WinZip
what makes you think they dont? I don't think most people feel welcomed. Comes off as very clique like. Most people I talk to would just assume not sit down there. It's a lot of fun being part of the action and energy on the floor but could leave many feeling rather lost and isolated... OZoner
My question is why are wristbands required? Open the section and let people in.
WinZip
My question is why are wristbands required? Open the section and let people in. A good point. I think the fear is that the section would become more of GA seating and less of a student section. Most of this would be solved if the section was bigger. So being in a section with students your age, in an atmosphere that invites friendships will lead people to feel lost and isolated. But sitting by yourself in GA won't? Edit: and to the clique part, I promise you it is very easy to make friends in the Rowdies. Promise. there are only like two jacka***** in the entire group. OZoner
Because they're student seats... You don't need wristbands to enforce student seats. Check IDs.

WinZip
So being in a section with student your age, in an atmosphere that invites friendships will lead people to feel lost and isolated. But sitting by yourself in GA won't? When 25 members of a group keep to themselves rather than encouraging others to get involved I would say it does. Keep in mind most people probably have no idea what's going on with half the chants. People figure better to sit on my hands in GA than feel stupid. Still could go with the "it's their problem" approach, but obviously swarms of students aren't flocking in.
WinZip
You don't need wristbands to enforce student seats. Check IDs. No No No...that would just make too much sense!!! Only counter to that is you'd have to guard a seat more intently

Still could go with the "it's their problem" approach, but obviously swarms of students aren't flocking in. There's two sides to the floor seating. If you think one side feels like a clique, switch to the other side. The reason they need to hand out wristbands instead of checking IDs is there is limited seating available down there. Having wristbands is an easy way to cap the attendance down there. I just don't get it. People complain that the ROWDIES don't let just anyone down there. Now that they do let any student down there, they complain that you have to have a wristband to get down there. What more do you want? Yeah, the student section design sucks, but that's not the ROWDIES fault!
Blue & Gold
+1 Plus a side note: As a current student I wouldn't want to go sit down with the rowdies. They are an awful representation of the intelligence of the student body. But your ZNO name is Zip-A-K-Rowdie. What gives?
Blue & Gold
Regarding attendance - If it is low this Saturday night vs. NIU, it's because The Zips Coaches Show promoted the game about 8 times...with a noon start time. Gheez....hope to see at least a couple of you around 7:30pm. Uh oh. IIRC, Inside Zips Basketball on STO also advertised the gametime as being noon. JeffQ78
But your ZNO name is Zip-A-K-Rowdie. What gives? I made it last year, when I was still delusional about the rowdies. (is there a way to change my ZNO name?)
plowerman78
to answer the question about wristbands, facilities wants us to do that for the lower seating bc it is "student seating."
Dr Z
Whatever they are doing, it needs to change! Student section should NEVER have empty seats. It's embarrassing and a disadvantage to our basketball team.
RowdyZip
I'm just looking for solutions to the problem here. As many people had said, the empty seats in the student sections look very bad. It is reasonable to expect students to ask about the lower seats, sure, but obviously it isn't working. How much effort is required of the bored undergrads working the student entrance that they couldn't add this little question? Are these officers of the AK Rowdies? Volunteer members? THEY are the ones who should be ENCOURAGING students to sit there, not just scanning IDs without a word. This seems to be a problem with the Rowdies' leadership. No offense to those here that post that are involved with the organization, but it really should be an easy fix. The last few games have obviously had enough students to fill those seats 2 or 3 times over.
Blue & Gold
Every Rowdie should be charged with inviting a new friend to a Zips game. Then every Rowdie should go out of their way to make the new faces feel a part of the family.

plowerman78
Rowdy Zip first off ur fine, im no longer president/on board (being in florida from JAN to AUG being the reason) and even if i was i wouldnt be offended. To answer ur question the people scanning the cards work for the ticket office, now people handing out the wristbands are from the ROWDIE board. If u want them more vocal then they will be more vocal on Saturday.
Captain Kangaroo
Over Christmas break I brought my Kiwanis hoops team to a Zips game. When placing my ticket order I asked, "Any chance we can sit in the north end student section?" The guy replied "No, those seats are reserved for students." My response was - "Have you ever seen the student section when the students are on break? It's e-m-p-t-y." The predictable response was - "We need to reserve all those seats for the students. Sorry." The end result was - At the game, I spoke to a sane person within the Athletic Department who allowed my 6 kids to fill some of the 80+ empty seats, and the kids had a great time. And I am grateful to this intentionally unnamed person. The moral of the story - With the exception of one person, UA would rather follow policy and have the lower seats empty than have anyone sit in them. The opposite policy - At the Zips/WVa basketball game, after the tip-off, the WVa game announcer stated "Everyone in the upper section - if you want to move down to a vacant lower seat, feel free to do so." And all the lower seats filled up. And no one was injured, died or was maimed. The fans were simply happy, and the game environment was improved. RowdieUntilIDie
Just my $0.02: It seems that a lot of posters seem to have ideas or criticisms for the AK-ROWDIES, but does anyone actually take the time to contact them as dedicated Zips fans? It just seems that many people have praise or a comment on how to run things, yet they just post here rather then saying it to whom it is meant for. WinZip
Considering I graduated last year this topic really isn't for me. For the most part I think people are playing devils advocate because we know something is really wrong. I served my time, sitting on the floor with the rowdies my final two years of school. It was a great time (some of my best UA memories) thanks to the friends who I brought down with me. Never really did I feel much initiative was taken to welcome newcomers. My point is this: I truly thought that with the continued success of the team, coupled with growing school tradition the basketball support would improve ten fold. I'm just curious what's holding this back...something doesn't add up. I considered many times becoming more involved with the group, but was never really approached so my interest faded.
