Interesting note was that it is looking like the QB spot is going to come down to Moore and Dalton Williams. Nicely is probably going to be transferring out if he is fourth on the depth chart.

Moore and Williams separate themselves at QB

Bowden says he still doesn't have a clear No. 1 quarterback, but did say that Moore and senior Dalton Williams have separated themselves as the top-2 options.

Bowden spoke about Moore's progression as a leader.

"Clayton is coming along, he just needs to believe in what we're teaching hmi about being a leader all the time, showing poise all the time and never stepping off that pedastal," he said. "You always know the other 10 guys in the huddle are looking to you for leadership. He's getting better at that."

Bowden also says redshirt freshman Kyle Pohl is making a strong push past Patrick Nicely as the No. 3 option.

Let's make sure we are all clear. Nicely is third on the depth chart.

In any event, an interesting read. Not sure why this board has been so quiet about this topic.

you have GOT to be kidding me.. I LIVE in TEXAS and have seen SFA play ,,,where Dalton Williams came from,,That guy was a joke,,he COULDNT even start at his 1AA school,,and now because of a friend of his who knows Bowden, he gets an offer to a D1 and in 2 weeks almost has the #1 spot. Looks like Coach Bowden is playing some politics,,and if thats how he is then I sure dont respect that. I am starting to think we hired a NAME. Just because your dad is a good Coach doesnt make you one. Nicely going from a 2 year starter to possibly 4th string... Nicely needs to BAIL... The akron ship is still sinking.. cant believe Bowden blew a scholarship for a qb for 1 Year who came from a 1AA ..Never heard of that before. Most QBS transfer DOWN when they get beat out. This one transfers up? Dalton must have something on Bowden, or is enticing Coach with Cookies and Buffet Passes ;)

Obviously what you don't KNOW is that Dalton knows the EXACT offense that Coach Bowden is putting in. EXACTLY. That alone, put him ahead to begin with. Once the other QBs learn the system, their talent level will determine where they end up.

What you obviously DON'T remember either - is that these coaches had absolutely NO IDEA what kind of players they already had. Can you honestly say that watching film from the past two seasons is a FAIR or even ACCURATE barometer of the types of athletes/players we've already got on the team? You basically have to assume the worst, but hope for the best. And its becoming very apparent -- very quickly -- that we've got a lot of very talented and hard working players. The record and film that the new coaches had to study did not show that.

So -- bringing in a QB that you know - 100% - can run your offense - is a very SMART move. This offense does not require a QB with a HUGE gun of an arm. It requires good poise, decision making, and accuracy.

And don't bash players -- wherever they came from, or however long they've been here. They're all Zips - and they are all working their tails off to be the best they can be for the team.

Nominee for silliest statement of 2012.

So what time shall we be expecting you for breakfast this Saturday?

Although I disagree with zip403 regarding his assessment of the coaching staff I do find it quite interesting to see a non-starter from a lower level school show up and be in the mix for the starting job. We can say it is talent or system regarding the current QBs but consider Moore was recruited by other Big Div. 1 schools originally and landed here because he was kicked off his HS team during his senior year. Nicely on the other hand played in a similar system at Willoughby South zipped the ball all over the field.

I actually think the complete ineptitude of the previous coaching staff may have stunted their growth considerably. Nicely may be done career wise at Akron and I don't think that would be a bad things for all parties involved.

With all this said and done I would love to know what GT has seen at practice from the QBs and what he believes the different among the quaterbacks is. I'd actually love to get this input from the QB coach, but I don't think he will be willing to be nearly as specific as a member of the media watching practice. Does Moore look much more comfortable in a system he is more familiar with, does Dalton simply understand what the team is trying to do and does Nicely just look lost?

Your insight is appreciated GT.

I think you are right on the money here.

Every college player should take his biggest strides between his frosh and soph seasons. Typically, that takes place under the same coaching staff. When coaching staffs are changed, it does stunt that improvement. Throw in the everything we would like to forget about the past two seasons and a huge problem is created.

As for Nicely, I do agree he is done. With that said, I'd love for him to stay on the team and complete his studies at UofA. I can't ever remember a player being put through what this kid has been through and he keeps coming back fighting. I don't know him personally, but it seems as if he has a lot of character and is someone we want with a UofA degree on his wall. With character like his, he will be good at anything he decides to do. He is the kind of person everyone should want in Lot 9 in a couple of years.

I also think BigZip's take PN7 was petty spot-on.

If Nicely wanted to move on, I can't blame him. But if he wants to stay, LR8 and 1-AA have pretty spotty track records. I think there's a good chance the Zips Opening Day #3 or #4 2012 QB's will have an opportunity to see the field.

Maybe not opening day, but when the Zips are beating Morgan State by a lot, I don't have a problem with #3 or #4 getting on the field to mop up.

It appears to me as if Coach B is a pretty decisive guy. Nicely probably won't get enough reps with the first or second teams the remainder of the spring to be able to prove he should be in the mix for starting. The decision has been made and with that doesn't come an early season juggling of multiple QBs beyond two. There isn't enough time between now and Opening Day to erect a big top and conduct a QB circus (unless the Browns will allow the Zips to borrow theirs). That's the kind of nonsense Rasor and Pluto advocated and it never works.

When a coach is decisive, the players know what they are going to get and can prepare accordingly. Coach B is doing the right thing here. Make a decision and go with it. Encourage the two remaining to act like they belong and take control of the team. Coach the two remaining as best as possible between now and the start of next season and try to win some games. We have two difficult games at the beginning of the year and must be prepared for those games as best as possible and try to win. Spring is the time to experiment and the experiments seem to be over. Fall is for winning games. Let's try to win some games.

Lastly, I'd like to apologize to everyone for my uncharacteristic enthusiasm and positive nature since the hiring of Coach B. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and this time I'm certain it isn't another train coming towards us.

It's hard not to get excited about coach Bowden, when you see him doing all the little things right. I hope UA is going to do their very best to support what he needs to get the job done.

I just re-read this, and my response, after reading about Patrick's decision to leave Akron.

What I failed to mention the first time, was that the starting QB at SFA, whom Dalton played behind, Jeremy Moses, WON THE WALTER PAYTON AWARD IN 2010 (basically the FCS Heisman). And then there was a coaching change - and well, we all know how those coaching changes go.

And --- seriously, "must have something on Bowden or enticing with cookies... etc.." ? I obviously quit reading the post the first time before I got to that part. Now I REALLY know that this poster is just a kid -- so I will give him a bit of a break... Don't know if anyone else has noticed -- but from the videos I've been seeing from practice (and the Fear the Dadgum Tuba) it looks like Coach is losing some weight!

WOW. Terry Bowden Bio

Bowden’s biggest accomplishments came while manning the sidelines at Auburn University from 1993 until 1998. While at Auburn, Bowden led the Tigers to an astounding 47-16-1 mark, as well as racking up three post-season appearances (1995 Outback Bowl, 1996 Independence Bowl and the 1997 Peach Bowl).

In addition, Bowden became the first head coach in Division IA history to lead his squad to an undefeated season in his first year at the school (1993). Bowden’s perfect season garnered him numerous Coach of the Year awards, including the Walter Camp, Scripps Howard, Football News, Toyota and the Paul “Bear” Bryant award presented by the Football Writers Association.

Yeah. Definitely sounds like we hired him based on his NAME.
