4 for 21 from three. I remember a lot of good looks.

This might just be one of those games where the ball didn't roll our way.

I think that you are right. We were good enough on defense for the most . Tons of wide open looks from CG, and Walsh that just didn't fall. #5 was awful as usual as well in his limited minutes.

The Zips shot 4 of 21 (19%) from 3 point distance, pretty much HALF their usual percentage (38%). Some of them were hurried (by the shooter), no doubt. But it wasn't like ORU's defense behind the arc was stellar. It was truly sickening when they went to a 2-3 thinking that UA can't make these shots (since normally this would be an erroneous strategy) only to see it pay off. This was a simple "GP1 game". The Zips couldn't put that blasted orange thing in the basket.

BTW, skip-zip you were dead right about Buffalo and K.E.N.T. being NOWHERE NEAR the level of a 3 or 4 NCAA tourney seed (as evidenced by the ORU and SDSU victories). I was completely wrong and I take it back.

Why is it that bracketbusters usually usually ends up feeling like ballbusters? :nutkick:

Zips are 40th in the country in 3-point shooting percentage.

ORU is 292nd in the country in 3-point shooting defense.

The Zips should have won this game on 3-point shooting. The Zips got the open looks that ORU's poor 3-point shooting defense record suggested they would. They all went cold when it counted. They couldn't make up for it with 2-point shooting, and they got outrebounded again -- badly this time. Now they know their second half magic is hocus pocus against a talented team with good execution.

Time for the Zips to admit that their athleticism alone is not going to get the job done. They need to work their butts off in practice on fundamentals. They can't rely on any one or two aspects of the game. They have to get better at everything.

If this wakes them up and gets them doing more of the right things for the rest of the season and into the post-season, then the loss was worth it.

ORU is a darn good team. They can shoot inside....they can shoot outside. They make good passes. They find open guys. They are well coached. They handle the ball well. They take care of the ball. They play good team defense. They rebound well. They did everything a team has to do to win a game against a good team like the Zips. Hats off to ORU.

Akron can play like they did today and win a lot of games in a crappy MAC. They have to play much better if they want to do more than one and done in the NCAA Tournament.

To me the telling stat from today was 4 rebounds for Treadwell and Zeke COMBINED! You're gonna have the 4 for 21 three point shooting nights once in a while but there is no reason why our 7-footer and best rebounder can't get more boards than that.

Shades of the VCU game...coulda, shoulda woulda. Team is not ready for the big time yet. OR was well prepared for the game. They did the hard work to win the game, congrats to them.

I agree with all of that, except I don't think the top of the MAC is that bad. The MAC West is currently to be sure, but not the conference as a whole. Kudos to ORU, they deserved to win and I'd love to see them get in the dance and win a game or two. Still you wonder how the game may have been different if we just got a few more rebounds or just hit a few more open threes since we went 4-for-21.

The Zips need to grow from this and play the best they've played all year from here on out.

This team settles for the quick 3 when we need to score from the paint. They did not set up Zeke from the paint for any easy baskets. When we had the opportunity to take the lead, Alex took a 3. He had a solid game and played 36 minutes. Amazingly, the Serb was our best 3 point shooter hitting his only attempt. I though he had a solid game and played like a veteran.

Remember, this was the first bracket buster for many of these guys and we were a little tight shooting the basket. We had several air ball 3s and Tree almost missed the hoop on a foul shot. Even when we were not shooting well, we stayed with a decent team.

Nitro had another tough game. He needs to drive to the basket or take short jumpers instead of relying only on the 3 ball.

Haven't read all 11 pages, so forgive me if this was mentioned, but did anyone else notice that almost every 3 point miss was short on the front rim? ORU's arena seemed to have a ton of room behind each basket...maybe depth perception problems? No excuse I know, but just something I noticed.

They didn't choke. They didn't live up to their potential.

Outside of Rico and Serb, everyone seemed a little intimidated and scared a bit. May be too much was at stakes, so I can see the nerves of the first year zips being a factor. However, Q, Zeke, and Nitro had no excuse.

And speaking of Nitro, he must be really ashamed of his performances as of late.

Yes, we talked about it. It was like almost everybody had tired legs, which you will see from time to time, but doubt if that was the case today.

Let's give credit where credit is due. The Zips trailed by 11 at halftime against a team that was undefeated at home going into their final home game of the season. They fought back in the second half as they have so many times this season, and with 11:53 left in the game, they pulled within 2 points -- a single basket. Doesn't matter how they did it, they just did it.

For the next 10 minutes the Zips kept it close and appeared poised to make one of their patented spurts to take over the game. They couldn't quite get over the hump, but were still within 4 points with 1:53 left. Then they missed their next 4 shots -- all 3-pointers -- in a row.

As poorly as they played at times, the Zips could have won this game by playing their best in the last 2 minutes. They didn't and ORU did. The Zips were outrebounded 6 to 1 over the last 4 minutes

Where's our Zips who won at Mississippi State?
Teams do one of three things through the season...get better, bet worse, or stay the same. Sometimes you can blame it on injuries, sometimes you can't. After watching the VCU game, and the Oral Roberts game, I'm cautiously lowering my expectations. We are not rising up for the out of conference big games. That doesn't bode well for my NCAA tourney hopes. I am still hoping for a Columbus State match up in round two though, I'm just not betting on it.
