Akron @ Can't State

Everyone keeps saying the Detroit loss was a bad loss. I disagree, yes it would have been nice to have beaten them, but they are a top 100 team in the RPI. They are sitting at 12-7 and should easily get to 20 wins in the Horizon league. It's not like this is a team in the 200s of the RPI (like Coastal).

If we want serious consideration for an at-large bid, we can't lose games to teams in the 75-100 RPI range that are NIT or CBI bound without a conference championship. Relative to our MAC competition, the Detroit game was an opportunity for a decent win, and losing to a team in this range demonstrates that we are not worthy of competing in the Tournament unless we win the MACC.

The OK St. and Creighton losses were acceptable though we should have won the former. They are both excellent teams that are at-large worthy of making the Tournament.

My logic is, we aren't at-large Tournament worthy if we lose to other teams that aren't worthy and don't beat the ones that are. I'm sure the selection committee will see it this way as well, especially considering the bias towards more major conferences.

Hence, if our goal is to have a resume worthy of an at-large bid (and it should be), then the Detroit loss was a bad loss.

If we didn't lose such games every year to inferior programs in the OOC, I think Joe Akron would be much more likely to support the team during the MAC schedule and the following year's OOC. It's no coincidence that annually, the Zips get a lot of support during the three days in Cleveland.

We can schedule games against the likes of Coastal Carolina and Detroit and still have Joe Akron's interest. We have to consistently win those games though! The OOC is not the preseason!!!

My quick hitters from yesterday:

-One of the better coached games in recent Zips history. Keep it up! agreed

-Zeke comes up big against Ken+....again. I bet Ken+ fans will be glad to see him graduate. Zeke loves big games

-Ken+ lacks talent compared to recent teams they have had. their talent level is pretty good this year; no inside size

-Trap looked MUCH better then the Western game. Zips added two new pressure defenses for the Cant game

-Whatever percent of practice the Zips spend on defense vs offense, I would like to see 10 percent more added to OFFENSE. add more plays to an over loaded play book? WHY?

-I would like to see Deji pass the ball at least 50 percent of the time he touches the ball. so would the coaches

-Welcome back Chancey. I think this team needs his shooting to succeed late in the season. Chancey needs to be more of a senior

-As posted previously in this thread, great to hear Diggs was at the game. A good sign. and if he does not come back?

-Why on televised games in Portage County, can I hear screaming 13 year old girl(s) every time the Flushes score??? Annoying. that is the Cant State boys choir

-I hate reading complaints about the refs on ZN, Zips got some calls yesterday. Nothing that changed the outcome. bitching about refs is a time honored tradition that pre-dates the birth of any of us

-Seems like Ken+'s team has less "thugs" on the team. I actually saw some sportsmanship from them. you missed Hemorrhoid's foul on Zeke in the first half and the flagrant-one in the second?

-I'm hoping an emotional victory like this one will up the focus of the players and staff. it has already

-We need better plays to get Zeke the ball down low in our half court offense. they have the plays; they need to recognize that the BIG guy needs the ball in order to score

-Spotted some ZN members court side on the tube. lucky you; I sat next to at least two

Personally, I am not concerned about the "what ifs" of running the table. Our kids have enough pressure on them as it is.

Do the work; earn the ticket to the dance.

we did yesterday, which included the team looking up at us and getting all hyped. We dont do it at home when there is a group of people doing it 1. out of respect of the performers and 2. we had a complaint a few years back. Ha but when arent at the JAR its usually fair game

That accapello singer was the best one I have heard in years. A tip of the hat to him.

Hey headaviatorrowdie..I have a question. How come the AK Rowdies no longer say at the end of the National Anthem.."home of the Zips"...that was my favorite part!

#andI'mSTILLpatriotic#

It's disrespectful to sing over someone who's singing the national anthem, that's why many didn't Saturday. When it's being played with no lyrics, that's different.

To be honest, I find the whole thing a little odd. I don't find it that disrespectful, but rather in bad taste. It's our country's national anthem, something that represents the beliefs of thousands who died to protect what we stand for. I don't know if it's something we should take lightly by throwing our own little twist on it.

You guys are definitely on the right track not to make any noise over the playing of the national anthem, or do anything that could be considered disrespectful to the U.S. flag. While many are unaware of it, there are actual laws about conduct during the playing of the national anthem which are covered in United States Code Title 36. Some take this much more seriously than others, and acting in any manner that appears to show disrespect to the flag and the national anthem would definitely tarnish the Rowdies' image with some. In fact, the flag code states that non-military personnel should stand facing the flag with their hands over their hearts. I notice that a few teams who visit the JAR require all their players to stand at attention with their hands over their hearts. Many teams do not do this, including the Zips. I'm sure that those who do not mean no disrespect, and are simply unaware of the flag code.

I hate the recording of the National Anthem played at the JAR prior to Zips games. I can't believe we can't find someone to sing or play the National Anthem prior to every game. It seems to me it has to be lack of trying.

agreed. So generic. I went to a high school in a town with 500 people and we still found people to sing, and sing pretty darn well! #ThinkBigger

Seems as if it would be pretty simple to make a digital recording of the Zips band playing the national anthem and play that back when the band isn't there and they can't find someone to sing.

That's what they do right now, you aren't paying attention.

I think we need to bring back Greg Rockich.

The Akron hockey team has a singer every game...and they are a club sport. If they can do it, so can the basketball program.

Btw, they shame the basketball program pregame player announcements and rituals. It's actually pretty incredible how awesome their pregame is.

Watch Harney during the National Anthem at the next home game--doesn't even pay attention, adjusts his socks, jokes with whoever is next to him. Very disrespectful. Then turn your attention to Kretzer--at attention, focused on the flag and nothing else, complete respect.

I think that not stating at full attention during the anthem is a whole different animal (and somewhat common these days) compared singing or chanting over the anthem.

Being common doesnt make it right, either. Have never been a fan of the "home of the zips" at the end. Im glad they are doing away with it.
