Zips football: Picture Day

Recommended Posts

With Bowden’s presence on campus now, events like this (meet the fans) and the launching of a kid’s club for athletic teams are shrewd marketing moves to build the UA brand.

Shrewd? These are ideas from past administrations that were killed. "Re-hashed marketing moves" is more apropos.

The recent "Meet the Team" event was not publicized very well. Hence the bad turnout (even by Zips standards). The Zips Administration needs to work hard if this event is going to be successful.

The Kid's Club was a great idea, and very successful 10 years ago. Over the next several years it eroded, until it was finally killed. If UA actually pays attention to the program and sticks with it, it will be successful again.

The problem with most of the past marketing moves has been that a lack of commitment. Every time a successful move is made, it gets left to rot over the course of a few years, and is then scrapped when it becomes clear that actual effort is required to maintain it.

I do not agree with you often...but you are correct here.

The Athletic Director carousel we've witnessed over the past 12 years is also a prime contributor. Every new guy has his own people, his own plan....and everything starts from zero every 4-or-so years. Our only tradition is rebuilding.

If you're under the impression that they're going to be able to get by on the Bowden name alone, you're wrong. My guess? This was a trial thing to see if there was any interest. More than one person associated with the event was surprised by the level of interest.

The bottom line is this: an effort is being made. The turnout wasn't overwhelming, but you have to take baby steps before you can run. Until the Zips can show that they can win, they're not going to get the kind of turn out you want. Even after InfoCision opened with sell out game, the next week it was a half capacity.

Anything worth building takes time to do it right.

Thank you. I was surprised to read on GoZips.com that there was a meet the team event that had taken place. I've attended these in the past when they were "advertised", but I didn't see anything about this one until it was over. If there was a flyer that came with my season tickets (as one would have thought), I missed it.

I don't think Cap'n said they're going to be able to get by on the Bowden name alone, that wasn't his point at all. His problem was with you saying Meet the Team and the kids club were "shrewd" new marketing ideas. The fact of the matter is Meet the Team has been going on for a long time, starting out at the Rubber Bowl before we even had the indoor facility when I was playing. Looking at the pictures from yesterday, the attendance was far worse than its been most years, and that's a result of poor, poor marketing. No one even knew about it! If it had been marketed correctly, the attendance would've been up from previous years, because there is more buzz about Zips football in the community than there's been in a while. The Kids Club is also not new, it's a rehashed idea that was left to die years ago. Captain's point isn't that we don't need these programs, his point is that they must have effort put into them or they'll be as worthless as they've been in the past.

I was told it's the first time that it's been done at this time of the year. It's previously been done in the spring. Thus my contention that it was a trial thing. I'll go back to not engaging in these forums beyond what I've done before.

Where'd you get the Bowden reference? There was nothing about Bowden in my post. You're wrong.

My comment was - The event and the Kids Club are not shrewd. The are old ideas. They have been done at UA in the recent past.

If you think re-hashing Meet the Team, and Zippy Kids Club are "shrewd" marking moves, you probably thought Rob Ianello had a shrewd offensive mind too?

GT, I appreciate the unprecedented local print coverage of the Zips as much as anyone on this board. You have repeatedly responded to our input and are obviously putting forth an admirable degree of effort. And I realize you're at a bit of a disadvantage with longtime Zip fans regarding both recent and distant history. But I think anyone who posts here regularly needs to assume some level of criticism might come their way. The general point Cap'n made is legitimate to anyone who has followed the Zips for a while. I will grant you this, however: My memories of the team "meet-n-greets" prior to this one are all associated with the spring game. So in this respect, I can see last weekend's event being thought of as a new approach.

No, it's always been done duing camp, definitely not a trial anything, I'll try to find you some documentation of this.

And there comes the codescension, Captain and with that, I'm done.

You were a little condescending to Cap'n with the whole "If you're under the impression that they're going to be able to get by on the Bowden name alone, you're wrong." Gotta have thicker skin than that George, and you also have to understand that most of us have been involved in Zips athletics for a long time and will correct you from time to time. I think we're all in agreement that you're doing a great job covering the Zips, better than we've ever seen, and we appreciate that. It's a message board, so people get snarky and things get misintepreted sometimes. I hope you'll continue to post, I appreciate all you're doing.

My statement was meant to be one of reality. With that, I won't be replying to anyone any longer so there are no more misinterpretations.

Wow, grow a pair lately? You're more sensitive than my wife at her special time of the month.

Your statement was shown NOT to be one of reality, Captain and others simply corrected you, and now you're taking your ball and going home? Can't take a little criticism?? C'mon man, you're being a complete b----.

Really With this?

The bottom line is this: If I say the wrong thing in any public forum be it this board, Twitter, FB or anywhere it can cost me my job. This is why I don't read comments on my stories on ohio.com.

I don't want any confrontations or controversy and all of a sudden "I need to grow a pair" and not act like a "b---h"? Seriously?

I don't mind criticism and if you go check I corrected the blog post.

But beyond posting links from now on, I will not be interacting. Read or don't read. That is your choice.

Frankly, I am stunned George even posts here. Not really appropriate given that a journalist is supposed to be a step removed from fans to maintain his/her objectivity. And he clearly has thin skin.

I posted links to storiies and blog posts with approval. I'm supposed to remain a step removed from the players. As for thin skin, that's your call to make. Fact is very few of you have met me outside this forum.

And we appreciate that, trust me, but good grief, people are going to disagree with you and criticize things you say, it's a friggin sports message board, so either admit when you're wrong when that happens and correct it or argue that your right and make your case, but don't throw a hissy fit and leave, that reflects pretty poorly on your fortitude.

I didn't say I was leaving. I said I was no longer interacting. And up above I admitted I was wrong by correcting the blog post.

You admitted it after you said you were done posting here for no other reason than Captain corrected you and threw in a sarcastic joke about Ianello's offense. C'mon man!!! Nobody's saying you're not doing a good job but heck, have some thicker skin and keep interacting.
