will be the most interesting. To witness what a contrast there might be in coaching, and to see what can be done before the current staff have their recruiting and program development pan out in years later.

I guess what I am saying is, it will be intriguing to see what coaching by itself can do before a change in talent level on the field enters the equation. How many games will we win next year?

Well at least we can agree that writing "will make Chuck Amato a better football coach" is different than "I'd guess it would be positive rather than negative."

Yes, good hire. :thumb:
