Bold Prediction

One problem: Remember Saint Louis being 4 points ahead of the Zips in the Coaches Poll? Tonight they beat #15 Butler for the second time this season, and earlier this week they beat VCU. Saint Louis is the most likely team to move into the top 25, and I don't think VCU will fall down enough for the Zips to pass them. The Zips still need more wins and a couple of teams ahead of them to really fall apart. But the Zips should definitely pick up more votes this week after everyone had a chance to watch their performance against NDSU tonight. OU awaits in Athens.

@ZachTheZip, those teams were all so many points ahead of the Zips that I just don't think they will fall far enough for us to catch them. It will be close, though, and there's at least a small chance the Zips might slip in. If the Zips are still on their win streak at the end of next week, I think they would likely make the top 25 in the Coaches Poll.

Being realistic about this, there are a lot of points to be made up for the Zips to break into the top 25 in the Coaches Poll, which currently looks like this:

21. Colorado State 182

22. Pittsburgh 161

23. Oregon 92

24. Virginia Commonwealth 91

25. Notre Dame 50

26. Saint Louis 23

27. Akron 19

27. Saint Mary's 19

29. Cincinnati 16

29. Creighton 16

I think that Saint Louis moves into the top 25 after beating #15 Butler and #24 VCU this week. Creighton and St. Mary's play each other tomorrow, so one of them will get a quality win and almost certainly move ahead of the Zips. Playing only one game this week and beating NDSU at home is likely not quite enough for the Zips to move into the top 25. But they'll keep getting closer and closer as long as they keep winning.

Agreed about SLU, and SMC looks good tonight against Creighton. (Put Dellavedova in a Zips uniform, and you'd be looking at a top 25, if not top 20, team.)

Colo. St. lost at home, albeit to a Top 20 team.

Akron will stay about where they are, with the next two road games being the key to moving up.

#24 in the Coaches Poll!!!!!!!

Now ANOTHER bold prediction:

We win two this week and break into the AP Top 25

I was skeptical (even with the losses by a number of teams last week at the bottom of the list) that the Zips would get enough votes to break the AP coaches poll. I was wrong.

I am less skeptical about your above prediction though. If the Zips beat OU and Buffalo, I might be surprised if they don't rank in both polls.

I'm not even touching the prediction about getting an at-large.

jinx unjinx

And that's how we know you are a Zips fan - still depressed after achieving a national ranking for the first time ever.

Sorry, I was responding to the BOLD prediction- just saying if we need an at Large bid that the highest we can go in the polls would obviously be best.. TRUST ME I AM ELATED!!!

I wouldn't say there are many pessimists around here, mostly just me. It's just tough to think of a positive outcome since we haven't been able to beat OhioU away from Akron in quite some time.

These two games concern me as well. We always struggle at OU and UB. We will have to play well to win at OU, but UB we should be able to beat with just talent and depth.

Making the Top-25 is awesome though! If we finish with the streak intact and the MACC in hand, we deserve an 11 seed or better. Nonetheless, I hope the players stay focused on one win at a time!

Anyone who doesn't think the rest of the games aren't going to be getting tougher and tougher is just fooling themselves. Many times in history a team has finally pulled itself up to a top 25 ranking only to lose soon thereafter. What the Zips have already accomplished and what they're still in the process of accomplishing is darned difficult. There are 347 D-I teams fighting for 25 elite positions in the poll. At this level, it's no longer a game. It's cutthroat competition. It takes tremendous talent, toughness and tenacity to prevail. What's happened in the past is history. What may happen in the future is speculation. Past Zips teams have no bearing on what this team can accomplish. Either you believe that this team has more talent, toughness and tenacity than any previous Zips team or you don't. It's as simple as that.
