Dr Z
We really did draw about the toughest schedule possible in the MAC this year.Give me the "toughest" schedule every year. To be the best, you have to beat the best. You don't get better beating up on Eastern Michigan and Buffalo. I thought our AD was "looking beyond the MAC" just a few years ago, if we can't beat the best in the MAC, we shouldn't be looking anywhere. No doubt, it just probably hurts the rebuilding process in regards to recruiting and fan support by not "looking" as good.
Dr Z
When we won the MAC, what great recruit signed with Akron because we won the MAC? Bowden will do just fine recruiting here despite our "record."

I think Bowden will do fine recruiting, but its very naive to think our record has no effect on recruiting.

They are still a glorified I-AA team. Start being competitive like the Toledo's,NIU's,OUs and the WMU's have been. TB has it moving in the right direction. Give him 2 more years. Dr Z
Im not talking about a single recruit, just talking about the level of recruiting in general.Okay, how did the overall level of recruiting differ after we won the MAC? I'll answer for you, I didn't. Terry is doing the right thing by focusing on proper geographical areas, making local connections with area high school coaches, etc. You need to see the forest through the trees right now. GP1
Good discussions on playing a tough schedule. Here is my opinion. We should play every team in the MAC East every year. That's why you have divisions...In order to find the best team in a single group of teams that will compete for a championship against a team from the same conference, but in another division. It streamlines the process. If the division is tough, so be it. If it isn't, so be it. I don't know why the MAC doesn't have every team in the division play each other every year. Doing so allows teams to develop programs designed to win their division and then take their chances in the MAC Championship. Really good NFL teams design their teams around winning their division first, maximizing out of division games, getting into the playoffs and then seeing where the chips fall at that point. The MAC should do the same.

The 2006 recruiting class was probably the worst class in the history of D-I, only a year removed from a MAC championship and with a 24-22 record the previous four years. Go back and look at who we signed. How many of them even contributed a little?
Dave in Green
@GP1, I really like your idea of playing every team in your division every year. Of course, it would help if the MAC could stick with an even number of teams -- 12 would be perfect. An even dozen MAC teams could each have five games every season against every other team in their division, two or three against teams from the other division, and four or five OOC games for a nicely rounded schedule. Good thinking.
K92
Lots of good points in this thread. As pissed off as I have been after some of the close losses this year, after I blow off some steam and vent, I know in my heart that Coach Bowden is well on his way to turning the Zips around. There has been some questioning of the second half play calling. Some accusations of being out-coached. Bottom line is that Terry took over the absolute worst team in division IA football and turned the offense into the best in the MAC in his first year. Unfortunately, that masterful job of coaching can get trumped by losing close games, resulting in being judged by a fanbase that is starving for success. Very unfair to Coach Bowden, but it goes with the territory. Still...I apologize, Coach Bowden. As much as I have difficulty being patient, I know I need to be. The wins are in the pipeline. Watching Terry's show in Mondays gets my mind right and I have to assume he works the same angle with the players. Saturday should be a good catharsis for everyone. Go Zips!
