johnnyzip84 Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Walk on DE Paul Skolmutch is awarded a scholarship by Coach Bowden for his SR year. He has yet to see the field in his career at UA, so this is an interesting move. Quote
Hilltopper Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Coach Bowden is such a breath of fresh air. If you remember the last coach tried to run off every player from the previous regime. Quote
GP1 Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 He has yet to see the field in his career at UA, so this is an interesting move. Interesting indeed. Maybe it is as simple as they think he can play. Or, and I'm not sure about how all of the NCAA rules come into play, maybe they need to put a kid on track to graduate on scholarship for a year to boost graduation rates for the NCAA. Maybe they are looking around at what they have and they think they need some depth and this kid provides it. Maybe it's these reasons and more. Here is the answer I'm leaning toward though. TB and his staff are coming in late recruiting wise. It makes sense to give a kid, who has a developed body now, on his way to graduation and decent natural size, a one year scholarship to provide some depth. No need to panic and give out a scholarship to a freshman in the hopes he can play next year and in the future because they got a late start. Again...another smart move by TB and his staff. Anything this kid contributes on the field in a postive way next year is a plus for the team. We live in an either/or world. I'm glad TB and his staff can see more than two ways to do something. Buckzip Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Many schools do this. If they have walkons that do contribute and bring something to the table and they have extra schollies that aren't used, they will reward the seniors with the scholly. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Any player who was so dedicated to the team that they paid their own way through the Ianello years deserves to be rewarded. And to have their head examined. Quote

I know they had the team's football banquet yesterday - which can't be easy with an entire new staff. I heard through the grapevine that Coach Bowden said to the crowd that he was dedicating this upcoming season to all of the seniors from this year, and hoped they would all come back and visit/be a part of it. I spoke to a few former Owens/Brookhart players who came back to visit the University 2 years ago. Ianello kicked them out of the office (actually the weight room). Quote

This is good news. I wish the University could find creative ways to get former playes of every sport involved in supporting the University through actions beyond just giving money. Giving money is easy. Giving time and effort is difficult. The most difficult things to do sometimes are those worth doing. A few years ago, we had a telemarketing campaign and former players took part in. Basically, it was former players of every sport calling others of their sport raising money. Most donors appreciated being contacted by a former player moreso than a random telemarketer. Of course, they gave up on it after one year. Always seemed like a good idea. The hardest donation to get from someone is the first. Quote

If this is indeed true...and I trust that it is...we should erase Ianello from Akron history just like they used to do in Egypt with their unpopular pharoahs. Scrape that last name right off the freaking stone wall. Quote

NewZipsFan Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Who? This is a quality young man, who said today that he is going to make everyone proud. Very grateful and humble. If we have 22 of these type players we will win.... Period. Quote
