akronzips71
In general If the drugs cross state lines or are placed in the US Mail, then it becomes a matter under federal jurisdiction. It should be a federal offense because the U.S. postal service was used to ship an illegal substance. The postal service is a federal entity. Yes, a person can be charged with trafficking in illegal drugs and using the US Mail to further the criminal activity. There are multiple ways the charged could be filed though, depending upon the prosecutor. The crimes can be charged in either or both State and Federal courts. They did not say it was the mail They said it was at a terminal. Could be UPS or FedEx. From my experience, they tend to get more of that activity. bUAkronG
People are emotional. That's understandable. However, I keep imagining guest viewers from around the MAC, around the country, looking at this forum and thinking how ignorant or stupid people in Akron must be. It's embarrassing. Agreed. Not sure what the number is now, but at one point there were 139 people reading this thread, only about 30 of which were members. I don't think a few individuals' emotional reactions are going to sway people's perception of Akron, but what do I know?
Quickzips
I've about bitten my tongue off here. Some of the things I'm seeing posted here make me embarrassed to be a Zips fan. I've definitely lost respect for a few people on this forum tonight. Dave, I appreciate that you and others are trying to stay optimistic, and I apologize if I'm contributing to any tongue swelling you might be incurring, but I just can't find much of a silver lining or really anything to be optimistic about at all in this whole situation. This is bad news for Alex, it is bad news for Dambrot, it is bad news for the team, it is bad news for the athletics department, it is bad news for the University, it is bad news for the fan base. It is just a bad situation all around, and it is very difficult to make anything positive out of it. To those who think that somehow our reactions on this forum are going to tarnish our reputation as a fan base please stop. Someone pointed out that, at it's peak we had a little over 130 visitors on here. 130 people are not going to make or break our reputation. The news story is what happened with Alex, not how people on an internet message board react to it.
Dave in Green
@Quickzips, I see no useful purpose in Zips fans speculating about the worst possible scenarios far above and beyond what we already know about one person, which, by the way, is not entirely certain due to conflicting media reports and incomplete data. If we expect the Zips to pull together as a team and try to overcome this, the least we fans can do is give them our full support rather than imagining things being even worse than they are. So, yes, your first post did leave scars on my tongue.
originalrowdy
Police need enough evidence, called probable cause, to arrest someone. PC is defined as a 'fair probability' that a crime was committed and that the person arrested is the one that committed it. This is a low standard to achieve, so yes, by no means is this a conviction. A finding of guilty requires 'beyond a reasonable doubt'. Presume innocence. My problem is that, innocent or not, this is a major distraction for a team already dealing with high expectations and unprecedented media attention. The timing of all this just couldn't be worse. skip-zip
Wow. We finally just became the lead story on both Channel 3 and Channel 5. Too bad these jokers could never do this for all of the good things that happen at the U of A, and their athletic programs.

The timing of all this just couldn't be worse. Disagree. High expectations, yes. Unprecedented media attention? Maybe a week ago. Since the loss at Buffalo, Akron's just another mid-major having a decent season. They're not getting national attention anymore. This story isn't even on ESPN anywhere. Twitter may be "abuzz" right now but don't forget how much attention Anne Hathaway's nipples were getting two Sundays ago. Now they're just a footnote in Oscars history. My point is that tomorrow night's game will be treacherous but come the tournament, you'd better be damned sure KD will have this team in the mindset to win without Abreu. This team is more than just one player.
skip-zip
High expectations, yes. Unprecedented media attention? Maybe a week ago. I said this myself. Once the streak was over, our media attention was going to quickly return to the "same old same old". At least, as far as our success was concerned. mrelegazna
After this season I bet Coach D leaves. Any bets? Since no one responded to your offer directly, I will. Do you mean "He will parlay the multi-year success he's had at Akron into a more prestigious or higher-paying job?" Or do you mean, "The Akron brass will fire him, or compel him to resign in disgrace, because of one guy?" Or perhaps you are one of the ones who believe the entire team runs a drug ring on the downlow. If you mean the latter, I take that bet. Fifty bucks. If you mean the former, I do not take the bet, and I would have to ask you what the hell that has to do with this situation and thread, other than to draw attention to yourself. That business aside...I don't feel like we are doomed. This adversity will test the team like they have never been tested before (from a college basketball perspective anyway), and I think there's a non-zero chance we rise to the occasion. Whomever takes over at the point has a simple directive...get it across the court and don't make stupid passes. We still have the perimeter shooting and the dominant inside play to keep defenses honest. At times, especially the two seasons prior to this one, AA was an out-of-control turnover machine, trying to slash to the paint and make low-percentage circus shots. We were pretty damn good anyway. And without the cleared-eyed motivation I think (hope) this team will have now.

Big Zip
Did I hear that Alex signed for a package at a friend's house? Was the package addressed to him? Is it possible it wasn't his package and it was the 18 year old package?
Zipgrad01
Did I hear that Alex signed for a package at a friend's house? Was the package addressed to him? Is it possible it wasn't his package and it was the 18 year old package? Possible. That is the thread of hope that I am holding on to. We should find out more today after he appears in court. Does anyone know what time that is happening?
