So, if someone at the university brought this to the NCAA's recognition, were they doing the program a favor? Looks to me like the compliance office has egg, sunny-side-up on their faces.

Whoever screwed this up shouldn't have a job much longer. I think the biggest game of the PR tourney is OK State, because it gives us the opportunity to play NC State. We lose that one, it really hurts our at large chances.

This has to be, by far, one of the stupidest things I have ever read. Why are the kids being punished? Why is anyone being punished for what in essence amounts to nothing more than some inadvertent typographical error? The objective of such a punishment should be to assure that employees in university compliance departments make sure that they proof read their work and adequately understand all NCAA bylaws. Punishing student athletes does not and cannot achieve such a result. Perhaps the compliance department employee should be suspended for 15 days, that would at least present the remote possibility of serving as a deterrent for such an employee doing his or her job in such a careless manner.

Thanks for doing such a thorough job UA compliance department! :thumb:

The NCAA is concerned that student-athletes are well prepared to face life after college. I'm absolutely certain that's what's going on here. One of life's most important lessons is that life is not fair. Many times in life we are faced with situations where innocent people are punished despite doing nothing wrong while connivers game the system and escape with no punishment. Part of the maturation process is to learn to come out of such situations a stronger, wiser person. Tree and Nick should feel flattered and honored that they were selected by the NCAA to receive this advanced life lesson at such an early age.

Who wants to bet me that if this happened to players who donned Scarlet&Grey or Baby-Blue&White, these "clerical errors" would still be held against them after appeal?

So Egner should get some PT right?

I'm not familiar with all the NCAA rules -- who is? But I believe it's possible that if Egner plays in even a single game, his ability to transfer this season might be compromised, if that's the course of action he's considering.

This kind of suspension would NEVER happen to a big school.

Gonna come down to Kretzer and Forsythe then. I could even see us going Gilliam at the 4 in a smaller lineup.

This is an absolute joke. I don't blame the NCAA at all on this. The letter of the law says your paperwork has to be in line, our geniuses in the compliance office didn't get it in line. It sucks that Tree and Nick have to pay the price, but what other punishment can you realistically impose in this situation?

@Quickzips, if it was the UA compliance office that inadvertently violated the NCAA rule and not the players, do you not think that the NCAA could come up with a more appropriate punishment to fit the offense? For example, in the case where the student-athletes are actually in compliance but a clerical error screws up the formal paperwork, it seems to me that a reasonable punishment might be to fine the university for creating a minor paperwork headache for the NCAA. This is quite different from the students not actually being in compliance and the university trying to cover it up, which obviously merits a more serious punishment.

so this was the super secret reason that couldnt be talked about? LOL. It doesnt seem like anybody is "out to get the basketball program because they are having success". It seems like an innocent, yet stupid mistake.

I'm hearing now that this was not so much a problem with the UA compliance department as it was a petty sneak attack by the NCAA on an obscure technicality. Reportedly, UA was one of seven schools (Xavier was another) that got caught on a minor paperwork technicality that was easy to miss. A bunch of players from all seven schools will have to sit out the first three games of this season. Keep an eye on the various sports websites to see how this plays out when it becomes public knowledge.

Xavier won’t be playing with its most complete roster just yet. Redford’s return coincides with the start of Isaiah Philmore’s three-game suspension for a paperwork oversight at Towson.

Xavier officials discovered during the transfer process that Philmore didn’t complete a form validating his amateur status before his two seasons with the Tigers. XU self-reported the violation to the NCAA.

The resulting penalty prevents the 6-foot-8 forward from suiting up for a game until Nov. 22.

“It sets our team back because we’re down one player that we’re counting on this year,” coach Chris Mack said.

Yes, but it has been confirmed that the bad guys were riding silent helicopters.
